 A little clunky looking maybe, but all-in-all seemed like it fit the specifications I wanted.  I'll now cut to the chase. After brewing 4 different kinds of bean roasts (my own Italian plus 3 Starbucks), and trying both the Starbucks recipe (2 TB coffee for every 6 oz of water) and my son's (1/2 cup bean for 10-5oz. cups) the verdict is in

  First off, I wanted to make sure the temperature of the coffee was at or near the stated temperature of 200 degrees. I removed the coffee holder portion of the brewer and held a large glass measuring cup directly under where the water exits the heater. It was consistently 188 degrees. And yes, my thermometer was calibrated to boiling point at my altitude/pressure

 After a total of 10 brews all of them were below average and some were so bitter they were nearly undrinkable.  Time for a little testing..

Coffee from target ($30) because a week without coffee would be hell.  But it's there if you need it!  Some not so likable things: The coffee maker takes a while to brew a pot! By a while, I mean 10-15 minutes. While this may not seem like a long time, most brewing methods should not have the water in contact with the grounds for more than 6 minutes max. Although the brew time for this machine doesn't seem to affect taste too much. Most coffee comes out slightly more bitter than when I brew with my Chemex, but it is still pretty tasty

A good basic coffee make

 I doubt if there is any thermal carafe available on the market though that would do any better.  As for taste, the coffee both smelled and tasted better than the same coffee brewed in my Cuisinart. (The Cuisinart uses a cone filter - don't know if that made a difference)  The Zojirushi offers two brew cycles, fast and slow (regular and time saver). Using the regular (slower method) it did take longer and I was beginning to go into coffee withdrawal, so I am leaving mine on time save (faster method)

First Impressions

 This coffee maker does not have a BOLD setting, BUT it does make a VERY TASTY pot of coffee. To make up for no BOLD setting, I've had to use a little more coffee for each pot (Going from a 14 cup to 12 cup maker was already taken into account prior to these calculations).  A backlight to the display would have also been a welcomed addition to better see what burner setting I changed it to when I accidentally hit the 'Keep Warm" button a few times in quick succession instead of holding it when trying to turn the warmer back on.  The removable water tank is perfect size to easily fill up using Samsung Refrigerator in-door water supply, unlike my last removable water tank

Zojirushi EC YGC120 Coffee Maker, 12 Cup

  There is a large removable water tank on the side of the unit, which comes off and can be taken to the sink to be filled. This is a HUGE improvement over my previous model, which had no removable tank, and had to be pulled out from under the cabinets whenever I made coffee. It's got overfill holes only on one side of the water tank, so you can rest it on the side of the sink, and put the faucet over it, and fill it slowly, while you prepare the grinds, and if I don't get back from grinding the grounds fast enough, it will only spill over back into the sink.  The basket changed from a conical filter to a flat bottomed "Mr Coffee" style filter

 As I'd assumed that the conical ones were somehow better as they were a newer design, I was surprised that the coffee seemed even more flavorful when brewed through the flat-bottomed basket.  It ships with a metal screened permanent filter basket, which is great to have around for emergencies, but allows a bit too much fine particulate through for my liking, so I use paper filters normally to avoid sediment in my cup.  Finally, I need to mention the thermal carafe! The carafes on the Zojirushi coffee makers are far better than the other two thermal carafe coffee makers I'd had previously (Black and Decker, and Bonavita). It will hold the coffee at a good temperature for almost the whole day

I bought this to replace my Zojirushi EC-BD15, which I had purchased nearly 10 years ago (Bought Feb 2010- Died July 2019) . It had given me almost a decade of trouble-free, hot, delicious consistently perfect coffee.  Hopefully , I'll be able to pen as fond a review of my new EC-YTC100XB in 10 years, but so far, at 3 weeks into it, I'm in love.  Starting with the coffee maker itself, it brews right around the 200F mark, making for a perfectly brewed cup of coffee, flavorful, but not bitter from over-extraction
