Best bang for the buck is probably used Zildjian New Beats - super versatile and they're very common so I often see them in my local used market (Boston area) for prices in the low $100s but I understand prices are inflated in Australia. Nevertheless, I'd save up and keep an eye out for a decent set of used hats like this than buy anything new for that cheap. They will serve you better than anything new at that price point.

Hihat buying help

I guess it all depends on your style but in my opinion, they cut way too much. Previous reviewer says he uses them in jazz scenarios, but I find that the Bliss line of high-hats are far superior for jazz, and for most other types of playing except for rock i guess. If these are supposed to be all purpose professional cymbals, why are they so loud and crispy. I personally like a more malleable metal sound

I want to purchase a pair of 14’’ hi hat cymbals and a crash. Mainly going to be playing as a hobby/ recording covers and just maybe a few small gigs. I’m playing after long and It’s my first bigger sized kit( Tama Rythm Mate). 
I really don’t want to purchase something that I’ll want to replace in a year. 
Also the second hand market for cymbals where I stay is pretty dead but now and then a few gems do pop up.
I was considering Meinl HCS/BCS, Zildjian planet Z, Paiste 101. However, I’ve seen a lot of mixed opinions about these; most people say they end up upgrading really quick from these cymbals.
Should I go ahead and buy one of these or be patient and invest in something better?

Budget Cymbals for Beginner( somewhere in between the beginner and intermediate stage)

In 1981 I received my first pair of New Beat 14s and was ecstatic. 40 years on I’ve bought them again, the originals I had to sell by the end of the 80’s when I moved. In between I’ve tried basically everything else; but these are the quintessential hi hat and always will be.  The secret to the New Beat sound is a combination of a low voice from the heavy bottom and a high whine coming off the bell of the top

My brother gave me his SPL kit before he left for college. Everything sounds great except for the hi hats. I have a Zildjian 16” crash, and a Meinl 20” ride. My hi hats are the SPL ones that came with the set along with a crash. What hi hats would sound good that are reasonably priced? My limit is 250

What’s are some good sounding reasonably priced hi-hats?

I switched from A Custom hi hats to these New Beats. They are very crispy and clear but not as "in your face" as the A Customs are. Very sizzly when played loose, which I love, and a solid chick when played closed. Very pleasant to the ears

I have been looking at the Paiste signature series, but they are a tad on the expensive side. I like the way they sound, though. Does anyone have experience with these or possibly recommend anything that is similar but cheaper?? Thanks for any advice.

What hi hats should I get?

I'm loving these hi-hats! Over the past month I've been using them for studio recording and both indoor and outdoor live shows . I have always played 14" hats, but I'm sold on the sounds I'm getting out of these 13's. I have them paired with the Zildjian Sweet Ride.  The three things about the New Beat Hi-Hats that are drawing me in are the crispness when closed, the rock/driving sound I get when slightly open, and the action when hit open then closed with the foot
