Poor user interface and programming mode. Settings function is way too limited with no ability to program for a single 7-day week. Took quite a while to get used to programming the time and temperature--which had to be done for three periods (weekdays, Saturday and Sunday). For those who are retired, work at home or disabled, this is not recommended

 It connected fine before. I did not modify the network and none of the other dozen smart devices have had any issues connecting. I have a dedicated 2.4GHz network

 Wait, what? No, it didn't drop below the safety temperature, at which point it would automatically kick on. I also adjust the temperature before going to bed. Shouldn't have to if this thing is smart right? Well, better safe than sweaty.  To get around some of these issues I've adjusted the schedule

 The thermostat should be smart enough to stay on if I manually set the temperature using the app less than 15m ago.  I've woken up in a sweat twice because the thermostat decided to turn on the heat in the middle of the night. Wait, what? No, it didn't drop below the safety temperature, at which point it would automatically kick on. I also adjust the temperature before going to bed

 Here's where the dealbreaker comes in. After using this for about a month, it randomly decided to disconnect itself from the network. Annoying but ok, I'll just add it back right? WRONG. When I first installed it, I was able to connect it by leveraging the settings from the already connected Nest Protect units

This cannot be a top rated thermostat. I'm baffled.

Lame.  Google is stating support for 5 years after launch.   So could drop support for the 3rd Gen Nest Learning Thermostat at any time since it came out in 2015.

 This is a significant issue if you've been away for an extended period, as your house might actually be quite warm/cold when you arrive, but the Nest won't fire up until it "sees" you, meaning you don't walk into a comfy house, you walk into your threshold temperature and have to wait for the Nest to catch up. The motion sensor is also a big issue if you have an older home like mine, and the thermostat is tucked away at the end of a hall, instead of by the front door. Might be a non-issue to some, but be warned if your thermostat is in an out of the way location.  There IS an "early on" feature which lets you set a temperature and time ("I want it to be 75 degrees at 4:30pm"), and let it start heating or cooling your home a bit before that time depending on the ambient temperature

 So if I leave at 7am, and come home at 5 pm, I want the temperature a comfy 75-76 degrees in my home. The interim? Don't care, which is what I hoped the Nest would work on for me. Ideally, When I leave at 7 or so, it would start to dial back the AC/heat to a decent level, let's say the low 80s, so I could save money, then when it knows I'll be home around 5, it aims for heating/cooling the house back down to an acceptable level for me for when I walk in the door. This thing should be working at my house when I'm away to save me money by not heating or cooling an empty house for a few hours while I'm away, then kicking back on 30/60 minutes or so before I arrive so I walk in to a comfy house

Doesn't quiiiite do what you'd expect

 It does about 90% of what I want and expect. I did turn off the auto-movement sensing, a feature which turns on the display when the Nest senses movement, such as when you walk by. The problem was that it was turning on in the middle of the night when I went to the bathroom and lighting up the bedroom. You can turn off auto-movement and instead activate it by a momentary push, but in the push mode, it doesn't appear that you can customize what is displayed, such as the current temp, the programmed temp, or a short weather analysis

 It's not the perfect way to control temperature throughout my house, since the master bedroom where the Nest is located will be over-cooled, but it's only a few degrees difference.

 I programmed the Nest to use the remote sensor in my son's room in the morning when his room heats up due to its south-eastern exposure. Now his room is comfortable in the morning. We wanted to add something to look nice in the house as well as be easy to control while we’re gone for our animals as well as cost savings and so far it has been great.  Install was easy and simple and no issues so far as far as we know!
