 I've already connected the heart rate monitor belt that comes along with it. You're going to get a USB cable. On one end, obviously, is USB that you plug in your computer, and on the other end is the alligator clamp that you use to connect to the watch via these four metal contacts that connect to the four metal contacts on the back of the watch. That's used for uploading data, downloading data, and also charging the device

I kind of want a GPS watch like a Garmin Instinct Solar, but I’m not sure I can justify the price. For those of you who use one for backpacking trips and thru hikes, what do you like about it? Why should I get one?

For those of you who wear a fancy watch, what are the benefits?

As a device this is one of the best in the market. The problem start with Movescount, the web application where you can actually see your runs, plans your training and analyzes your performance. In the last years, these kinds of applications become a must for serious runners. Its enable to analyze the run, see the pace in different parts and enable to better plan future training

 Time is including pauses, pace is not related to the speed, and actually the data is wrong to the level that might direct you for wrong conclusions about your training plan. When I was referring these issues to Suunto support, the response was that these are minor bugs. Assuming this ability is minor is a common case in some companies that define the severity based on the bug and not the customer need It’s a shame that such a good device have so bad tracking software, where it’s obvious that today such reliable and good software is must for serious device users.

I got a forerunner 945 for the maps.

I like just going for walks without a plan and exploring, and the phone reception is pretty dodgy where I live so my phone battery runs down quickly. Sometimes I'd have to cut a walk short so I didn't lose GPS.

I started with a very cheap sportwatch with a cheststrap. It was rubish! Crashed and restarted 3 times during every (short in that time) run.

So I bought a decent sportwatch. A Suunto t3c. With a cheststrap (no optical heartrate sensor at that time). Also bought a footpod for speed and distance. Ran my first marathon with in.

But then came gps. A bought a Suunto Ambit 3. You could record your runs, distance was more accurate than the foodpot, but current pace less accurate. The number 1 killer function for me was navigation. It was simple breadcrumb type, but it works just fine. Discovered many new routes and helped on trails and on holidays. The watch could also display phone notifications. Big disadvantage was, it could not vibrate, only a (soft) ping. And I started to listen to music via my iPod, so that was inconvenient.

So I ran with a watch, a cheststrap and an iPod. Couldn’t I reduce that somewhat? At the moment there were not many options, and one was a Tomtom with music. It was rubbish. Optical heartrate sensor didn’t work for me. I listen to hardcore dj sets, which a quite big (80mb mp3 file). The watch couldn’t handle it very well. Bluetooth connection to my headphone was very weak. And the watch itself wasn’t very ergonomically.

Now, everybody tells you Garmin makes the best watches because they have the most features. I had to try one, or fear I missed out. Also, at that moment Suunto had the 9, which is way to big for me (plus was in the process of making a mess of their platform). Polar makes great sportwatches, but laks navigation. So I looked at Garmin. A forerunner 235 didn’t have navigation, a 735 was a bit of old model. A forerunner 935 was just new and did most of the things I need. I do like structures workouts, but mainly because due to Corona I cannot do my interval training on a track at mu club. Upgraded my iPod to a iPod nano 7 with bluetooth. However, the optical heartrate sensor on my 935 was just as bad as on the tomtom, so I guess it’s just me. So now I run with a watch, a cheststrap and an iPod.

Am I looking for an other upgrade? Not really. New watches have music, but what I read fro it, spotify playlists are easy to sync, other music is kind of a hassle. A 945 has maps. That could be convenient sometimes, but so far I always have completed my routes with breadcrumb navigation, so maps are no must have feature.

So, in the end, gps was a “wow, so much better”, phone notifications I like a lot, and a vibrating watch. Other than that? My watch is 4 years old. The battery is showing it’s age, but other than that? I don’t see any new must have features.

I had a Forerunner 630 and had a cardiac incident so I wanted something with HRM so I got a Fenix 5+. I appreciate the long battery life and the health features. I like the ability to do music and maps though I usually carry my phone with me on runs.

The Fenix 5+ has helped me monitor my health and make improvements in it.

The features that made me upgrade were: no touchscreen (I hate touchscreen), bigger screen, WAY bigger battery, and maps.

I was using a Vivoactive 3 for almost 3 years when it stopped reading HR for a period of time although it fixed itself and started working again. I purchased an Apple Watch series 3 last spring. I liked it at first but as time went on, I started disliking it. My main workout is swimming and the Apple was fine in open water which the VA3 doesn't even support but when our pool opened in July, I found the Apple very lacking for pool swimming and went back to my VA3. I was kicking around a Swim 2 but since I live in the mountains and hike a  lot, I thought having one of the Garmins with maps would be handy. I bought a Fenix 6 Pro around the holidays last winter. The Amazon seller I purchased it from was selling it highly discounted and it was cheaper than a Forerunner. No regrets. It does an awesome job tracking my swims and it really gave me great data during last winters ski season. I actually haven't hiked yet this spring due to catching up on repairs around the house but I will be soon and am looking forward to it.

I'm still using my 630, had it for 5 years, and Fenix 2 that I've had for 7.  They  still work great and will upgrade when they die. New features are enticing but my watches still work great. I only wear them when running, swimming or hiking. I don't wear one for my weight training workouts, to count steps (don't care) or to track my sleep (don't need a watch to tell me I don't get enough sleep, I already know).

But I wouldn't mind some additional features like music, maps, and custom workouts. We are also hikers, canoeists, and do some other hobby activities.

After finding my coin stash with significant dollars in it and after spending a few hours looking at features I went with the Fenix 6s Pro.  A couple of surprising features that I didn&#39;t know I needed or that made me smile included the heat acclimation and the metronome (which is something that I really enjoy running to and was a pleasant bonus).  The maps were also a selling feature.  I also realized that I tend to buy quality and then keep things for a while.  The watch should not be any different. I&#39;m looking forward to testing it out during the summer.</p>

What made you upgrade your Garmin watch?

 I have used it as my regular watch for close to two month. I run 3 times per week and I have to charge the watch 1-2 per week. The display is easy to read and the functionality is intuitive. The information provided by the watch is really nice and very helpful to track your progress, your routes, 

.. I would love the watch even more if they had the functionality to upload running data to sites such as RunKeeper or Endomondo. RIght now you can upload but only to the Suunto site which is covered by a much smaller community

The time to first fix (when it acquires GPS localization) is typically 1-2 minutes and it is quite slow if you run in a metropolitan area due to limited views of the sky. Other than this a fantastic watch

I have tried my share of watches with heart rate monitors. I acquired the Suunto AMBIT to get GPS coverage and also heart rate information. In the past I have resorted to use of a cell phone with an ANT+ adapter to get map information combined with heart rate data. The Suunto is a fairly thick watch, but also highly rugged

I'm currently looking at the Forerunner 245 music ($289AU), Venu SQ ($229AU) and Forerunner 935 ($208AU) as these are all currently within my budget due to sales.  

The Venu seems like it fits my everyday need a bit better, but the 245 and 935 seem like they'd be better for when I go riding. They all seem so similar so I'm honestly a but lost on which one I should be choosing.

I just looked at a runner that used to local to me on strava and saw he is still using the garmin 205 to log runs.  I think that was released around 2005.  I actually recently sold my (brick like) 305 which still worked and synced with Garmin Connect (website/app).

I wasn't using the 305.  I had a 235 which I was very happy with and only upgraded to a 245 because the 235 was stolen /lost (Ieft it somewhere, went back 30 minutes later, gone) 

New features are great but I think most of us only really need time, distance and maybe heartbeat and maybe a ni e GPS trail so we can see, that we got tired by a landmark etc.


So what do you use?  How long have you had it?  Do you plan to upgrade? When?

lifecycle: How Long do you keep your Garmin/ Polar/ Sunto etc

 If I stop the exercise and restart then it works again but never for more than a few minutes. I have searched the web and have not found anyone else with this specific problem, but I have reloaded the app and done a number of things to try to correct this.  Today while hiking the watch suddenly went from showing about 6 miles hiked to 146 miles and the average speed suddenly jumped from about 3 mph to over 60 mph. Obviously the watch got a bad fix and the software did nothing to throw it out

 If you wear it inside any sort of a jacket it will likely pause while in exercise mode. I had read this before I bought it but figured it couldnt be as bad as some people had suggested. It is. This by itself can be solved by wearing it outside of all clothing which is annoying but solvable even though this shouldnt be an issue in the first place

Too Many Problems

Suunto Ambit 3, built like a tank and battery lasts forever. Only buttons, no touchscreen and no nonsense.

When I run I get sweaty, or sometimes it rains and watch touchscreens become useless. Even in perfect conditions they're hard to use while running!

It is getting hard to find a watch that you can just use as a GPS watch with a few other sports related features. I used to be a Garmin die-hard but I just looked at their website and it seems they've have gone off the deep end with touchscreens and useless social media features that actively degrade the utility of their watches for going for a run.

Are there any sports watch models out there that:

- use buttons only (no touchscreen)
- have longish battery life (survive a 15hr ultramarathon on a full charge)
- fairly simple UI (not a luddite but I don't need to get text messages and 300 other pointless services on my watch. I'll check my phone later thanks)
- look fairly nice (I managed to get a Garim Fenix 3 which is from just before watches jumped the shark, but its battery is now ageing and it would be nice to have something a little sleeker in appearance. The ol' Fenix 3 is a clunker, much as I love it).
