Flying Spirit next month. Packing for a 3 day trip. Need advice for an inexpensive bag that meets their "personal item" size requirements: 18x14x8in (45x35x20cm). I infer that any 28L bag would do?

 More problematic was an interior seam on a section divider that blew out along its zipper. Noticed it at the end of my trip. Something I did by pulling too hard on the zipper, probably not. It appeared that the stitch line was less than 1/4 inch from edge of the thin nylon fabric used for the dividers

 I like bags that have sort of a dedicated big enough pocket for liquids but this is good enough. I got my travel backpack, my shoes, the dry goods and this has an elastic here which is kind of nice. It also has a little slash pocket where I have just a notebook and my pen. Probably could have put my e-reader in there too but it would have been harder to get to on the flight and I want that easily accessible

 As you can tell I didn't really like tie it down too much but you could kind of pull it down. That's a water bottle pocket. It's the only bag that I have that I'm testing that has one which I do like. Let's start here

Hi! I'm an experienced one-bag traveler but I'm not a trekker or adventurer. I've always traveled with one roller suitcase but recently decided I hate it and would like to use a backpack instead.   
I've spent the last 3 days obsessing about finding a bag that ticks \*most\* of my requirement boxes and I still haven't found one, haha. But I thought I'd share my list in case it helps others. Feel free to correct any of my info / suggest something I missed. Still looking for the unicorn. ha!  


Backpack Research For One-Bag Travel

Criteria:

\- clamshell/suitcase style opening

\- prefer structured back so it doesn’t go all floofy when packed

\- easy access front panel with volume or extra pocket for 3-1-1 in security

\- NOT BLACK

\- water bottle pocket

\- estimate size needed is 28L, but would like to try sizes on in store. I estimate my blue wheeled suitcase is 35L and I consistently pack one or two outfits too many, regardless of the length of the trip.

\- prefer no laptop sleeve because of excess padding/loss of space but this seems impossible

Dakine Split Adventure LT 28L $160 - love this one but it only comes in orange and black. Tidy strap design, designated shoe area, good pockets on front for 311 bag but I probably wouldn't utilize all the 'organization' there.

Burton 28L Multipath $170 - this one looks amazing, checks all my boxes but only black and grey!

Bellroy 28L Transit $289 - Soft fabric, simple design. Clamshell, nice green colour option. Only a stuff pocket in front, but potentially easy access top pocket inside main compartment for 311 baggie. Zippered water bottle pocket (reports of this not working well, as well as straps slipping while being worn). 2.4 pounds.

AbleCarry 30L Max $260 - Love the looks of this one, but would prefer it to be smaller. Nice green and blue colour options. Great pocket options, not too much padding for laptop etc. Zippered water bottle pocket. 3.7 pounds

Knack Series 2 Expandable Pack Med 24-35L $245 - Nice green and blue colours but the expanded size is too big and the zipped up size is too small. Also have compressible packing cubes. Zipper water bottle pocket. Looks a little more padded/bulky, and front pocket is maybe too tech-focused for my needs. 3 pounds. Sticks out a lot in expanded mode.

MacPac UTSIFU 25L (currently unavailable, from NZ)

Cotopaxi Allpa 28L Del Dia $165 - love the bright combinations. 2 pounds 10 ounces. Wondering about if the top pocket accessibility would allow for the 311 bag. No water bottle pocket.

TopoDesigns 30L $244 - Love the square design, fun colours, and seemingly useful pockets. Company also has perfectly sized packing cubes for the bag. No water bottle pocket. Don’t like the waist straps but I can fiddle to keep them clipped away. 2.6 pounds

CabinMax Manhattan 30L 45 Euros - fantastic design, too big though. good water bottle pocket. But only black/grey :(

CabinMax Metz 30L - great design, good colour options, still too big. No water bottle pocket.

Cabin Zero 28L Classic $60 - very basic. Plain shoulder straps, side and top handles. No pocket for liquids baggie. Nice colour options, 1.5 pounds. Simple, no super padded laptop thingy, but is “short” and sticks out a lot. No water bottle pocket but could shove it in one of the compression straps on the side. \*\* note: some folks are skeptical of sizing claims but reviewers say it packs efficiently and similarly to comparable litre measurements.

MEI Mini Voyager Under the seat bag - 25L $85 - not enough pictures to tell what it’s like.

Hynes Eagle 28L Flight Approved Carry On $50 - looks great but suspicious of price tag. Only comes in black, grey, blue. Pockets on front look very usable for in flight usage. No water bottle pocket. Currently sold out.

Tom Bihn Synapse 25L $220 - don't really like the design, but nice colour options. maybe a tiny bit small and not sure about the usability of the smaller outside pockets, but seems very well designed and a popular bag with one-bag travellers.

Tohm Bihn Western Flyer 26L $250 - great design-wise but very business-y looking and only black. Strange water bottle pocket and more of a briefcase-y look.

Hedgren Zenith/Equator 16L $170 - really love this one - simple design, but it only comes in 16L

eBags Pro Slim Weekender $120 - no capacity rating on this one but has similar measurements to the Bellroy Transit so estimate around 25-28L. Is very padded, very laptop/tablet focused so capacity is probably less, and it is 5 pounds empty. Only comes in black, grey and blue. Good pockets but some poor reviews regarding durability and zipper stickiness.

Fjallraven Kanken 20L 17” Laptop Backpack $140. Tons of colour choices, great clamshell opening, simple pocket on front. No water bottle pocket

Fjallraven Raven 28L $130 - Top loader :( . Potentially poor usage of middle pocket section - too narrow for clothes but too big for just using for liquids baggie.

Gregory - 30L option and Border Travel 25L $150 - Good packing style on the 30L but just too big., excellent water bottle pocket. Top access pocket for liquids baggie. Nice green colour option. 25L is not clamshell.

0inch laptop so why would you make the compartment to hold this? Other than that great backpack.

 My big issue with this back is it lists that it can hold a 15inch laptop. The standard laptop size is 15.6inches and I assumed that this is what Swissgear meant when I purchased the bag because no one makes 15.0inch laptops

 However when you try to fit a standard 15.6inch laptop into the bag it take a lot of cramming and feels like the bag may rip. Huge design flaw. No one makes a 15
