Yamaha HS5 Studio Monitors Review

Headphones are starting to get old, and I feel like Im missing frequencies.  I have a small studio (mpc one, 2x mono analog synths, a few sound modules) And have no Idea where to start.  Anyone recently went through a similar situation that can chime in?  Sorry if this is not directly related to synths but It will hopefully make my synths sound better/prolong my hearing.  looking mostly at budget - mid range speakers. Thanks everyone!

Recommendations for first time buying studio monitors

 I would still recommend these as a great set of mixing speakers. They pack a lot of punch, and do sound crisper than the HS80's..

Wasssap mothalovas! I'm coming from the previous model HS80, as one of mine recently blew. It's been interesting comparing the two. I thought they'd be more similar from most of the reviews I've read, but I feel like they definitely have uniquely different sounds. The HS80 (previous model) seemed to be a bit more tamed, with less pronounced highs

 The last octave has about minus three decibel roll-off, which likely won't be heard. All in all, the tweeters did a good job of projecting a nice, reasonably wide sweet spot. In terms of harmonic distortion, these speakers did very well. Most of the mid-range sits below one percent, with few small peaks, most likely too narrow to be heard

 The peak will make problems in the mid-band more noticeable, which is okay for a secondary monitor, but a dubious choice for a primary monitoring device. High mids and treble showed very good linearity in all environments. The last octave has about minus three decibel roll-off, which likely won't be heard. All in all, the tweeters did a good job of projecting a nice, reasonably wide sweet spot

 The room gain mostly takes care of the bass, so the plug-in only needs to tame it down a little, but for HS5 in treated rooms, bass boosting was needed. On higher SPLs, the forty-five watt amp could start running out of steam. Maybe some of the larger HS series speakers would do better in this regard, due to bigger woofers and more juice behind them. To conclude, we were very pleasantly surprised where Yamaha has gone with HS5

 The mid-heavy sound transformed to a much neutral tonality. Toggling the reference three plug-in on and off showed how much almost all instruments changed due to the one kilohertz peak. The bass hump was corrected back to neutral, which made bass guitars and synthetic bass much more clear. The unusually early bass roll-off on the HS5 might make these speakers harder to calibrate, especially in well-treated rooms

 1, 2014: I've been looking at the resonances of my room, and I think they may be sharp enough to explain my odd-sounding notes. I'm putting the rating back to 4 stars. (I'd put them up to 5 stars but I recently demoed some Adam A7X monitors that sound noticeably cleaner in the midrange, though their price is a lot higher). I'll edit this again when I've calmed some of my room resonances

 This is likely a speaker issue, because I also have a set of Grado Labs SR125 headphones (love 'em) that reproduces that C and its neighbors just fine. There are room resonances, of course, but I doubt they could account for this high-Q behavior. I can only attribute it to the speakers. Perhaps it's a crossover issue, don't know

 In any case, it's a shame that I would often rather play with headphones on than use these speakers, especially considering the price.  I was failing for so long. I mean, it was so bad. Some of my early recordings are so bad. But you're actually doing this for the listeners, and it's an important thing to keep in mind

 Respect your listeners. Make an effort to hear what's really happening in your mix. I was failing for so long. I mean, it was so bad

 Is there one instrument that's disappearing? Something that's standing out too much? All these things. It's your responsibility to try harder. And the real reason, ultimately, is because you want to show some respect to your listeners. Can we just stop and thank the listeners? They're always out there, just listening and listening and streaming

 So, it's helping you make the right decisions, because you need to know what's actually happening sonically, because what we're all trying to do, right, is to make the sound that's in your head into the sound that's coming out of the monitors. That's important to keep in mind. And that's why monitors are so crucial to literally any and every recording project. Back when we were still using those crusty old M-Audios, I thought I knew what I was doing

My current monitors are old shitty logitec speakers and it's about time for an upgrade. I have a budget of about €300.

I want to mount them on my wall (no space for a desk or more stands). I prefer active speakers because I don't really have enough space for an amp unless it fits in a 19"rack and it's less variables. I want flat monitors, altough I don't really mind a beefy low end. (I could always give the low end a boost on the mixer.)

What monitors should I buy?

 Prior to this it always sounded like the sound was coming from the upper left of my desk cabinet, whereas after adding the second sub the sound is more centered in the soundstage. The addition of the second sub did not drastically improve sound quality. Any improvement, if there is one, is slight.

 I do not feel that the crossover is great between the sub and the monitor frequencies.  The second sub I received has some slight alterations as it is a newer version purchased at a later date than the first. It also sounds different/responds to different frequencies as demonstrated by a frequency test I performed in Ableton, so be aware that not all HS8 subwoofers are the same.  Overall, I am glad I have two subs just to balance out the soundstage/directionality of the sound

Decent

- Yamaha HS5 honestly didn’t sound that great to my ears, kind of sparse and the low end was missing depth compared to the KRK. - Yamaha HS8 were amazing but I think my room is too small and untreated to cope with that size speaker. I think for now I’m going with the KRK.
