We also appreciate the generous storage layout for shuttling multi-day loads, including nine exterior pockets, U-shaped front access to the main compartment, and massive hipbelt pockets (made even larger in the latest update) that easily swallow a large smartphone.

We recently tested the revamped Baltoro 75 while trekking in Patagonia, and the pack stayed true to its intentions as one of the most comfortable and feature-rich designs on the market. Along with the changes outlined above, the new version also includes a highly customizable hipbelt and shoulder straps (great for achieving a perfect fit), drops the built-in Sidekick daypack (not a big loss, in our eyes), and uses more recycled materials. But as before, the Baltoro’s biggest downside is its weight: The 75-liter model clocks in around 5 pounds, which is about twice the heft of the 70-liter Hyperlite Southwest mentioned above. In short, if you aim to keep things light and simple on a backpacking trip, this probably isn’t the pack for you.  [Music] [Music] Okay, so I've gotten a chance to get some walking in with this, get some miles in and uh, there's a few things that I really like right off the bat. I really like where this actually sits on me and I like how easy it is to adjust this sternum strap. Sometimes backpacks have really difficult to adjust sternum straps. I also really like this sunglasses holder right here

 Here On the bottom, giving the sleeping bag compartment dedicated access point. To me, that's just a no-brainer I really like having the ability to immediately get at my sleeping bag through a bottom sort of access point. Now, there is a curved zipper here. curved zippers can tend to fail after, say, years of stress, but uh, at the same time it's It's not why I wouldn't I wouldn't buy a backpack over that

 so I have some thoughts. so let's get a little more casual here and take the pack off. And uh, let's break it down. Oh, you just love hiking

Five Great Things, One Awkward Thing: The Revamped Gregory Baltoro 65L Review

 Having a modular system to swap out different types of pockets/phone holders, etc, would be fantastic.  I personally had trouble getting a water bottle in/out of the special side pocket designed for it, but it didn't seem to be a problem for other people, but maybe my arm just doesn't bend that much backward.  However, that being said, it is a damn fine backpack, very comfortable loaded with 65lbs of gear, really easy to adjust so I could periodically shift weight to and from my hips to just give different muscles a break as needed.  This thing is built on a seriously sturdy platform and is excellent for long haul backpackers or expeditions with the focus on fit but not compromising on other features.  The silicone grip overlay prevents slippage, so the pack stays in place throughout those long hikes. Some quick additional features that can be found on this backside include - hip belt pockets, one of them being a water-resistant weather shield pocket with a YKK aqua guard zipper which is perfect for a phone or a GPS device. The other pocket is mesh and it's great for snacks. There's also a sunglass quick stow system on the shoulder harness so you can access your shades without taking the pack off

 The pre-curved construction of those parts will help to eliminate chafing and hot spots. Even more, you can adjust the torso length slightly by moving the shoulder straps between the two slotted options on the frame With the Baltoro, you can even completely remove the shoulder harness and the hip belt to swap for different sizing, giving you a truly customized pack fit. Continuing with the back panel, the entire padded portion is called the matrix ventilated back panel. The foam itself is structural and is fully wrapped in a breathable mesh

 It's a tubular aluminum frame that defines the whole perimeter of the pack itself. This is going to help drive the weight down to your hips and help keep the pack close to your back so there's less of a fatiguing factor throughout your hike. It also has an anti barreling stay which is going to allow the frame to hold its shape under heavier loads, Again, enhancing the comfort. What really beefs up the comfort and the performance of this pack is how the shoulder straps and hip belt work

Hip pockets are great idea but too small for a cell phone (which is what most people would like to do with it). Would prefer separate pocket for sleeping bag, not just tiny removable flap

Let’s take a closer look at what has garnered

I am going to take the pack off and show you
its innovative response A3 suspension sys-tem.

A3 stands for the automatic angle adjust features.

The chassis here consists of two independently
rotating shoulder straps that make up the

harness and two independently moving hip belt
fins.

That type of design really enables the pack
to move with you while you are on the go so

that fit, that stability, that balance of
the load is constant and con-sistent.

The shoulder strap and the hip belt fins can
be swapped out.

Gregory makes these com-ponents available
in a number of different sizes so that users

of various sizes are getting that same customizable
fit.

There are measurements available from Gregory
to let you know exactly which size is appropriate

The structure, that load hauling capability
of the Baltoro is granted by a 70, 75 series

Very stream lined, maintains a very low weigh.

The Baltoro checks in at just over five pounds
and it is cut away in such a manner that it

is saving on weight, but it is certainly maintaining
rigidity and stability for heavy loads.

In addition to that there is a frame sheet
behind here that further enhances that structure.

You don’t feel that on your back because
there is excellent padding in play here at

There is channeling and some gapping here
on the foam and the panel itself to let air

Whether you are out on the trail, you are
working hard, heat builds up and having a

way for that heat to escape certainly helps
to keep you cool.

There is some adjustability that can be made
to the amount of the lumbar support.

There is actually a little panel here that
can be pulled out if you are finding that

You can take that out and save a few ounces
at the same time.

A couple of other points to mention here in
terms of fine tuning fit.

You have certainly got ways to cinch in on
the straps here on the shoulders.

You also have an adjustable and sliding sternum
strap.

I should also mention the fact that the pack
itself comes in three different sizes to accommodate

As far as ca-pacity on the pack is concerned,
on the small you are right around 4300 cubic

That increases to as much as 4800 cubic inches
on the large.

Going to go ahead and turn the Baltoro around
so we can take a look at its stand out set

Somewhat traditional in that you do have top
loading access beneath the lid.

It can lift to give you extra space to take
advantage of the extendable spin drift collar

It can be lowered into place when you aren’t
carrying quite as full a load and have cinched

It can also come off entirely when you simply
don’t need the lid and are looking to travel
