You You You You Hey folks, I'm Jack faucet and welcome to this demo and review of the wampler tumnus deluxe overdrive This pedal has been out for a while and there have been loads of reviews of it So rather than going over it comprehensively What I wanted to share with you in this review is kind of how I like to use it as a tone sculpting Pedal as opposed to just as a standard overdrive pedal And I was thinking about kind of some different ways to dial it in and in doing so I went to wamplers website and downloaded the manual just to see what what are their thoughts on it and everything and I Actually discovered something that I love which is presets I just I love presets and the names of them the different knobs it whether they're good or not on anything I don't know if any of you remember the old fender supersonics used to come with like a preset card on top and you know would have Texas blues and lo-fi fuzz and one that was called plays itself Which I still don't fully understand is that like a player piano where something just comes out of the amp? I digress There were several cool presets on the manual and I thought that they were a good Representation actually having played around with it of some of the different sounds that this pedal can produce So I'm actually focusing this review on the presets that are in the wampler manual now It's based on the wampler tumnus, which is the smaller one the tumnus deluxe course has your basic level and gain You've got a normal and hot switch. You have a three band EQ and you have a buffer switch and Everything has great functionality Again, I think that what this pedal does exceptionally Well is kind of like you've heard the term probably foundation overdrive and I think this works really well as a foundation overdrive It's kind of like an always-on pedal. It's something that sculpts your tone that you base everything else off of now That's not to say that it can't work is just a great overdrive or even distortion on its own as well Like you just heard in the second tone high gain and juicy Which is I hope that the person who came up with the name high gain and juicy got a raise because that sells pedals Anyway, if you'll notice it has quite a dynamic range on the gain And I tend to like it with a little bit lower gain and not even necessarily going into something that's already Driving so like you heard in the intros playing this guitar the gibson es 335. I was playing into the Franklin amps 5e3 Playing clean initially and when you kick this on with the gain kind of back here on what was called the classic K tone It really didn't add almost any drive There was a bit of drive if I kind of dug in a little but this is on a humbucking guitar And the amp was not at the point of breakup, but it also wasn't just quiet either It was you know, it's a it's a 15 watt amp and it was up reasonably loud So that kind of tells you again the dynamic range of this pedal and its tone sculpting ability Now then afterwards the reason that I added in the wampler pantheon not only because I think these two pedals sound good together but to show you that even with a little bit of grit added that it's going into it still retains a Sweetness and doesn't just sound like saturated city

It still kind of has some nice character Now the three band EQ really is very very sculpting I found and I have found that you know The buffer actually makes a big difference also depending on how you're using the how you are using the EQ For instance, I found that the mids kind of didn't like being all the way up But you had more range on the mids at least in my setup with the buffer turned on the hot and normal switch again Big big difference. I particularly like it on normal, but I also tend to like Smoother sounding drive and on hot it definitely gets more gain

 They can be surprisingly finicky this pedal just works with those types of amps and works particularly well with single coils and I like that this pedal really works with Kind of bringing out the best of a guitar and an amplifier It does have its own sound to a certain degree but I think it also really emphasizes and kind of enhances your guitar and your amps tone and Works with them very very well. Of course the whole point to this type of pedal is that it's Transparent which I always thought was kind of silly because I think that K style pedals do have their own tone in a way But I think that it does work really really well last thing that I love about this is I'm a huge huge nerd and I love Narnia and so I love that in kind of a sea of Clones that are out there clones with a K. I love that they went with Tumnus, which has you know, not only the literary reference but almost in a slightly tongue-of-cheek way because of course you know all the other pedals out there seem to be some kind of slightly over-the-top mythical warrior and Mr. Tumnus in Narnia is just kind of is charming and peaceful and Slightly silly in a way, you know, of course he gets scared of Lucy and everything And I think it's really cool that they went with the Tumnus idea I think that's sort of a way that was done very very well in a nice contrast to other pedals that are out there Despite my mythical warrior comment

Archer vs mini klones

make no mistake, this pedal sounds AMAZING. the lead tone is easily the BEST lead tone i have ever heard (think joe satriani crystal planet) and i have played guitar since 1982.  the problem is that when you engage the boost, and that is how you are going to use this pedal (boosted gain and compression for soaring crystaline clear lead with awesome pinch harmonics, easy glide legato runs and amazing sustain) it is so LOUD and HISSY that the noise is unbearable and it makes the pedal unusable. what sad thing this is because there is no better sounding 80's shredder metal / lead pedal than this

 the noise is unbearable.  it's lead tone is so good it could have been a 11/10, but the noise makes it a 0/10 and unusable. so please come out with a quiet ver 3, brian wampler, i will give it another shot, the lead tone is amazing!

 Here's the pedal in the hot setting. It still sounds really good with the gain down low. It's nice and articulate, it's really fat sounding, it doesn't mush out or flub out. And the same thing in the higher settings of the gain setting

Wampler Tumnus Deluxe Pedal Review

I...think I'm ready to stop.

 I heard about this pedal and gave it a try. When I put my Philospher's Tone in front of it I can get tones all the way to very aggressive rock, with all kinds of sonics, feedback, you name it. It's not a rookie pedal at all (most decent OD pedals aren't), you have to work a while to balance it, but when you do it delivers.  The one thing that I suspected would be problematic, and it is: the placement of the jacks to the left and right of the power input

 Let's try it out with the Strat. I see that camera right over there is dying, so I'll switch over to the Strat and switch that battery. See you guys in a second. Alright, so I have gone ahead and I have plugged in my Fender 60s Rode 1 Strat

 I usually have it at 2 o'clock, and the hot switch engaged, and then I just dial in the level. This is where I think it sounds absolutely killer. Let's try it out with the Strat. I see that camera right over there is dying, so I'll switch over to the Strat and switch that battery

Got a bad one

 It was just that first rhythm, slightly crunchy, barely overdriving tone on my MacMall guitar with P9. It just sounded really, really great. So I was kicking the front end of the amp pretty good. I had the volume up about halfway, and I had the gain just about one quarter of the way up, and the EQ sort of flat

 I mean, I was cutting the mids a little bit, I think, and it just sounded really terrific. Just a really, really natural, great, you know, kind of stonesy rhythm tone. I dug it. So, the nice thing about these pedals is you can use them in front of a clean amp, and you can do everything from clean boost with them relatively, like really quite a clean, transparent boost, and then as soon as you bring the gain control up a bit, the overdrive character starts coming in, the tone changes a little bit, and you get that forward mid character going on that this style of pedal is known for

 So I was kicking the front end of the amp pretty good. I had the volume up about halfway, and I had the gain just about one quarter of the way up, and the EQ sort of flat.  I find that setting I found was with the mids cut a bit, treble no more than halfway up, and bass may be boosted, may be cut, depending on your amp tone. And then you can get kind of almost into like, making it sort of, you know, cop what an overdriven amp does. Okay, so let's get on with it, here's some sound examples.
