This is definitely the TP-LINK's problem, even if your laptop is the catalyst for the problem. Your router just shouldn't be doing that. Also, your laptop does support 2.4 GHz as well as 5 GHz. I'd check to see if there's a firmware update (looks like there are two versions available) you need to apply and perhaps perform a factory reset.

Well first off I will just say that you are getting way above what the typical wifi setup yields. Second, based off the fact that everything your going to be doing is connected via wifi, gig internet is a waste unless you really need that upload speed. In terms of the router, the TP Link is the better of the two considering that it actually has a multi gig WAN port which is better than doing WAN Link aggregation. I generally don't like TP-Link but that router is the better of the two.
