If you want something even cheaper, look into the TCL 43S455. It isn't that much different from the Amazon Fire TV Omni Series and performs better in a few areas, like its upscaling and color accuracy, but as it's a cheaper TV, there are a few drawbacks. It doesn't get as bright, so it's better to use this TV in a dim room, and its remote doesn't have a built-in mic, so the only way you can access the voice assistant feature is with the Roku app on your phone. The Roku smart platform is user-friendly and easy to learn, which is great if you don't want to spend extra on a streaming device.

In terms of its picture quality, it's much like the other 43-inch TVs in this recommendation, as it has high contrast for deep blacks in dark rooms. If you like to watch movies, it's decent TV for that use, and it removes judder from 24p sources, which helps with the appearance of motion in movies. If you want to connect a soundbar, it supports Dolby Atmos passthrough but not DTS:X, which is disappointing as most UHD Blu-Rays use DTS:X for the main audio track.

The best budget small TV we've tested is the TCL 43S455. It's a decent TV, and while you're losing out on features and performance compared to the higher-end models, it still provides good value for a low-cost model. It comes with the Roku TV smart platform built-in, which has a user-friendly interface that's easy to learn, and there are many apps you can download through the app store. Its remote doesn't have a built-in mic, but you can still access voice assistant features through the Roku app on your phone, and it even has a unique private listening feature that lets you transfer the audio to your phone or headphones.

It upscales lower-resolution content well, which is great for watching cable TV or DVDs, and it uses a flicker-free backlight at most backlight settings, which helps reduce eye strain during long viewing sessions. It looks best in dark rooms as it displays deep blacks with remarkable black uniformity, but as expected for an entry-level TV, it doesn't get very bright, so it's best to avoid placing it in a bright room.

If you want better picture quality or prefer getting something bigger, there are more 43-inch TVs you can get for under $300, like the TCL 43S455. It's a 4k TV with better picture quality than the TCL 3 Series 2019 because of its higher resolution; it also displays deeper blacks with nearly perfect black uniformity for a satisfying dark room experience. Even if you want to use it in a room with a few lights around, it has decent peak brightness but doesn't get bright enough to fight a ton of glare. It comes with Roku TV built-in, and it has a few extra features, like a built-in mic on the remote that you can use for voice control.

This TV also supports HDR; however, it doesn't add much because it can't display a wide range of colors and doesn't get bright enough to make highlights stand out. However, there are no TVs under $300 that deliver a good HDR experience, so you aren't losing much here. For watching SDR content, it has okay accuracy without being calibrated, so you'll only need to calibrate it if you want the most accurate colors possible.

So I bought a Roku TCL 32” for my bedroom.  From day one, I couldn’t stream Netflix because it couldn’t load properly and I generally had to unplug the darn thing just to get back to home.  I had an old Roku stick laying around so figured it can’t hurt to see what happens to override Roku with....Roku.  It worked perfectly and Netflix plus all my other streaming services load and play faster than I’ve ever seen with my cheapo TV’s.  I’m posting this because I’ve looked for a solution for quite awhile now and figured I can’t be the only one.
