I know next to nothing about anything music related, cannot play any instruments, don't know much about the terminology, cable types, etc.

I just graduated college and have much more free time now. I want to get a cheap bass line synthesizer to just play around with. Nothing serious, just make cool beats when I'm bored to unwind after work or something. What do I need to get started? I've tried searching but its such a deeper dive than I anticipated with a lot of "it depends". Usually the uses I see are not "messing around" so its a lot more stuff listed than I think I need.

TL;DR:. Roland JU06A: Traditional design, lovely sound, would be good to learn translatable sound design for other synths, $400. Teenage Engineering OP-1: Basically it’s own DAW, fun and intuitive design, portable, steep and non-translatable learning curve, $1100.
