If I'm going to ride with my wife (she only likes rail trails and dedicated bike paths) or include a bit of asphalt for say a large climb the 2x is nice, especially with that granny gear for bigger rides too. But more often than not I'm riding trails I ride with a hard tail MTB so I'd prefer my SRAM GX eagle drivetrain in those instances.

Has anyone from a road cycling background bought a gravel bike with a 1x group set and wish they had gone with a 2x instead?

I have a road bike with a tiagra groupset, and a hardtail MTB with a SRAM Eagle SX 1x11 drivetrain. I spent less than $2k for both combined (the road bike was an unbelievable clearance deal that would be hard to find these days, though). with proper maintenance, both perform as well as much more expensive bikes, and i am glad i have a "real" road bike and a "real" mountain bike instead of one bike that blends elements of the two.

Early 50s UK male, 8 marathons through my 40s, countless 1/2s, 10k and 5ks, a little out of shape but bored with running and looking for a new challenge. 

I have about £2k to spend and looking to dip my toe into cycling. Currently looking at gravel bikes due to versatility but also considering road bike for more serious miles and a cheap’ish Mountain bike for a bit of off road fun. 

Any thoughts or pitfalls you can suggest? I don’t want to spend too much and not get bitten by the bug, but also not spend too little and decide I need an upgrade quickly. 

I’m liking the look of Specialized Diverge E5 elite but you can’t get them for love nor money. I’ve had a Specialised bike 20yrs ago and enjoyed it, so favour the brand,  but have little knowledge or experience of other brands. 

Any help or pointers would be appreciated and I appreciate it might be a “how long is a piece of string” question but responses may get the grey matter working.
