I know timing is everything and, well, we seem to have found ourselves in a period in which Ring is offering virtually no discounts (other than those to first responders and military) and in which several of their products have 7-9 week delays due to supply chain issues. Meanwhile, Simplisafe is currently offering 40% off (45% off if you go with the monitoring plan.)  I'm shopping around for my elderly parent who will be living alone. 

To me, the main reasons for considering Ring were...

* More varied equipment choices (though, anyone else experience decision paralysis going through all their options, too?)
* $10/mo monitoring is a pretty unbeatable price
* Extended warranty on all equipment when you have the $10/monitoring (which, if we went with them, we would)

* Keyfob (not offered by Ring)
* Glassbreak sensor (not offered by Ring, and this house has a lot of entry level glass doors)
* Much lower installation costs (were we going to go with professional installation for the hardwired items, like the doorbell, it's much less expensive with Simplisafe)

**However, right now, for our equipment choices, we would be paying about $1600 up front to Ring vs. $600 to SimpliSafe.** And, yes, I called Ring to verify that I had the most advantageous bundled pricing on our selections.

I hope they're still alive and kicking in five years, but who knows? Also, I imagine people might start refreshing some of the equipment (like doorbell cams) after 5 years anyway?

Is there a GOOD reason to pay $1k MORE for Ring than for SimpliSafe?

 Alexa integration works as expected. I would recommend the 4th gen Echo to those who are in the market for their first Alexa device and who listen to music often at a casual level. I would not recommend this as an upgrade for those with previous generation Echo devices if they are functioning normally, or for those expecting a high-end audiophile experience.  PREFACE: --------------------------- I have owned the 4th generation Amazon Echo for 9 months and use it daily

 The environment outlined above is how I’ve used this Echo since I purchased it. The previous, 1st generation Echo had no issue with white noise, background noise, etc. This 4th generation Echo struggles to pick up my voice if there is any level of white noise, or if I’m speaking to it from more than a few feet away. 90 – 95% of voice interactions require that I repeat myself with increasing volume (sometimes two, three, four or more times) for it to register what I’m saying correctly, if I’m heard at all

 However, it often seems like the readings are delayed and take a long time to change, even when there is a noticeable increase/decrease in air temperature as a result of thermostat changes.

  • Temperature Sensor: This is an odd bonus to me, but a welcome one that I use often. It is self-calibrating, and routines can make use of its readings.  • Line In/Out Audio Jack: There is a 3.5mm jack on the bottom of the device next to the power adapter port which can be toggled to send audio out to another device if you wish to use the Echo with external speakers, or to accept audio if you wish play audio from another device using the Echo’s speakers

 I shouldn’t need to be just beneath shouting volume to be heard, and I shouldn’t feel constantly inconvenienced by using voice commands versus smartphone apps to control smart home features.  • Temperature Sensor Rate of Refresh: I have found no documentation or answers about how often the temperature sensor is refreshed. However, it often seems like the readings are delayed and take a long time to change, even when there is a noticeable increase/decrease in air temperature as a result of thermostat changes.

My nieces loved my 90s Sony stack so much that I pieced together a little system for them. Sony STR DH810 receiver paired with DVP NC875V Cd/DVD player run through Proficient NFM5 bookshelf speakers. $25 all in. Thought I'd share this super budget set.

New Shape, New Processor, Better Sound

This has been the most life changing hack with our 27 month old. Potty? Set a timer. Bed time? Set a timer. Lunch? Timer. TV off? Timer.

These transitions always created a power struggle when we would try to initiate them, even when we would give him several warning. But, miraculously, when we tell him that when the timer goes off, we will do x, there is zero argument. In the time between setting the timer and it going off, he talks about listening for the timer, what he’s going to do next, and reminds himself to listen for the timer. It goes off, and he transitions to the next activity with no fight. It has been a game changer.

But, miraculously, when we tell him that when the timer goes off, we will do x, there is zero argument. In the time between setting the timer and it going off, he talks about listening for the timer, what he’s going to do next, and reminds himself to listen for the timer. It goes off, and he transitions to the next activity with no fight. It has been a game changer.

Alexa, set a timer for five minutes.

 Luckily, "most" of my smart devices (Kasa and Feit) could all be controlled through their native apps. Fortunately for me, Alexa was only down for a couple of hours, and then all was good. The bad part was that my mother-in-law, who is in a wheelchair, uses Alexa to control the lights, ceiling fan, and TV in her apartment. The lesson here is that if you have a technically challenged person who relies of Alex, just realize that there will be times when Alex lets you down

Great sound (for the size and price), good voice recognition when located correctly.

  Going back to the software, That's why it's 4 stars instead of 5. I woke up the next morning, and the home theater no longer had sound. I deleted the group and set it up again, no luck. I noodled with the software for 2 hours, and it just refused to work
