Tarptent Aeon Li

This does not fit inside of my pack, it's too wide, so that's still something I'm trying to figure out and even though you can take those carbon rods ...

That's at least that's what i think, based on my purchase experience, so a great company, great tent look.

You also need to be careful about touching the sides with your gear. This is exactly why the protrail has never struck me as a good design for a dcf tent, as it’s almost impossible not to touch something as you crawl in and out. The Aeon Li always seemed a better option to me on that front.

It's been great. Nearly as flexible as a flat or cat cut tarp in terms of being able to customize it to the conditions, full storm protection, a quarter the packed size of the Aeon Li, and almost half the weight in fly-only mode. It's really interesting because the actual volume, footprint, total weight, and general geometry of the Aeon Li and the Khufu are really, really close (when you include the inner), but both tents represent a radically different approach to getting there.

I am planning on doing a long distance thru hike in NZ this year. I currently use the Aeon Li, but find it a bit cramped and annoyed that it doesn't sit in my pack very well. I am thinking about switching to a 2p tent.

Tarptent Aeon Li for my gear. Definitely have to leave the doors open at night (unless rain). If weather is looking good for the night, I definitely pitch as high as possible (Aeon Li has a range, trekking pole for the support) to get airflow.

Your pack liner is a bit on the chonky side. A nylofume bag will save you an ounce. Are you sure about the weight of that Aeon Li? My old Li with the stuffsack was 16.4 oz.

As a weekend warrior with an Aeon Li, I have used it in the full range of mid-south US weather, so 10cm of snow, 43*C heat, and wild thunderstorms with sideways rain and hail, and it’s been bombproof. It’s been great for condensation, though some who have borrowed it have described it as too breezy for cold weather. It’s roomy for a 1p tent and my regular wide xlite fits without issue. I’ve had to sit out a weekend in it due to worse than expected weather and it’s OK, but it wouldn’t be fun to keep all of my gear inside with me the entire weekend.

Pitch any other side to the wind, leave the vents closed, and there’s no issue. The fact that two of the stake points have zero adjustment can be an issue in rocky ground, but I added loops to accommodate snow stakes long ago and now have an extra option for staking those which gets me through the hardest pitches. The Aeon Li is anything but flappy.
