I'm not a huge ultralight backpacker. I just use a small Bialetti Moka Express pot. Pretty simple to use, easy to clean, and basically idiotproof.

Currently I have a GSI Coffee Rocket. It's a lightweight percolator made specifically for backpacking.

Pros -It's lightweight and compact, allows for any size cup. 
Cons -It can spill over very easy if you're not careful, and is difficult to clean if you need to conserve water.

Coffee Addicts! What is your setup?

Now it’s a piece of decoration, because i won’t be using it again, doesn’t seem worth it.

So I finally gave the Moka Pot a shot after someone said that a Moka Pot with Bustelo will make ANY coffee taste like swill water.

I bought a Moka Pot and a packet of Bustelo and brewed a cup for my dad as he like dark coffee. The first brew came out ok. I tasted it and it was fine. Nothing to write home about but it was good. I used James Hoffmann's recommended method.

Second brew came out darker. I had to add condensed milk and sugar to be able to down the thing. But it was good. 

I could definitely see why someone would like this type of coffee. Its good. It's better than the burn starbucks stuff. But damn, It's way over hyped.

I am excited to try it with some ice. Its perfect for iced drinks.

The biggest weakness of the Mokapot is how finicky it is. I feel like its a nightmare to clean and doesnt instill confidence when brewing. 

I think a fellow prismo with a dark roasted bean would yeald a much better result and be more controllable.

The Moka Pot Hype Disappointment

  Melting handles: Use on a small burner/small flame on a little over medium heat. High heat on a larger burner will obviously damage these things, it's just common sense. Nothing made of plastic and connected to metal is meant to sit over high heat for long periods of time.  People have also complained about leaking in the center which I have thankfully not experienced

  If you keep all this in mind you'll get great tasting coffee out of this cool appliance. Care for it and follow the directions and it will care for you.

 Ignore the nonsense about "seasoning" the pot with coffee oils unless you like the taste of old, stale coffee. Great espresso like coffee without expensive and complicated machines.

My Encore is great for anything from French Press, V60, even Moka Pot. I get some fines surely, but the taste in the V60 is consistently good IMO. The adjustments aren’t precise enough for espresso but I’ve been very pleased with it for V60

New to pour over, picked up some cheap beginner's hand grinder (Hero S01) and a V60, couldn't figure out why my coffee always tasted bitter even though they're fresh light roasted beans (allowed to de-gas for 7 days) and I grind them coarse. Went through 2 bags of beans, tried every grind size, pouring technique, etc, and was gonna give up, but then I picked up a sifter intending to give it one last shot. I weighed out 18 grams of beans, grounded them and then used the sifter to sift out the fines. Was expecting a bit of fines, but when I looked, there was like a heaping teaspoon of it, 1.9 grams to be exact.

So I brewed up the 16.1 grams of coffee at a 1:16.5 ratio, then bam! Super delicious coffee, most of the unpleasant bitterness was gone. Repeated the process with another bag of beans, same thing happened.

I'm now in the process of hunting down a reasonably priced electric grinder (DF64 maybe?) and am gonna toss the Hero S01 or maybe use it as a pepper grinder. Won't even use it as a travel grinder because I would have to bring a sifter with me. 

TL;DR: don't cheap out on your grinder even if it's your first pour over grinder. If you really can't buy a better grinder, you should at least buy a sifter while you save up. Yes, you may waste some coffee sifting out the fines, but it's a game changer.

I've worked out why my pour over tasted like crap.

 Make sure the flame is just perfect & the coffee doesn't come up strong or way to slow--better slow than fast, but with experience, you'll get the hang of it.

 I suppose the French Roast is just as good an idea. You can search for the vacuum packed coffee that is made IN ITALY, but why go thru all that trouble when our American coffee will do just fine? I am more than happy with Folgers & the grind is just fine! I would suggest using filtered water! We once got espresso coffee in a can that was made by Italian-Americans & we took it back to the grocery store for a refund because it was burned black! That is NOT how they do coffee in Italy!!! To play it safe, just get your regular Folgers or whatever--OK French roast, OK also Colombian medium-darker roast, just don't get the coffee burned black! YIKES!!! Once you have done your first coffee, you just rinse & dry. You only have to wash it once in a great while when the coffee stains increase on the inside of the top serving portion. Save yourself the problems of filters, & expensive coffee makers

 Bialetti Moka Express 3 cup serves 3 cups of espresso, but to be perfectly fair, it does make one perfect cup of coffee for one person--a smaller cup--not the mug-size amount. In Italy you can get ground coffee just for these makers & it should be pressed in. I live in USA now & I use regular Folgers coffee you can get at any grocery store. I don't press the coffee in--just enough to give me a kick but not enough to send me to the ER

) PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU DON'T PUT IT ON HIGH FLAME OR HIGH HEAT. Low-Medium is perfect on electric. If it is too low, it won't work (electric stove) & medium heat is too high. Very low flame on a gas stove is perfect

GREAT COFFEE MAKER

 When you first get your pot just run a couple pots through of any generic coffee - don't' wash the pot! This allows it to get cleaned via boiling coffee and "seasons" the pot. Never wash the inside of the pot, seasoning helps to obtain the best possible cup.  Brew - When you are ready to make your first pot fill the water to the line, which is just below the pressure purge valve. Bottled or filtered water is best

 Seeing them in "mart" stores they were always overpriced, but the price here on Amazon was perfect. I was also able to get a genuine Italian one and not some outsourced version. After doing some reading, genuine Bialetti is made in Italy.

 The gasket is the biggest bonus, as most gaskets don't last over two years and finding an exact match for a generic pot was impossible.  Coffee - I find Lavazza, Bustello and La Llave to be good in these pots. When you first get your pot just run a couple pots through of any generic coffee - don't' wash the pot! This allows it to get cleaned via boiling coffee and "seasons" the pot. Never wash the inside of the pot, seasoning helps to obtain the best possible cup

 Do not tamp the grounds as you would do in an espresso machine!!! Drop the basket into the base, screw the top on until it's a bit over snug, then place on heat. I brew mine on the lowest heat possible, it will eventually boil due to the confined environment and I don't have to worry about a poor cup. If you heat it with high heat, the water will boil too fast and cause a rush through the grounds leading to a weaker cup or a "burnt" taste as the water was too hot. Moka pots take time to brew, but well worth the wait

Don't bother with a generic, spend the extra few dollars

 They said the following:  "I'm not sure why this would happen unless you have the heat too high. On the pots, only have the heat just under the base of the pot even for the small ones, so it would be low heat. If you have an electric range put on the smallest burner on med and pull the pot to one side so the handle isn't over heat. That may also be what you are smelling if the handle comes in contact with heat

..and the water still wasn't even close to hot enough after over a half hour. I emailed Bialetti to ask if perhaps the gasket was simply defective and what I might be doing wrong

 I have discovered after moving all the way down to low, where after 30 minutes the water still isn't even close to hot enough, and moving back up the dial, that 4 is the sweet spot on my stove. It still takes a while to get up to temp, but it doesn't smell. Also, as other reviewers have stated, the light coating of oil from the coffee that develops probably helps as well--if nothing else, it will create a protective layer over the rubber and such, which should prevent any residual rubber stench from leaching into the coffee. The last couple batches have seemed fine

 The one single downside to it is that you have to make 3 cups worth each time (about 1 person's worth of espresso drinks), so if you ever want to make less or more, you will need multiple sized pots (I have a 6-cup model too). Do not get a knock-off, trust me. I have had friends and family make this mistake. This pot is very cheap already, so a knock-off won't save you a whole lot of money

 I go for medium heat on this thing, and then cool it off with a cold bar towel once it's done to prevent the more bitter parts from coming through. It's kind of a finicky thing, and coffee is already an organic and changing product, so it can be tricky to get a good method down with this thing, but I've definitely pulled some coffee out of this that tasted great--not espresso quality, but better than I've had off a Nuova Simonelli with a mediocre barista. The right beans can make a world of difference. I typically use Stumptown or Cafe Vita, but even among Stumptown I've found certain beans to respond better than others

 Because 99% of the time, the drinks people are ordering from these places have a shot or two of espresso. I was able to mimic my favoriate Scooters drink. But I wasn't sure at first if my espresso was tasting right just plain. After comparing, I know what I make at home is right
