Wait, what? No, it didn't drop below the safety temperature, at which point it would automatically kick on. I also adjust the temperature before going to bed. Shouldn't have to if this thing is smart right? Well, better safe than sweaty. To get around some of these issues I've adjusted the schedule

It always just works. HomeKit automation and granular control is awesome with everything, even Google assistant never says anything like “Looks like kitchen light isn’t available right now.” It did that all the time with the C by GE stuff. So… after all that I brought a few old bulbs to work just to play around with (they have no resale value so why not)

Assuming you have that bit covered, I would recommend 2 Ecobee 3 Lites as a minimum. You could go for a more expensive model - if you wanted Alexa, for example - but you don’t NEED to.

Lame. Google is stating support for 5 years after launch. So could drop support for the 3rd Gen Nest Learning Thermostat at any time since it came out in 2015.

The other big change was the Ecobee remote sensor. The New Remote Sensor is more streamlined , it’s beautifully designed, a touch smaller and has a very cool magnetic mount. The new sensor also has a better field of view, can work further away then older sensors and has optimal motion sensing which gives it enhanced wide-angle detection and a battery life of five years. I was also able to use to my older Ecobee Remote sensors on the New Ecobee Smart Thermostat which was a huge plus since I own 6 of them

It does about 90% of what I want and expect. I did turn off the auto-movement sensing, a feature which turns on the display when the Nest senses movement, such as when you walk by. The problem was that it was turning on in the middle of the night when I went to the bathroom and lighting up the bedroom. You can turn off auto-movement and instead activate it by a momentary push, but in the push mode, it doesn't appear that you can customize what is displayed, such as the current temp, the programmed temp, or a short weather analysis

Finding our "sweet spot" for the temperature range took a few days because we were used to the numbers on the old thermostat, but now we're sleeping great at night and no longer waking up sweaty and hot and, since I'm working from home during the day, it's comfortable all day long without having to run back and forth to adjust the temperature. I simply put the SmartSensor in my office - which is also the warmest room in the house due to the register and furniture placement - and it keeps everything balanced out nicely. Getting Alexa connected to it was a bit tricky - it took a few tries, but she's up and going now. Alexa actually responds better to our commands through the Ecobee than she did on the Echo dot that sat closer to us on the kitchen counter, so I moved that Echo dot to another room

So if I leave at 7am, and come home at 5 pm, I want the temperature a comfy 75-76 degrees in my home. The interim? Don't care, which is what I hoped the Nest would work on for me. Ideally, When I leave at 7 or so, it would start to dial back the AC/heat to a decent level, let's say the low 80s, so I could save money, then when it knows I'll be home around 5, it aims for heating/cooling the house back down to an acceptable level for me for when I walk in the door. This thing should be working at my house when I'm away to save me money by not heating or cooling an empty house for a few hours while I'm away, then kicking back on 30/60 minutes or so before I arrive so I walk in to a comfy house
