I'm mostly a portable operator and have settled on the Microsoft Surface Go 3. It's tablet sized but it's a Windows 11 machine. Way lighter than the 17" HP laptop I was using.

So fellow hams, my shack laptop has died and I’m shopping for a new one. Curious what you all are using these days. I’m thinking about going with a Intel Nuc running Ubuntu.

 It has a 1920 x 1280 resolution, and although it doesn’t get super bright, I think it looks good. Even though it’s not that much bigger than the first iteration, it feels much less cramped. Plus, as a bonus, the bezels are no longer vaguely, embarrassingly large.

But the screen is the major change here: it’s now 10.5 inches diagonally (and still at a 3:2 aspect ratio). It has a 1920 x 1280 resolution, and although it doesn’t get super bright, I think it looks good. Even though it’s not that much bigger than the first iteration, it feels much less cramped

On any other laptop, five or six hours would be a disappointment but not a huge one. But the Surface Go 2 is meant to be an ultra-portable, take-anywhere kind of gadget. And in that category, this battery life doesn’t really cut it.

If you know the limits, you will have a good experience with the Go 2 — but only for five or, at most, six hours. That’s the best I could get out of the battery, even when I was babying it with fewer apps and a lower-than-usual screen brightness. Microsoft put an ever-so-slightly larger battery in this year, but it hasn’t made a big difference.

 It is worse than the old Apple laptop keyboard. Plus, the chassis sags as you type. Really shoddy for the price.

Does Not Live Up to Great Reviews and Keyboard Sucks.

 This is very disappointing for a new laptop. On a positive note, the screen quality is the best I have had for any laptop, however you have to get an external dongle to connect a monitor as there is no hdmi, dvi, or vga on the laptop.

 This is the case even when I turn off background app refreshing and turn on battery saver mode to 'always'. The 4 year old computer I replaced had a better battery than this system. Note - I received a replacement laptop thinking maybe something was wrong with the unit and found the replacement was the same. I went through all settings and tried to reduce power useage, but it still seems limited to 4 hours

 I replaced a 4 year old Dell with the surface 4 laptop. When using common apps like Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Edge for everyday work tasks, the battery will not last 4 hours. Don't buy the surface laptop 4 if you want long battery life. The battery life on the surface laptop 4 does not meet anything close to the advertised amount. Battery drained in less than 4 hours with normal use -

 It put the wifi antennas in low-power mode so it took about 15 seconds for you to regain internet access when you lifted the lid up. Annoying! Now it's more like five seconds which is much more bearable. Thank you! I'm glad enough people complained for Microsoft to do something about this. So how's the value? Not great

 Microsoft's pricing is pretty silly and I don't like that at all - but what's new? For the casual user (I use my laptop for web-based work mostly), 8GB of memory is enough if you only use your laptop for the internet and some programs. If you are editing video and images, running VMs, etc., you're probably not getting a Surface Laptop. I could care less about the hard drive size as I have flash/external drives

I had the Surface Laptop 3 (AMD and Intel) and now I have the 4..... three good improvements!

Honestly with size preference being a factor I would suggest the M1 MacBook Air, the new 13” Razer Blade, or the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4. Each has their own pros and cons but should provide a professional machine for you.

I'm a webdeveloper and work on large frontend and backend applications. My main machine is a tower pc (i7-4770k, 16gb ram, 512gb ssd, ...) which is quite old (like 7 years) but still rocks and blows away every laptop I had.

When I'm at the clients place or traveling I need a development-machine with me. Right now I have a Dell XPS 13 9360 and I've grown to hate it actually. Back then the XPS13 was the holy grail and since all my mates had one I got one to when it was time for a replacement.

When googling for "best development laptop" or anything similar, all I get are lists of ultrabooks. I just don't get it. When did the ultrabook become the ultimate developers laptop? Sure it's light and small but I'd much rather have near-desktop performance and a bigger device. There's a huge difference between my tower and XPS 13 when it comes to compile times and the XPS 13 even feels a bit laggy with normal usage like office365 in the browser and so on.

In the last years lost track of all the CPUs and whatsoever. I just want a laptop that could possibly replace my tower pc and is still somewhat portable. Like max. 2kg and max 15 inch display.

I have no Idea what to get myself with all the "new Intel", AMDs and M1 machines. Can you help a frustrated developer?

Edit: There's no "budget". I run a company and a machine that let's me get my job done in a better way is more valuable than saving a couple hundred bucks.

I can't find a nice developers laptop and the trends make no sense to me.

 The i5 is a quad-core processor with hyperthreading, giving it 8 threads for work tasks. In most cases, the i5 will be more than suitable enough for even more demanding tasks like rendering on Adobe products. The limiting factor, for some, may be the 8 gigabytes of ram that isn't upgradable. The ram allows the computer to store information on much faster storage space for really quick access, so if that small ram amount fills up that information goes to the larger, albeit much slower in comparison, hard drive

 The build quality is exceptional, and while the device isn't the most repairable product on the market, Microsoft has gone through some lengths to help serviceability. The real trade-off is that the unique design means lower performance per dollar compared to the competition and lack of ports. Overall, it's a good laptop if you want a premium product with the Surface name and don't mind the few limitations of the device. Performance: The model reviewed here has the i5-1135G7, which is the lowest end variant of this unit, but if you haven't upgraded a computer in the past few years you will be shocked at the performance of mobile processors

 If you have any concern with the build quality, then hopefully I can put some ease that Microsoft didn't skimp on material. Understandably, with a unique display, you may be better off going to Microsoft for a quality unit if it breaks, but it is possible to replace it. Keyboard / Trackpad: I've read some complaints with flex on this keyboard, while this is true I didn't find it annoying in any way. I spent my college years typing on an X220 and understand that the keyboard is an important aspect when buying a laptop, the comfortable alcantara rest makes it comfortable to use - however, this fabric has been known to get discoloured after time

 I have more powerful laptops than the Surface, but generally, choose this device as it is just nicer to use on a day to day basis as a laptop. However, there is no denying that the value aspect is lost here compared to others on the market with 360 hinges and more upgradable components - the tradeoff is the unique screen, build quality, and support from the company that makes Windows. I can easily recommend the Surface for a large group of buyers but may recommend others to look at what they need a laptop for and adjust which version of the SL4 to purchase.
