 Is this bag just cinches down into a much smaller footprint, because there's a lot of bags out there? It'S a 40 60 liter pack, whatever it is, you might only have 15 or 20 liters in the bag or maybe only you're, only using a quarter of its carry capacity, but the footprint of the bag or main is the same so that be able to have A pack that can really kind of switch squish down into a smaller footprint to me is everything, that's a very, very good quality, so just to jump right into it. Of course, this is the the yellow version. This is the also the tall version it comes in a regular size and I'm 6 foot 2, so that the tall version works perfect for me and just right on the outside, you have these straps up here, so you can strap really any additional items. You would like to it there's also a pocket whoops right here on the front

 Alice is a great job with the the comfortable comfort ability of their harness system and their waist belt, and you might be noticing something no words the waist belt with this. What'S what is fantastic Atlas gives you the option that you can take it on or off. It'S up to you and they make great West waist belts very meaty. There'S a lot of material here, a lot of a lot of substance and durability, so they're very good at the waist belts

 I just want to talk about this real quick on the the back panel. It'S kind of got like a rib design and it is very comfortable and it's got like kind of exaggerated lumbar area right here, which makes carrying this bag very comfortable and in the waist belt, actually tucks right back in here. Let me actually show you on the other bag, so they sent me to. This is a athlete pack and black, but what's different is this one is the regular version

Here goes all the way to the bottom: a couple zipper pockets here you could put SD cards or batteries or remote shutters or whatever you like there and that's the the camera compartment.  It'S not like the foam that you would use for your backpack uh straps, it's like a very thick foam, and so they they sent me these, and i actually was able to do the install myself to upgrade this original backpack to be capable of handling a lot More weight and to just improve the frame and that's cool, i think it's important to reuse. You know products like this and to turn them into more functional, updated products when we can so we don't just throw out perfectly viable and useful backpacks and other type of hiking this one.  If you want stuff that needs to stay absolutely dry, this is a well protected area for your important documents and things like that. This bag has been incredibly comfortable.  It opens on the back and you get full access to the whole bag here in the back, and it has a little special feature called the origami compartment here, which basically allows you to turn some storage space into camera space or, like I said, storage space, and You have more volume for other stuff in the back. It'S it's very shallow, I'm an Olympus ambassador and I shoot with Olympus glass, of course, which is small lenses and they fit in perfectly. But if you have slightly bigger lenses, you'll end up putting them in sideways. Like this, I know that for future versions of this backpack there will be it'll, be slightly deeper and then normal full-frame lenses will also fit in upright or the general full frame lens will fit in upright

 They're not just smaller and larger versions of the exact same pack. There are some differences. this one has a laptop compartment on the front. This one has it inside

 They both feature this top flap drawstring top system and then they both have space down in front of the box that actually holds the camera gear and so with compression straps on the sides. Again, this is true for both models. You can stuff the pack as full as you need to and then cinch them down, throw a tripod on the side, and and make it work.  just like any other outdoor pack you'd expect. They have the same suspension system for the shoulder harnesses here which is great. They both feature internal metal frames which again standard for hiking packs to help distribute the load of the pack down onto your hips rather than on your shoulders. They have or this one has an adjustable velcro thing for adjusting depending on your your torso height which is great can you get a good fit

I carry a MLC 45 for all my travel. It works great. I've never had an issue with not being able to take it on a plane and I can fit it in the overhead bin on a CRJ 200. It can carry a ton and its comfortable

Does anyone have any experience with these Patagonia MLC bags? I'm looking to travel around Europe with them and I'd like to travel carry-on only.

My plan is to carry a 15L backpack as a personal item and one of these MLC bags; I'm just wondering if anyone has any real-life experience with these and how well they travel carry-on only. 

Are they consistently accepted as carry on's? Are they actually too large even though they're designed for carry on travel? Are there better options than these bags for carrying a duffel-style bag and a small backpack for daily use?

 From those larger heavier or sharper items, we do have a nice ridged foam back panel for some extra cushion and support, and it's kind of reduced in the middle to create that anvil airway channel to really promote airflow and breathability. So your back doesn't get too sweaty during your next trip. We do have some really soft shoulder straps here with nice air mesh so that it's really breathable. It really creates a nice airflow in the shoulders and it's got softer edges so that reduces chafing among the neck and shoulders

It'S not heavily structured, but it is enough to help transfer that load down to the hips

 So you can see I've got my water bottle in here now. Really nice and big pocket easy to store. Some other gear there as well, if you need to - and we do have an over/under compression, strap system so right now down at this buckle here you can see I've got the compression strap routed under, but you can undo that and route it over the top to Cinch down whatever is in that pocket, so really versatile system there. I like that over/under compression on the front of the pack

Mountainsmith Mayhem 35 Backpack

The shoulder straps, hip belt and back panels are comfortable and reasonably breathable. I tested it on a hot, humid day, and I didn’t notice too much sweat build-up under the pack.

In a broad stroke, I’d say they are good mid-level packs, nicely made, that would be perfect for rolling around Central America in a bumpy bus.

 It seems people over 5’8 will want to choose the 45, and 5’8 and under will do better with the 35. If possible, head to a shop to try sizing if you are, like me, on the cusp between the two.

I tested the Mayhem 35 and 45 packs on a recent overnight trip with the company. It was a quick test — a 4-mile uphill hike in Golden, Colo. — but gave me a good initial feel for how these 2016 backpacks will perform in the long run.
