The Vizio M58Q7-J01 is the best 58 inch TV for gaming. It's great for gaming because it has a few extra features, and it also performs well in dark rooms if you tend to game in a dark environment. It's also a budget-friendly TV, meaning it won't break the bank either. We tested the 55 inch model, and our results are also valid for the 58 inch variant.

It has a 60Hz panel and HDMI 2.0 bandwidth, so although you can't play the latest games in 4k @ 120Hz, you won't have any issues with 4k @ 60Hz games. The TV also supports HDR, but some people may be disappointed that it doesn't get bright enough to make highlights pop. It has low input lag for a responsive gaming experience, and motion looks fairly smooth thanks to its quick response time. There's even FreeSync variable refresh rate (VRR) support to reduce screen tearing, but the refresh rate range is narrow.

Unfortunately, it has a narrow viewing angle, and the image looks washed out from the sides, so it's not a good choice for co-op gaming. On the plus side, its VA panel has a high native contrast ratio for deep blacks, but the local dimming feature doesn't do much to improve the picture quality in dark scenes. Besides that, it's one of the best 58 inch TVs for gaming.

The Vizio M58Q7-J01 is the best choice if you're looking for a mid-range option. It's a slightly smaller TV compared to the Samsung Q60/Q60B QLED with a 58-inch screen size, but it doesn't make much difference compared to a 60-inch display. While you get similar picture quality to the Samsung, it has a worse smart system that can feel laggy at times, and you can't download any extra apps besides the pre-installed ones, so this is the trade-off you have to make for getting something for less. Still, it's a good TV with a few extra gaming features if you're a gamer.

The accuracy before calibration is excellent, as colors look great, so you don't have to pay extra to get it calibrated, and it displays a wide range of colors in HDR. It has a fantastic native contrast ratio, so blacks are deep and uniform if you're in a dark room, and bright highlights stand out with very little blooming. There's a local dimming feature that's designed to improve contrast, but it's mediocre overall.

Great bang for the buck GAMING 4K TV - VIZIO M-Series Quantum 8 4K HDR

1 milliseconds in Calibrated mode and 4.4ms in Game mode. That puts the MQ7 well below the 10ms threshold we use to consider a TV among the best for gaming.

For gaming, the MQ7 supports variable refresh rate (VRR) and AMD FreeSync. Using an HDFury Diva HDMI matrix(Opens in a new window), we measured an input lag of 62.1 milliseconds in Calibrated mode and 4.4ms in Game mode

The MQ7 uses Vizio&rsquo;s SmartCast platform for its connected features. SmartCast lets you access apps for the biggest video streaming services such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix, and YouTube, along with free live streaming channels through Pluto TV or Vizio&rsquo;s WatchFree+ service. You won&rsquo;t find nearly as many niche apps or services as you will on a Fire TV or a Roku TV, but SmartCast's offerings are sufficient for most people.

The remote is the same flat, rectangular black wand that comes with the MQ6. A large, circular navigation pad just above the center dominates its simple layout. Power, input, and menu buttons sit above the pad, along with a pinhole microphone and dedicated service buttons for Amazon Prime Video, Crackle, Disney+, Netflix, Peacock, and Tubi.  Not the best experience. Roku's grid of apps is simple and familiar, and if you want your homepage to show more relevant programming, Google TV does a much better job. I'd recommend Vizio owners connect a streamer, like a Roku Express Plus 4K or Chromecast with Google TV, and forget Vizio's system.        David Katzmaier/CNETIn its favor, SmartCast plays well with phones -- you can easily cast video and photos from Android or Apple phones using Chromecast and AirPlay, respectively -- as well as smart speakers like Echo and Nest, which you can use to command the TV hands-free

&nbsp; Vizio supports both major types of HDR, HDR10 and Dolby Vision, in the M-Series. So does every other major TV maker except Samsung, which lacks Dolby Vision support. The M-Series has a 60Hz refresh-rate panel -- Vizio's "Clear Action 360" is bunk -- so it doesn't have the same motion performance or input capabilities as true 120Hz TVs.&nbsp; As a 60Hz TV, the M-Series can't accept 4K/120 FPS signals from Xbox Series X, PS5 and high-end PC gaming cards, but it is one of the most affordable TVs to support variable refresh rate and AMD FreeSync (up to 60Hz)

 The MQ7 doesn't have the gaming chops of higher-end TVs but does work with variable refresh rate, which in my tests helped some games on compatible devices, like the Xbox Series X, indeed look smoother. On the other hand Vizio's smart TV system can't hold a candle to Roku, Google TV or Samsung, but you can always add an affordable 4K streaming device to overcome that issue.&nbsp; Overall I'd recommend saving up a bit more for something like the TCL 6-Series or Sony X90J, both of which are superior for movies, TV and gaming, but if you'd rather keep that cash or spend it on something else -- like, you know, stuff to watch or games to play -- the MQ7 is a superb value.&nbsp;

I preferred Roku's results to that query, which were arranged in rows like "Available in 4K," "New releases," "Free," "Available with your Netflix subscription," and offered a lot more choices. Saying "Switch to PlayStation" worked the same on both for switching inputs, but "Switch to Input 2" failed on Vizio while succeeding on the Roku (Moral: name your inputs).&nbsp; Beyond voice, Vizio's SmartCast smart TV system still lags Roku (my favorite) and others like Google TV and Samsung, although it's roughly about the same level as LG's new system in my book

 SO-SO: 1) The main interface "SmartCast" doesn't want to load every so often, requiring a reboot. 2) The mobile remote app looks promising, but doesn't consistently turn on the TV, so you still need the physical remote handy. 3) WatchFree+ has an issue playing adds, where it starts to play the first few seconds of each add, then restarts the add so you hear the first few seconds again.  Even if you turn off all the sound adjustments/effects/settings on the TV and my Vizio sound bar, the TV still attempts to adjust volume dynamically, which means that quiet portions of movies/shows go completely quiet even when there's supposed to be a little background noise. Then the sound pops back on. It's really noticeable when characters are having a quiet conversation with gaps between speech. Who the hell (forgot to) test basic sound functionality before releasing to production? This defect applies to all input sources and is huge in my opinion

Quick and dirty product needs refinement

It's Just Okay...

 Before I mounted on the wall, I wanted to play with the settings and get things tuned. First the sound from the TV is OK, not great but I have an open living room with kitchen behind me so needed the Soundbar to raise the sound and increase clarity. All Good so far. First I noticed the TV (even with Performance mode selected) takes nearly 20 seconds to turn on
