 Hi, I'm Thom. I just got done skiing the Volkl Kendo 88. This is a really solid option for somebody who's your really strong intermediate, really athletic intermediate, up through your expert level skier that's looking for a ski that's going to spend most of their time on in the hard pack but still have some good all-mountain versatility to it. Pretty unique construction in this ski with the titanal frame and the 3D radius sidecut

 It's a little bit more of a ski that you've got to weight on into the turn. The overall shape does allow for good versatility in pivot and smearing as well when you start to get off trails. It's a great ski for a bump skier, somebody who's going to ski some tighter blades but doesn't necessarily want to go to a wider platform.

i need some help deciding which backcountry skis to buy. I have been skiing the Volkl Gotama the past seven years, and they are totally fine for what they are - i only use them for resorting and off-piste. The Gotamas are really nice in deep powder, but they aren’t that playful and fun. I find them a bit to stiff, and not very agile. Its also worth noting that we don’t get deep powder every week, so it would be nice to have something that also works for harsher conditions. I currently have a pair of Salomon QST pro 100 boots that works fine for skinning, and i have decided on the Salomon Shift bindings. I will probably use them 70/30 resorting and skinning. Im 180cm and weight in at 80kg. I don’t have much experience skinning and i know weight is important, but i don’t feel like going narrower than 95 (feel free to argue against me).

New backcountry skis

 It has peat and all throughout, and it is a stiff all-mountain charger. I really like these skis. I spent a lot of time skiing on the East Coast, and this would make a fantastic river of one for an East Coast skier who spends a lot of their time carving on groomers. It was stiff throughout

 If you have a tendency to get knocked back into the back seat, this ski's gonna punish you. Skis work differently for different kinds of skiers. Last season with everyones recommendations, I got myself some great boots, and Rustler 9's. These skis are absolutely awesome for off-piste, and having fun in the snow! However I'm looking for something better on-piste, or handles the firmer off-piste snow better. I'm a big fan of the glades, but I found the Rustlers lacking last year in bite (on the icy days) and for control at speed. 

Basically I need something a bit firmer, better at speed, but light enough to move through the trees on the days where there hasn't been enough snow! I frequent the Eastern Townships &amp; planning to get out to VT this year finally (thank god)!

PS: Thoughts on Montec for a decent shell? It's a toss up between them and TREW for me

Looking for Ice Coast recommendations - second ski addition

 I  ended up buying Kendo 88 skis. I was blown away it had the grip and  sheer speed of the Ti 82s but was more compliant in the powder and  off-piste.

 Does great on the groomers, easily maneuverable through our tight trees, and even has enough float for some shallower powder days. Does have tip and tail rocker, so that does help with the flotation. Not as much taper as the wider skis, but enough to cut through that soft snow and make it easier and smoother. We got the 3D radius from Volkl, and that really helps make the ski make really any type of turn at any time

 Definitely on that advanced to expert level skier is going to get the most out of it. Does have that just traditional Volkl feel to it that a lot of these skiers that ski hard snow just really have come to know and love. So come to SkiEssentials.com, check out this Volkl Kendo 88

 But same great ski. So this past year they adopted the titanal frame that's found in the Mantras. Same thing applies here. We've got the wood core with the titanal frame, goes all the way around the tips and the tails

Advanced Colorado skier (5'10"/160) trying to decide if there's anything else out there to round out my resort quiver. I currently ski Blizzard Atris (184) for deeper days and the Rustler 9s (180) for dry days or days when there's only an inch or two of fresh.

I spend 90% of my days in bumps and trees (you can generally find me at Mary Jane or Eagle Wind territory) and am thinking an even narrower directional ski for dry days that excels even more in bumps than the Rustler. I just don't know if there's anything out there, besides dedicated mogul skis, that would handle significantly better in the bumps than the Rustlers. 

I love playful skis so the RMU Apostle 96s (not narrower than the 9s but apparently incredibly playful) caught my eye but have also heard really great things about the Ripstick 88.  If I'm really trying to optimize my bump and tree skiing for "frontside" skiing here in Colorado, I want to know if there's anything I should be looking into.

Elan Ripsticks for 3rd ski in quiver?

 This ski handles that really well and just lets you make big high speed turns throughout the whole day. So check it out on SkiEssentials.com.  Certainly one of my favorite shades of blue on this ski, which looks really snazzy in person. Hopefully it comes through on camera as well. This is certainly a staple in the all-mountain category. One of the strongest, one of the most precise skis in that 88-90mm range

 With that tailored titanal frame, the thick part ends about here. In order to take up some of the lack of metal in the very shovel, they've put in that carbon weave and that makes it more torsionally stiff, a little bit more responsive. That's where the lowering of the swing weight comes from and makes this thing a little bit easier to get up on edge than it was in years past. Just a great couple of different advantages for this Kendo 88

 For this year, we get a tailored titanal frame and tailored carbon tips. We do start with their multi-layer wood core and we do get two sheets of metal, the upper laminate is that frame, so extending around the tail with a little break here, metal underfoot, another break, and then a frame in the shovel as well. When you go to initiate and complete turns, you get that full metal over the edge as well as that underfoot zone as well. The breaks in the frame do allow for a more natural progressive flex in the ski, so for that all-mountain skier who's looking to really bend this thing, this ski is a great choice

 Tailored carbon tips as well. They've taken these little carbon weaves and put them in a specific manner to make the torsional stiffness a little bit greater. With that tailored titanal frame, the thick part ends about here.  Excellent grip on the ice, not too bad in soft snow. We had it out there this past year, three, four inches, something like that, no problem there. Any deeper and wider is going to be better, but for most skiers, most of the days, this 88 millimeter underfoot width is just the perfect range for all mountain, and the Kendo is consistently at the higher end of that spectrum in terms of performance. In terms of weight, this 177 here is 1904 grams on the scale here, so just shy of that 2000 gram marker
