 We've got the outlet adapter for the US outlets and we have got a dock cable. So let's again pull this out and it looks similar in a lot of ways to what I've got now for the Garmin setup. This again you can plug the micro or the standard USB into there to charge it. And now let's just take a quick second and detach, looks like I'm going to have to unhook the watch and get it out

 So it'll be very interesting to see I'm not really sure how this exactly unhooks I don't know if it unscrews if I actually have to unscrew it in order to use it for other functions but again I'll look at that in the quick start guide. I just powered it on and as you can see the first thing it starts doing is searching for the GPS sensors straight away without really giving you much of a choice on that so that can be a real battery hog if you happen to be indoors like I am now so let's hope that I can cancel that and that I did

 So we have got the GPS itself in here and it comes attached to a watch as you can see there. Let's see what else is in the box. We have got a plug, looks like it's got a multi-tap type adapter that aside from just plugging into a standard of an outlet, a standard US outlet, could be configured for other things as well. So let's see what else is in here

And as you can see, rather than a straight GPS watch such as the Nike Plus that I've had for several months and the new Garmin 4Runner 10, the Magellan Switch indicates swimming, biking, as well as running a crossover. So for all different types of activities and there's just a number of things mentioned here as well as what the display looks like. So let's open the box and take a look

  All in all, I'm hard pressed to spend $300 on a device that does pretty much what my smartphone does. My smartphone doesn't have a barometric altimeter or temperature sensor, it can't be mounted to my wrist, but it does play music, keep track of my distances, paces, etc.  Bottomline: If you a serious outdoor athlete and need the ability to have GPS, altimeter, and temperature on your wrist, then consider this. Otherwise, consider using your smartphone with a much cheaper G-Shock watch

Pricey smartphone alternative

 If you can't get the distance calculations done right, the rest of it is just absolute garbage. So Magellan, you need to jump up and either fix this or scrap it because right now it's a totally worthless watch, except for possibly the temperature sensor, and I haven't done any testing on that to see how accurate that temperature sensor is sitting that close to your wrist. But other than that, right now in the shipping version that we have with the firmware version that's in there now, it's a solid, I cannot recommend this watch. If you need to have a GPS fitness calculator right now, my recommendation is do not buy this watch

 There's been a lot of anecdotal evidence when we look at tracks to show or that tend to show that the Magellan tends to bounce around a little bit, but we really don't know which device is more accurate, so we're going to put this to the test now in a quarter-mile walk test. We'll let you know what the results are. We finished our first pass, 1,320 feet, exactly on the rollotape, and when we take a look at the two devices, the Garmin says we have gone 0.25 miles, which is a quarter of a mile

 This is one of the higher spots. It's flat. It's fairly straight. The pavement is in very good condition, so it makes it very easy to get an extremely accurate measurement with the rollotape, so I'm very confident in the measurement that we got, the distance that we traveled, and now let's go back to the studio and download the tracks and take a look at the tracks and see what they say

 I don't know. We won't know until we download that track. The Magellan, on the other hand, says we have traveled 0.28 miles, even a greater inaccuracy than when the unit was held completely stable

 It looks like it might be a challenge.  I have used the watch on several runs and actually wore it with my Garmin 305 to compare performance.  Results: Unfortunately, I found several issues with the watch that make it somewhat inferior to the Garmin. First of all, regarding accuracy, on a 5 mile run, it actually reflected a 5

 The battery life was not very good, lasted maybe 2/3 of the time of the Garmin. It also has a very complex menu system to navigate. I still have not found out how to properly reset it for a new long run. I actually accidentally reset it once but have not figured out how I did it since

  Results: Unfortunately, I found several issues with the watch that make it somewhat inferior to the Garmin. First of all, regarding accuracy, on a 5 mile run, it actually reflected a 5.35 mile run versus the Garmin 305 which I know is not accurate. It also is very difficult to see with the black background and white letters outside in the sun

Now, the Switch Series is right here on my wrist, the whole thing, both devices, the Switch and the Switch Up. Now, basically what this waterproof device does is it monitors your GPS position, your altitude, your speed and whatnot, basically to kind of give you an idea of what you're doing, how fast you're doing

 But if you're going to be plugging it up every day to upload to run, you're probably not going to need that much battery life. Now the Switch Up is $349 for Magellan's web store and the Switch, the step-down model, is $279. I've been Antoine Goodwin with Cnet.com and we've been taking a look at the Magellan Switch series, Switch and Switch Up

 As I said earlier, the Switch and Switch Up can be paired via USB for charging. They get about 8 hours of battery life out of the box from a full charge but the Switch Up can also be paired with a battery booster that boosts it to 16 hours. But if you're going to be plugging it up every day to upload to run, you're probably not going to need that much battery life. Now the Switch Up is $349 for Magellan's web store and the Switch, the step-down model, is $279

 It's great for things like running, walking and because it's waterproof you can also use it for swimming. It can be paired with an ANT Plus accessory like a heart rate monitor or a bicycle cadence monitor or a foot pod or a power meter so you can get other information to be logged along with your actual position data and then later on you can take the Switch and pair it up with your computer and upload all of that data to active.magellangps.com to get a good look at the path that you've taken, complete with GPS coordinates, elevation changes, heart rate if it's present

Monitor your next run or swim with the Magellan Switch series - First Look

 I was expecting these two watches to be within +/- 2.5% of one another and as long as I would give the Magellan a little extra time it would be within this "limit". This is fine for my because I will primarily be using this on my bike so I using have plenty of time to let the watch acquire satellites while I'm airing up my tires and what not.  I see that many reviews say they have seen poor accuracy, but after I updated the firmware and started giving the watch a little more time to acquire satellites I did not see this issue

 +5% of the Forerunner and on route that I was confident in the distance (from previous group runs with several other GPS watches confirming the distance). I downloaded the data and on the map view I could see that the Magellan thought I was bouncing from one side of the street to the other, where the Garmin had a smooth tracking (on the correct side of the street).  I downloaded the latest software and, on my next run, I waited an extra ~1 min after the watch said it had acquired satellites before taking off. This time I got much better results - within 1% of the Garmin results on the same course

 The Garmin Edge has been the gold standard for so long that it was a hard choice even with the higher price. In the end the price was the biggest selling point for the Switch Up and I was able to get speed/cadence sensors for my bike and still money left over.  I want to expand on a couple points:  GPS Accuracy: I have seen reviews that have stated poor GPS accuracy. In order to determine the accuracy I did 20 workouts (some running and some biking) with both the Magellan and my Garmin Forerunner (and a couple with my wife's Forerunner 405 too)
