The best budget smart TV we've tested that uses the Roku TV platform is the TCL 5 Series/S535 2020 QLED. Although this is a 2020 model, you can still find it in 2022 because TCL hasn't released a newer model with Roku. It's an easy-to-use smart platform, amongst the most user-friendly interfaces out of all the platforms available, and it has a great selection of apps you can download through the app store.

It performs great in dark rooms because it has a high native contrast ratio that produces deep blacks, and it has a decent local dimming feature that improves the picture quality in dark scenes. The black uniformity is also good, but there's some blooming around bright objects in dark scenes. It displays a really wide color gamut for HDR thanks to its quantum dot technology, and it has impressive gradient handling with minimal banding, so HDR content looks good.

Unfortunately, it's not a bright TV as it has low peak brightness in SDR and HDR, meaning it doesn't get bright enough to fight glare in well-lit rooms or make highlights stand out in HDR. Also, its reflection handling is only decent, so it's best to avoid placing it in a bright room. However, it's still one of the best smart budget TVs we've tested.

If you simply want something cheaper, look into the TCL 5 Series/S535 2020 QLED. It's a lower-end model compared to the TCL 6 Series/R635 2020 QLED, so it has a 60Hz refresh rate and doesn't have VRR support, but it's still good enough for gaming. It has a very good response time with minimal blur, and the low input lag makes gaming feel responsive. It has a VA panel with a high native contrast ratio and has a decent local dimming feature that makes blacks look gray in the dark, but that means it also has a narrow viewing angle. Also, it has Dolby Vision support if you want to game with the Xbox Series X, but it doesn't get bright enough to make highlights pop in HDR.

If you're a gamer and want the best TV with the Roku smart platform, the R635 is a great choice. If you want to spend less money and don't mind sacrificing a bit on features, then the S535 is a good alternative.

 Need I say more? The buttons are very easily pressed accidentally. Unfortunately, the TCL/Roku TV is a device that comes with advertising not just in the home screen but also built into the physical buttons. So my advice to TCL is allow the customer to disable the buttons in the settings or at the very least, offer customers the option to order a remote without the paid advertiser buttons so they can have a better TV viewing experience.  General Impression: My previous TV was a 2017 TCL Roku 55 inch 5-Series

 So we sent it back.  But we did like the built-in Roku in that Hisense. Got spoiled by it, in fact. That's why we got this TV: a TCL with Roku

 And in fact it is best to understand this TV as a Roku more than a TCL one. (TVs base on Android and Amazon Fire work the same way: by providing the user interfaces for the TV's operating systems.)  On the plus side, everything that is good about Roku is good about this TV: a simple and functional remote, an app-based user interface, ease of adding and using streaming channels (or apps, same thing), and much else, including what seem like hundreds of additional streaming channels that are added to the "Live TV" app, the list of which starts with your local over-the-air stations, for which you will need to scan the atmosphere with an antenna.  This is important to us because we want good sound that won't bother neighbhors in the building, and there are many good inexpensive speaker systems (from Logitech, Klipsh and others) that can do the job. Other TV makers (such as Samsung and LG) have only bluetooth and/or optical audio connections). Also, with a direct connection like this, the TV remote controls the volume of the speaker system, so no additional remote is required for sound.  It also has a generous assortment of other ports: four HDMI inputs, including one that supports an audio return channel, or ARC; a USB jack for your own media or provide pause and rewind for live over-the-air TV; optical digital audio out, an Ethernet port, WiFi wireless networking; DLNA compliance (look it up), and the ability to add Apple TV functions (basically putting an Apple TV box inside your TV)  On the minus side, there is some color and brightness non-uniformity, but that's typical of LED displays
