Apple HomePod mini vs Sonos One

I've had sporadic success getting the lock to pair by instead adding it through the Home app and *then* viewing its HomeKit settings in the August app. When I'm able to get this far, the lock state seems to be successfully communicated to the Home app (sends notifications when locking, unlocking, etc).

But this isn't a speaker, it's a smart device. It actually isn't very smart. Here's a couple of examples that have recurred often enough that the product is only half useful to me, and therefore feels like a dumb investment that I regret: - I can play SiriusXM content (sometimes, see below) from the Sonos app on my phone. But the Sonos doesn't recognize my Sirius subscription when I use voice commands, and suggests that I link an account

The speaker is their ‘One’ branded line. A single speaker, which in my mind would play mono and sound about as good as any mid-priced Bluetooth speaker could. Mind you, this speaker is about two feet off the floor, on a built-in bookshelf about 2” from two walls in the corner of the room. I downloaded the Sonos App, quickly connected to the speaker, selected Spotify and played some “Favorite Things” by John Coltrane

The rate of issues also seems to be affected by how many you have on your network. One or two, and you might not have many issues. More, and the odds seem to shift considerably. This product has (in my opinion) a hardware or software (or both) issue that causes the speakers to drop out periodically without explanation, occasionally flat out refuse to join a network, or go dead to commands for random periods of time

Alarms are great for triggering routines when they go off. I have one here that when my alarm goes off in the morning, it turns on my coffee machine, ...

The connection is solid and is a lot more convenient than traditional speaker set ups. As for my use, I have traditional speakers (which will always sound better than these speakers because physics), and I mainly use these smart speakers in different rooms as smart speakers. I want quick connections and seamless reliability. The Sonos is not great at either but just ok with both, especially in 2020

It produces a more punchy bass to me than the HomePod Mini. Now, when turned up to max volume, the HomePod Mini doesn't seem to produce any distortion...

But their range and power is more than enough at least for a multi-unit dwelling. For example, if the neighbors are home I can't turn these above 50% max volume for more than a couple of minutes (15% after bedtime) without getting a door knock. The bass, in particular, is Bo0m and there is no need for the extra "loudness" toggle in the app. Speaking of the (mobile) app, it's okay

11n Wi-Fi. Of course, the speaker also works with Apple AirPlay 2, so you can stream directly from Apple devices. There’s no physical connectivity here, however, like an aux input.

My connection is wireless but it is within 15 feet of my router so it isn't a distance issue. The connection and Alexa issues are frustrating because this is an excellent speaker. I hope Sonos is working on a firmware or software update to address this glaring issue.

The only thing I dislike is the price, however it is an apple product and you are also getting a really good quality device and speaker so take of it what you will.

Sonos have a great reputation for sound but given the cost of their equipment, in this day and age consumers have the right to expect something fairly close to 'plug and play'. if there App worked as suggested you'd have that experience but at least in my house it does not. If you buy and it works great - I'm happy for you but I'm now very reluctant to buy another Sonos product. Maybe in a year or two they will have ironed these problems out but for now I'll have to go elsewhere :-(

It's small. It's unobtrusive: this is how a mini speaker should be so then the reason people are buying these cheaper, smaller smart speakers is just ...

Sonos one, I have to have the Roam on double the volume of a One in the next room to have the sound the same volume. It also lacks any noticeable bass really but considering it’s size, I’m not surprised by this.

The only issue I have is the max volume. I feel like it lacks a little bit in that department. But on the plus side, max volume does not sound distorted at all.

I had a stereo pair of Sonos Ones (Gen2) which I eventually returned, and found the sound to be bright and harsh, especially with volume levels 40% upwards. Trueplay tuning made things worse no matter how many times I repeated the process. I could lower the treble in the EQ but it did not seem to take away the harshness ('s' sounds and electric guitar sounds). It really makes for an uncomfortable listening experience unless volume is kept at 'background listening' level
