The Zoom H2n brings a lot more to the table than a basic audio recorder. All of the buttons, dials, and switches are large, labeled well, and easy to use. Underneath the mesh screen, there are five microphones &mdash; two are positioned in an X/Y configuration, while the others are in a mid-side arrangement. The dial located on the top of the cover allows you to quickly select between the four recording modes, which range from mid-side stereo up to four channels. The H2n truly shines with an ability to record in surround sound. With the pair of X/Y microphones working in concert with the three mid-side microphones, this model doesn't just record audio coming from one side or the other. It actually differentiates between sounds coming from up, down, and all around you. In four-channel mode, it produces two individual tracks per recording meant to be routed to each side of a stereo system or each ear of a pair of headphones. If you have the equipment, software, and know-how, this model is fully capable of recording spatial audio to be used for fully-immersive VR videos. 
The complex capabilities of the Zoom H2n won't appeal to everyone. If you're looking for basic functions to record college lectures, meetings, or job interviews, you probably don't need four-channel spatial audio, surround-sound mode. The H2n still has the most basic digital voice recorder capabilities, but it might just be more recorder than you need or want to pay for. This model is also bulky and heavy &mdash; it is not meant to be slipped into a pocket or purse. The user interface is easy to use once you learn it, but it's far from modern. Compared to the newest, simplest, pocket-sized models, the H2n feels like a bit of a dinosaur. Complaints aside, the Zoom H2n is the way to go for recording 360-degree spatial audio for applications such as VR videos.

Phones Around $100 With Great Microphone

 This is basically a portable recording studio and a field recorder wrapped into one. It's better technology and fidelity than anything that was available in the finest recording studios in the world in the 1960's or 1970's and even 1980's. I guess I'm frustrated that Zoom would get this close, so close, to making the PERFECT field recorder, and then they'd blow it with such poor design and ergonomics. To use an analogy out of pop culture, the iPhone was not successful because of it's technology or features

 It has very little to grab onto (only a little serrated texture) and it's frustrating to try and rotate in dim lighting or without a good fingernail.  Overall, I hate to complain about such an amazing piece of technology. This is basically a portable recording studio and a field recorder wrapped into one. I've had my H5 in the box for months and finally took it out for some tests and WOW. Is it just me or the hiss is unbearable? I've tried multiple gain settings. Lower gain settings are quieter but boosting in post provides the same result as high gain.

What's a good step up from the H5? I've got a $1000 budget... my primary needs are for recording ambient and nature so getting the noise floor as low as possible is key. Preferably I want a recorder with attached mics to keep it simple.  What do you guys like and use?

Noisy Zoom H5 - Is there a better solution for a cleaner sound?

 Alright, so to start out this review, I want to make a quick note that in this review, I'm going to be including elements from the Zoom H2n Accessory Pack, and the reason is that without the accessory pack, the Zoom H2n isn't super useful. The H2n itself in the box only includes the H2n, an SD card, and a pair of batteries. Stuff that's pretty standard and essential, like a mic stand adapter, USB cable, windscreen, a case, are all included in the accessory pack, which is about $40 over the price of the H2n. So, because the accessory pack is basically required to use the H2n, we're going to be including that in the review, and also when you're purchasing, keep that in mind that you're probably going to need to purchase the accessory pack for most things

 I was hoping after 13 years, Zoom would have made some advancements along with the rest of technology. Alas, not so.  This Zoom H2n is a slight upgrade, primarily in terms of audio quality. This new version gets 24-bit 96khz audio when recording to an SD card, which is a welcome improvement, especially for musicians when those extra bits and sampling rates are most obvious

The design hasn't changed all that much. It's slightly larger and rounder, which I don't really like, but it does at least have a flat base so you can set it down without it tipping over, which the older H2 had a harder time with

 So if you're just looking for a microphone to put on your desk and improve the sound of the microphone, that's a good option. It does improve the audio for videos but you're not going to want to hold this up to your face every single time you record a YouTube video. So the eighth inch might actually be a good option because you could plug a little lavalier mic in there, like 20 bucks on Amazon. So that's a good option to actually improve the quality of your videos if you're doing a video podcast

) One last thing of note: for best recording quality, don't hand-hold the H2N, or put it on a surface where it will pick up noise (e.g. the table holding your band's beer, or a wood floor); use a mic stand or tripod to isolate the recorder from stray vibrations.  If you're not looking for an ultra-portable unit, the H2N is probably the single most versatile unit on the market, and one of the strongest contenders for audio quality as well

 I was fine with the H2's slide-out plastic cover and find the rubberized cover annoying to work around. As with most reviewers, I find the extra purchase price for the accessory pack aggravating (and since I already own an H2, mostly pointless - I purchased a USA Gear carrying case, have a spare Gorilla pod, and will use the wind screen and "microphone handle" mount from my H2 when needed.) One last thing of note: for best recording quality, don't hand-hold the H2N, or put it on a surface where it will pick up noise (e.g
