Review of WD Black SSD.  I purchased this as a replacement for my MX500, it cost 70 dollars and then was reduced to 62 and is 70 dollars now. At 70 dollars it is an okay deal, at 62 it is a much better deal. When I first upgraded my computer and I did not know much about ssd and purchased a mx500 m

 The best thing you can do is install SSD fresh if you are not savvy with this stuff and it will do a check list for you. This software is free

 But on AA SSD it reads around 3,000 and and writes around 2,500 so it is not quite as fast as advertised. I can't say what WD did but I wouldn't doubt they gauged those performance marks on the most popular ssd benchmark.  Windows 10 boots up slightly faster, about 2 seconds faster for 9.5 seconds

I have 6 x 6tb Western Digital red. I have been happy with them for the last 2 years, one failed about 3 months ago. I replaced it with a seagate ironwolf NAS drive and intend replacing them all with seagate as they fail.

Building a home media center (NAS) with a Raspberry Pi 4. I can't decide what kind of hard drive I should get. Please help me!

  The root of the issue is the payload size. By default it should use a payload size of 256 bytes as is standard with the PCIe 3.0 standard, but instead the drive will use 128 bytes, this causes read speeds to drop below 3.2GB/s and writes to remain under 1

2GB/s. This testing was also done with the gaming mode enabled in the WD dashboard software which disables certain latency harming power states within the SSD during inconsistent burst workloads.  The WD SN850 also had this issue but they released a firmware update that fixes it, thus restoring full performance even when using chipset lanes. The issue is at least from what I have gathered from reaching out to their support, is they are no longer working on firmware updates for the SN750 (likely unless enough customers complain about it), to get them to apply the fix that they did to the SN850, to the SN750

  The WD SN850 also had this issue but they released a firmware update that fixes it, thus restoring full performance even when using chipset lanes. The issue is at least from what I have gathered from reaching out to their support, is they are no longer working on firmware updates for the SN750 (likely unless enough customers complain about it), to get them to apply the fix that they did to the SN850, to the SN750.  My attached benchmark results are from the drive using the 128 bytes payload size as it is connected to my second m.2 slot on an Asus X570-E Strix

Great performance but there is one catch due to a firmware issue

It's remarkable in 2020 how it seems no-one is aware of the huge  difference in battery life that drives will give you on your laptop, regardless of them having low power states available. The controller and  the type of NAND used will both have a massive impact on how much power  the drive draws.

When you stretch that out to something like an ultraportable that has real world battery life of 12 hours, that difference can be pretty huge. And those tests are performed with continuous usage. If the drive has certain weaknesses  in terms of returning to its' low power state when your laptop is idle - or worse, your laptop is not allowing it to return to low power at all, which I have seen - then you could be looking at a sizeable dent in your battery life.

OEM Samsung drives tend to be at the head of the field when it comes to NVME, with certain drives being much better than others. And it is not always concrete that one brand will perform well at different capacities either. For instance, the 1TB version of the SM961 performs about 20 minutes better than the 512GB version (likely due to more efficient and dense NAND being used in the 1TB model).

Unfortunately Chris Ramsayer no longer does reviews for Tweaktown or Tomshardware, and they've dropped the real world battery life test from their reviews. So the above resource is the best one we'll probably ever have when it comes to selecting a good drive for laptops.

Even boot speed depends more on the firmware of the laptop, and the amount of software loaded at  startup on Windows, than the speed of the drive inside. I know that because I've witnessed 6 second bootup on a standard SATA SSD on a particularly well designed Toshiba Z30 laptop.

Hopefully this post will be useful for people asking about why their laptops have seen a reduction in battery life after they've installed a new SSD, and for people wanting the best battery life possible for their notebooks.

Also to follow on from that, it must be said that if you compared the SATA drives and the NVME drives, the most efficient SATA drives rank better than the most efficient NVME drives, and on average NVME drives do give worse battery life than SATA drives.

And it is not certain that newer models of drives will bring improvements in battery life. With mass market drives, manufacturers tend to look towards reducing manufacturing cost as a priority, and then optimizing the parts used with efficient firmware. So if a newer design uses a less efficient, but cheaper NAND, you will almost certainly see reductions in battery life no matter how much work goes into optimizing for the best power consumption possible. This is demonstrated by the Crucial MX300 coming far ahead of the MX500 in the SATA charts, and the 860 EVO performing terribly in comparison to the aforementioned 850 EVO (particularly the V2 48 layer version).

Hopefully this post will be useful for people asking about why their laptops have seen a reduction in battery life after they&#39;ve installed a new SSD, and for people wanting the best battery life possible for their notebooks.

TL;DR - SSDs matter because every NAND type produced has differences in power consumption and how the firmware uses it. Don&#39;t rely on idle power figures released by manufacturers, they do not reflect real world use. SATA drives tend be better than NVME drives. Newer doesn&#39;t necessarily mean better. If you are looking for a good NVME drive, most OEM Samsung drives are near the top (though there are still variations between the different models/capacities). Samsung 850 EVO Version 2 with 48 layer 3D NAND is, to my knowledge, the best of any drive.

BONUS TIP: Ever wondered what difference NVME drives make in game loading times compared with SATA drives? Or what improvements PCIe Gen 4 will bring to the table vs Gen 3 in this regard?

The answer is, for the most part, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGdI2rNsWiE">very, very little</a>. So, unless you&#39;re going to use it for something else, don&#39;t spend a ton of money on an expensive high performance drive thinking it will load your games faster - it won&#39;t. Spend your money on a good value drive with a high endurance rating and no reported issues with drop-offs in performance.

Good choice on HDD, the Western Digital Black are said to be good for 20 years, that is way better than you’ll get out of any SSD, reason enough (I have an 8TB Black myself).

For my digital listening, I have a WD Black 5TB HDD which goes through my rPi (running Volumio) and then to my DAC etc.

Do different types of storage devices make a difference?

 Since doing so, I have noticed faster boot times and loading times for my games, however, I feel I might have missed a setting somewhere in some applications for writing speeds, as it seems to be about the same as before (for example downloading from Steam). However, overall, I would give this product a 4 star rating because it is definitely an upgrade and improvement from my prior setup. If this product fits in your budget, I say go for it.

So I purchased this product to replace/update a traditional disc drive in a PC - I purchased the 1TB SSD. I easily installed in into my motherboard, BUT, this product did not come with the necessary screws to secure it to the motherboard. So, I had to order a separate product after the fact to do so which was a minor inconvenience. I purchased a drive cloning software separate as well to move everything over to the SSD including windows

I purchased a drive cloning software separate as well to move everything over to the SSD including windows. Since doing so, I have noticed faster boot times and loading times for my games, however, I feel I might have missed a setting somewhere in some applications for writing speeds, as it seems to be about the same as before (for example downloading from Steam). However, overall, I would give this product a 4 star rating because it is definitely an upgrade and improvement from my prior setup

Seems to be a good product so far.
