I'd go for a cafelat Robot and Breville milk frother. It's a super convenient setup, you can froth while you pull shots. Plus the robot will be fun to have even if you buy a nice dual boiler down the road.

Just looking for a temporary option for primarily milk based drinks. Later in the fall i plan on getting a high end machine but I'm thinking of picking up something on the used market to hold me over the next 6 months and then plan to resell. 

Specifically for milk based drinks, thoughts on my best option? No need for large lattes or more than 2 cappuccinos in a row.

Having owned this machine for a while I feel like I can offer a detailed review. As an avid coffee connoisseur, I procure green beans from reliable sources and roast to my specifications. For comparison I own over 40 brewing apparatuses.  Asthetic design: very nice

Interesting concept with some drawbacks.

 Flair sells an accessory pressure gauge/piston from their company website, and IMO this is absolutely critical to using the machine effectively. Without the pressure gauge you will find yourself constantly guessing how much force to use and when, and to be frank there's enough guesswork and trial and error involved in using this thing without all that. These three things make the Flair considerably more user-friendly.  Once you've done that, prepare to set aside a half hour or more each time you buy a new bag of coffee to dial in the grind size, tamping pressure, and water temperature particular to your new beans

I bought this because I like manual gadgets and espresso, and I thought that I'd end up saving money by making espresso at home instead of buying one each morning. The Flair was especially appealing to me among manual espresso presses because I don't have much counter space in my kitchen and I travel long stretches for work, so the portability was a major draw.  I'll admit, I didn't quite know what I was getting into with this thing. Beginners luck gave me two great shots of espresso on my first two attempts, but after that I fell into a spiral of pure frustration as shot after shot after shot came back too watery/fast, or just didn't come at all as the lever repeatedly choked up on me

 Your grinder will probably cost more than the Flair, which will set the cost-effectiveness of your new home-brewing system even further back, but you'll need it if you ever want to get to the point of pulling good, reliable shots. You might get away with a stovetop kettle and thermometer, but I'd rather not be messing around with those things while making sure that all the other components that go into prepping shots are in order.  I have found that I can hold the unit with my left on the counter ring while I press down the lever. If the grind is too fine it is really rough to push the lever down so find the sweet spot in your grind that gives you the creme and yet does not take a Cross-Fit workout to get your espresso. If you are new to this like me don't try and pack the Portifilter, I think that is what it is called, compressed to the top. Half to a third works great

I have never had a manual Espresso maker so I did not know what to expect. Pros: Brain dead easy if you read the instructions and get your grind down. Price, quality of construction. (It is all metal so you would have to really crank on it to harm it

Considering your wants and preground coffee, I'd advise against the Flair. The Flair seems to work well with coffee ground for espresso and preground coffee will not provide that. Coming from instant espresso, I'm an absolute beginner when it comes to coffee and I'm now on the fence between the moka pot and the Flair neo with a tight budget of HKD1000 (\~150USD). I personally enjoy milk drinks and tbh I dont have the highest standard for coffee, as I'm fine with the ones from starbucks. My concerns for the coffee maker are ease of use, consistency, quickness, ease of cleaning up, and small size, with the former ones being more important, and of course, producing lattes with a quality higher than, or at least on par with those from starbucks. (sorry if I'm asking for too much in this price range)

However, I have literally no extra equipment like grinder or kitchen scale, besides an electric kettle, and I plan to get my pre-ground espresso coffee (illy?) from supermarkets. 

So, between the above two, which of them would you recommend more to me? Feel free to leave suggestions other than the two of my options if you think they suit me more. Thanks in advance!

Moka pot vs Flair neo for milk drinks?

After unboxing and setting up the unit, there's no denying this is a great looking piece of hardware. The metal components have a nice heft, and the black frame/copper base definitely invoke the coffee theme.  Upon using it, I noticed the portafilters required a little bit of force to click into the base and sit level. This didn't seem intentional, but more like a tolerance issue, because one portafilter exhibited the issue more than the other, and both exhibited the issue to varying degrees depending on how they were rotated

 The result is excellent espresso, and on the first day, better lattes than anything I've made with the Aeropress. While the unit is technically portable, I'll continue to use my Aeropress for coffee on the go, but I enjoy being able to make real espresso at home with a device that's very affordable, and one that should be extremely low maintenance in the long run (other than O-rings wearing over time, it doesn't seem like much can go wrong, due to the simplicity of design).  From a design standpoint, it's very good, but there are a few minor things that could be better. The base can wobble a bit if there's any horizontal forces applied, which I think has less to do with the oval base, and more to do with the tripod layout of the rubber bumpers on the bottom

The instructions show how you can use the plastic tamper to force the piston up and out, but the metal tamper doesn't seem like it should be used for this role, so at this point the plastic tamper is just one more thing on the counter

So my flair signature came today. My overall impressions.. starting with the most important, does it make espresso? Yes

 If anyone is considering the flair for a portable solution, I can definitely recommend that you do so. However, I would splurge the extra dollars for a signature or Pro series as you get the pressure gauge which I think is critical.

Does what it's supposed to

 With the ability to control temperature and pressure, you can easily customize the taste of your espresso to how you like it.  I am brand new to espresso making, so I had to hunt for the right grind size to use (which is typical for any espresso machine). Once you find the grind size that gets you the right amount of pressure; the taste, mouthfeel, and crema production of the shots are very similar to what you will find in coffee shops produced by equipment that costs thousands of dollars. The only requirements you need at home are the Flair, a good quality burr grinder, fresh coffee, water, and a heat source

 However, these are also benefits, since they give you more control than you could affordably find in a typical espresso machine. The only other con is durability of the plastic, since I'm surprised at how quickly I gouged a part, but that is also my fault for being clumsy.  Overall, I'm very happy with the Flair. I'm able to produce quality espresso after only a few days with it

 You have to let expensive espresso machines heat up for half an hour to get a good temperature (but can still have little control over the precise temperature). But with the Flair, you can heat the parts up in minutes and easily control the temperature. The process takes about 5 minutes, including setup, hand grinding, heating up parts and water. Cleanup is quick and simple

 For this first week of ownership, I actually traveled with it and made espresso very easily while I was away from home—you can't do that with a typical espresso machine.  The Flair is very impressive for how simple the design is and for what it can produce for such a low price. The biggest challenge is getting a good brew temperature, which is vitally important for lighter roasts but not so much for darker roasts. Temperature management for light roasts is easy enough to achieve, and should be easier with the stainless steel piston option and through the use of dry heat on the metal parts

 I used too much force to press down the lever with too fine ground coffee, and the round metal piece that was sitting on the top of piston withstanding all the force from the lever popped out of its place, and the lever broke the top part of piston. It was partially my fault using too much force, but I still think that something should not break with a force that a person can possibly put on. A stainless steel piston would make this machine almost perfect although the price will go up. I wouldn't mind paying extra for a stainless steel piston if available

 Preheating chamber and portafilter with hot water is time consuming and water consuming, and I have to keep watching a thermometer all because I care about quality of each shot. I am tired of controlling all variables. Flair has potential to brew high quality of espresso if you set up routines and you are skilled and if you don't mind spending extra time and energy for precise preheating. Consistent espresso shots can only be reached when you put lots of your energy and focus in it
