 The sheer amount of mess left in the aftermath of races is wild, and yet almost never affects framerate. I've had some bad slowdown on Xbox fighting through a field of tightly-packed RVs tearing each other to bits, but other than that, it's been extremely stable. The AI deserves a special mention as well for giving as good as it takes, and they're tough but fallible foes. They ruin my races occasionally, but remember, that's the point

 Each has been meticulously detailed to look like a hand-painted, hastily welded rust bucket, and while they're not licensed, gearheads are sure to recognise a classic Volvo 240 estate, a Honda CRX or a Mk1 Escort when they see them. They're sound as cool as they look too. There are a tonne of great visual customisation options and liveries available, though Wreckfest is definitely screaming for some kind of rudimentary paint editor where we can spray our own numbers and messages. Performance tuning is included too, but it's a bit disappointing Bugbear opted to 8 the Forza and Need for Speed approach with clean and sterile upgrade menus that are in conflict with the grungy junkyard spirit we're bathed in everywhere else

Wreckfest's wonderful soft-body dynamics mean the cars can be bruised, battered and bent beyond recognition

Steam is having a 'Racing' theme sale this week

So much waiting..

I am not, by any means, a serious racer fan but I still keep up with various arcade style racers. Keeping that in mind, here is how both measured up in my eyes:  

**Gameplay and driving:** 

Dirt 5: It’s mostly about dirt rally and off-road racing. Not enough variety between cars. I honestly couldn’t tell one vehicle from the other. Most felt like toy cars, they all drove the same.  

Wreckfest: The game starts you up with an “American muscle” type of car (no licenses, made up cars). I think at this point, from the way muscle cars react in a racing game, I can immediately tell what is in store for me. And this muscle clicks on all the right strokes baby. The cars have a distinct weight to them, it takes a right amount of struggle to keep them honest on the road.  

**Graphics:**  

Dirt 5 was marketed as one of the first racers to have ray-tracing. Overall, I think the graphics are a big hit and miss. There are some big pluses there like the weather effects, the famous puddle reflections and different light times of the day. However, the minuses are too big to exactly call Dirt5 a good-looking game. The cars look average at best, the courses look ugly and uninspired. And devs have this notion, and I am not sure if it was there from the beginning, that this series should involve a lot of “dirt and mud” effects on cars and on the road. News flash, it looks ugly as hell. Those particle effects look like it's from Xbox 360 era. Big mistake. Also the devs should have probably gone for more fidelity instead of chasing Microsoft’s 120 fps marketing tagline. Overall, I was not a fan of the materials. Things just look wrong / ugly.

Wreckfest: While it doesn’t have ray-tracing or 120 fps for consoles, the game has a very clean look. I daresay it looks much better than the other.  

**Conclusion:**  

Dirt 5 is uninspired and amateurish. They even failed to sync tutorial videos of the different race modes with the spoken parts, and it shows how uninspired the development process is. For me, the game looks ugly and isn’t coherent (some parts look like xb360 days, other parts are very 2021). AI is boring, there is literally nothing memorable about racing AI bots in the campaign. The only fun part for me was the podcast featuring Nolan North and Troy Baker. I did look forward to those.  

Wreckfest is a nice surprise and big fun. Even from the awesome menu music, a sense of tension is immediately created and grabs hold after a few listens. Racing Campaign AI in this game is a very memorable experience. They don’t just follow the line without zero crashes. . Featuring usually 24 cars and smaller tracks, each race can create a very different battlefield littered with car wrecks and other stuff. AI is one of the prime reasons racing is fun, because you never know what crashes await on next turn.

I tried Dirt 5 and Wreckfest this week on Game Pass PC. Here is my take on both.

Gameplay is Ok, but the loading time is worst than any game I’ve played.

Only titles that are currently out or have a demo. Hell, they don't even have to be part of the Racing Fest. Bonus points if they're decent on the Steam Deck.

What racing games from the Steam Racing Fest would you recommend?

Short of it- long load times for sure. Hopefully this will be patched/optimized soon. Otherwise, so far it is a fun game. Have not played online yet but doing the single player, it has been very enjoyable

Long loading times but it IS a fun game

Wreckfest is pound for pound the best racer on the market, and has some of the best controller physics out there. The throttle feathering and manual clutching makes cars so smooth and gives you a huge advantage online.

 Car upgrades are easy to do, but slow to unlock. Biggest grievance is that the load times are quite bad for this generation consoles.

As Advertised, just slow load times.
