 The antenna flop is just a really good way to show you the cheapness. But yeah, this one just feels a lot better. And for something that I'm deploying outdoors, well, I want kind of higher quality stuff for something that I'm deploying in a home. I need a design that's not this

 Everything just worked. And I was even able to follow some unified tutorials step by step in Ohmata. And they worked just fine. I mean, they copied the entire interface even down to the little side settings menu where you adjust the individual device parameters, such as the access point radios, VLANs and all that stuff

 In terms of overall performance, I'll have some more videos coming out here in the near future about the performance of the access points and the switches and we'll go more in depth and, you know, really focus on the features and stuff of these things. But just overall, I have no complaints about the stuff's performance. This access point is a freaking monster and outperforms the U6LR. So it really comes down to the design sacrifices that they had to make in order to meet this price point with the fact that they're a new platform

 So really, TP link, you guys are there on the software level. You guys are there on the hardware performance level. I would love to see you guys up the actual like industrial design, because that's really the only place that you're not competitive right now. This doesn't come close to this

TP Link Omada Overview - A Challenger Approaches!

Right now running a Netgear R7000 running DD-WRT. Ive been experiencing a lot of issues lately and have to reboot often.  This happened to my last router a few years back as well.  

Do all routers eventually start to "crap" out?  

Im guessing this is pretty outdated as well - so might as well upgrade to something better. I'm not so sure I need DDWRT anymore, since the majority of the time im not home, im connected to all sorts of wifi (and use a vpn), so I guess I really dont care if I have it anymore.

Budget is around 200 - range has been fine on this, but wouldnt mind a little boost. I know new wifi standards have been released since then, so an update would be nice.

I do a lot of gaming (mostly LAN, but I have friends come over and use wifi), so any extra GAMING features i guess would be cool, but im assuming they all probably offer the same thing, just some get their prices jacked up for GAMING purposes.

Do all routers eventually just start to die (nighthawk R7000)? (Need a replacement)

 I could only get about 300 to 400 MB/s from ER2706 vs close to my actual gigabit connection that comes from one of my ISPs. My second internet account is a business account which has a much faster ping (1 ms) or less latency and 600 MB/s download speed, compare to the Spectrum 1 GB/s line with 20ms ping. So with the ER605 I could take advantage of much faster ping like my business line while reaching out to the close to maximum download speed of the faster internet with almost 800 to 850MB/s outcome when merging the two lines. This was obviously the big deal for me and I was surprised to see such outcome from the cheeper device but that was exactly the main reason I bought them both to compare

 The older one is different in the design when you compare the two together. The newer ER605 is the one with more RAM and faster CPU and it's the one I purchased for comparison. The best sign to know the difference between the two is the USB WAN port available on the newer ER605. Now after testing the response time and speed measurements between the two, newer ER605 and ER2706, the two different transmission scenarios on load balancing and link backup with exact the same configuration on web filtering and firewall options, it turns out that the cheaper but newer ER605 with the 4 cores CPU has a mush faster response time as well as much faster internet speed and bandwidth when you set them up for WAN aggregation and the difference with my internet configuration were huge

Not as powerful as the ER605 counterpart

I have this one on my LG CX and it works like a charm. I get an avg of 320mbps. I do not have problems with it, I’ve never had to unplug it since I plugged it for the first time.

I’m looking for a USB Ethernet Gigabit Adapter that works without any hiccups on the LG CX. I currently have a UGREEN USB 3.0 adapter which works, but I have to unplug and plug it back in every time I restart the TV, which is a hassle. Has anyone here found one that works well?

POOR TECHNICAL SUPPORT

I love apple. That’s why I’m here. My old setup was really good in theory. On the right side of the house was an airport time capsule. I had a hardwired cat 7 Ethernet from that to an AirPort Extreme on the left side of the house. 

For whatever reason though, it was just unstable. I’d wake up to over 50 alerts that my cameras went offline. Constant notifications throughout the day. 

Even my ping speed was like 70-80 on my Mac when hardwired. 


Welp, someone said to upgrade and I did. I was hesitant because in my brain I figured Apple was still optimizing HomeKit for their routers, idk why. But anyway I upgraded. Got the linksys velop. And literally all my issues are solved.

The last AirPort Extreme and time capsule were designed in 2013 (still sold until 2018 though). That’s 8 year old technology. Upgrade to something better. It’s worth it.

PSA: Ditch Apple’s Airport routers for new mesh routers.

Not quite ready to replace a PFSense or OPNSense firewall, but not terrible.

We recently moved to property with a house centrally located on a roughly 60 acre plot. At the moment we’re getting by with an ASUS AC1900, and I’ve had mediocre results with ASUS mesh in the past (whether wireless or an Ethernet backhaul,) and I’m putting together a plan to upgrade the entire wireless network.

What I’m trying to achieve
- NOT coverage for the entire property
- Coverage about 300’ around the perimeter of the house. This would reach out to detached garage where I’d like to have cameras.
- Of course, good coverage inside to keep the family from breathing down my neck

The house
- Built in the early 1900’s.
- Wood frame and siding with metal roof
- Roughly 50-60’ square. Two stories.
- Full attic and crawl space access for POE runs to all four corners

What gear I’m eyeing
- TP-Link EAP225-Outdoor for opposing corners of the house
- Omada OC200 controller (not confident enough in my docker skills to run it there yet)
- All devices hardwired back to central rack

Questions and thoughts
- In the future I may run fiber to a room in the garage. Could add additional AP out there later.
- Would the external 225’s provide adequate connection inside the house?

Appreciate the sanity check, and any thoughts or feedback!

WiFi coverage for farm

It is much more reliable than my raspberry pi but it gets updates later than other platforms

  

My old consumer grade Linksys WRT 1900AC router finally died this morning and I need to replace it. I am currently running on the ISP’s equipment until I decide what I want to order as a replacement. I have run DDWRT and Tomato on routers in the past and enjoyed them. 

My Background

I work in IT, but networking isn’t my strongest skill. I have a somewhat unique setup currently at home. For service I have a local fiber provider who brings fiber to the home, and has the ability to put their equipment in bridge mode, with ethernet hand off. I currently have a 500x500 package, and the service is capable of 1000x1000 with higher packages promised in the future. They are currently using carrier grade NAT, but promise to offer IPV6 in the future. 

The house is ranch style with a basement, (About 2000 sq ft) and I have a wall mounted mini rack centrally located in the basement, where I currently have all 3000ft of ethernet in my home (2 to 4 ethernet ports in every room, with optional places for AP, and security cameras wired throughout). Pictures available if you guys want. This all feeds into a 48 port unmanaged switch. I had been running a Pi Hole in Docker on my NAS as well. On an average day we are probably sitting around 20 devices with a mix of wired and wireless. I expect this to grow.

I am not looking for anything super fancy or time consuming, but want a new router/AP that’s secure, has a reasonable amount of advanced features and once set up is basically set it and forget it. My main concern is something that get security updates promptly, and is able to take advantage of my WAN bandwidth now, and for reasonable future upgrades. Stable, secure wifi with a long range and good speeds is important. It would be kind of nice to easily separate the IOT devices into their own network for some further isolation but this is kind of a secondary requirement.

Do I go big with some dedicated hardware (not an old existing PC, not power or size efficient) to run a PFSense router, and then do something for an AP? 

Do I go Ubiquiti, get a cloudkey2 to manage both an Ubiquiti AP and router? (If so what models?)

Do I go for a higher end consumer based router and AP combo again to save some money? 

I would say my budget is $350, but if I could do it for less that would be nice as we have a wedding coming up pretty soon.
