The sound was really immersive. Very clear and bass was certainly there when music allowed for it.

Auditioned Clearaudio Concept, KEF R11 today

 I then decided to try the Monoprice 12” 400W RMS and was blown away on how loud and nice the Monoprice sub sounds, and it cost a third of the SVS SB-1000 sub. The SVS SB-1000 does look nicer and smaller, but it didn’t give me that thump in the chest like the Monoprice.

Based on the reviews I thought this would be a good add-on lows to my Bose S1 Pro without needing additional equipment to push more gain. The SVS SB-1000 I received was either defective or the volume was way too low even at max volume. I then decided to try the Monoprice 12” 400W RMS and was blown away on how loud and nice the Monoprice sub sounds, and it cost a third of the SVS SB-1000 sub. The SVS SB-1000 does look nicer and smaller, but it didn’t give me that thump in the chest like the Monoprice

Logitech speakers, cheapest avr from 1998 on Craigslist and then I’d buy the Vizio soundbar combo just for the sub and throw away the soundbar. I’d spend the rest of the money on as many months of tidal it can get.

So first, you need a source, a source which will give you access to the most music possible. That would be a Sonos Amp at $650. Now you have all the music in the world at your fingertips and an amp, so all you need are speakers. An excellent choice would be the Pro-ject Speaker Box 5 at $300. That leaves you with $50 for cables. For for $1000 you have a nice little starter system that will allow you to build and upgrade from there. Btw, I used to own a high-end audio shop and currently own 4 systems, the most expensive of which is worth over $30k. I'd listen to me. And I still use Sonos on all my systems; you'd be shocked what can be with 0's and 1's......

My first (budget) audiophile setup. Couldn't be happier! Description in comments.

 However, I do watch the occasional movie in my office and it’s quite adequate in this 2.1 setup. Love the SVS control app, it’s class leading. This sealed design is small, fits my room, and adds just the right amount of tasteful low-end needed to compliment my bookshelf speakers (especially for TV/Movie watching)

- Nuprime DAC 10
- VTV Purifi 1ET400 stereo amp
- Pro-Ject Phono Box RS w/ DIY linear power supply based on the Sigma 22 design
- Thorens TD145 restored w/ custom plinth
- Ortofon 2m bronze
- Solid Steel stands
- Thicc diy power cables because why  the heck not

I’ve been working on this for the last several years, and, with the recent acquisition of a VTV Purifi amp, I have arrived at a setup that I can live with for quite a while. I am currently living in a friend’s vacation home for Covid thus the ad hoc staging of the components. 

I’d like to tell you about the sound quality, but I don’t have a lot to compare this system to except previous iterations of my set up. What I can say is it sounds great. I hear things I never heard before. The clarity of the high notes is exciting. The way sounds are initiated is delightfully crisp. The decay of sounds like cymbals comes through more than my previous set ups and feels luxurious.

While building this I tried to focus on components that offered exceptionally high performance for the price and take it up to that line of diminishing returns. 

For those interested in my upgrade path:
- Vienna Acoustics Haydens
- ICEpower 125asx2 DIY amp
- NAD 3020d V1
- Pro-Ject Tube Box DS

I would love to hear people’s thoughts. Where can the biggest gains come from now?

Calling it Good for a While...

Tight, controlled response.  Even at lower volumes, you can feel the thump of explosions!

Hello! I'm looking for a "compact" 5.1 surround sound system. I current have a 77" LG OLED and a Vizio 5.1 soundbar. While I like my Vizio 5.1 soundbar, I'm just sick of how buggy it is. I want speaker wires (opposed to wireless) and a dedicated AV receiver. I don't want big floorstanding speakers as I live in a townhome: I can't turn the speakers (specifically subwoofer) up so I feel it's a waste of space and money.

From a form factor point of view, the Klipsch 5.1 Reference Theater Pack looks attractive. I'm open to small bookshelf speakers that will be wall mounted. Cost isn't an issue, as long as it's not like $5,000+. I don't mind paying for quality and design.
