 The pockets are small. So small that it is a struggle to fit gloves in and the chest outer pocket will fit an iPhone but would struggle to fit one of the larger sized phones. I have had this for a couple of years now and when I purchased this I genuinely thought it would be a coat that would last me for 20 years. However, we do need to take into account that this is a waterproof jacket with more of an urban look with some insulation rather than an out and out insulated jacket. That said, when I am standing still ‘on duty’ I need multiple layers underneath and this is when it’s not even in negative temperatures

I tried the Therme parka and it was a bust. Quality and fit (really short arms) were horrible.

The therme parka Is the perfect fit. I am 6 foot one 190 pounds with long arms, I love that this offers a fit for an athletic person. The Warmth of the coat  is great. The Style is great, The features are good

Which Arc pieces would you say you get the most use out of?

I normally wear size S for arcteryx, but decided to buy a size XS for this parka. Even with the size down, I still felt like it was somewhat loose around my chest and waist. The overall style is very good, but the color seems quite off. I bought the black one, but when it arrived, it was more of a dark grey than your average black

I recently purchased the Arc'teryx Radsten Parka in heather black and decided to write a review, since I have not seen many about this product. Please keep in mind that this is my first "real" winter jacket (I before just wore some random Uniqlo down jackets or something like that) and also my first Goretex jacket (besides my skiing gear). I used it for urban day-to-day wear. With it, I mostly wore sneakers, some jeans, a hoodie/sweater with a thin undershirt underneath and maybe a cotton zip up hoodie/vest.

Firstly, my stats: I have purchased this jacket (ik it's a parka but for simplicity's sake I'll call it a parka) 3 weeks ago and it arrived 2 weeks ago. I bought the size M and the colourway "heather black". MSRP is 600€, but you can easily find it for around 400€ (at least in Europe). I bought mine at globetrotter \[dot\] c0m for 419€ incl. shipping. I am 188cm (roughly 6'1-6'2) and weigh about 78kg (171lb). I usually wear an L and sometimes an XL for tops.

I run very cold (for example I'll only start wearing a T-shirt at around 23-24C) and used it for urban day-to-day wear. I live in Vienna, which seems to be warmer than NY, but colder than London. I bought the first "edition" of the Radsten, namely the one from their FW 2020. I'll use metric system (Celsius, Meters, Kilograms,...) in the following review.

Quality: The quality is very good. I have not seen a stitching flaw, loose threads or anything. The zippers don't jam or anything. So yeah the quality is very good.

Fit: According to this sub, a M should fit me pretty well and it does. I can comfortably wear a thick hoodie with a thin undershirt under it. I would have liked it a bit bigger tbh, since layering with a fleece or something over the hoodie almost is a bit too tight and I would prefer it a bit looser. I am not sure if an L would have been better, but the M is alright for me. I cannot talk about a comparison to any other Arc products, but a local mall has a Therme, I might try it on and comment how that fits. The hood is pretty big, but adjustable. I would have preffered it a bit smaller tbh. IMO the cuffs are a bit too tight (but just very slightly) and a bit too short for my liking, but not so much, that it actively annoys me. If you are wearing a hoodie underneath, you can have the hood (of the hoodie) on your back or it can fill out the jacket's hood and make it less waterproof- but warmer. 

Style/aesthetic: While being the most subjective, I quite like the looks of this jacket. The only thing bothering me is that the Logo is on the left arm, instead of the chest (looks a bit tacky to me) and that there is no "pure" black colour. The "heather black" is more like a dark heather grey and I would really not say that it is black. It (the colour) however still looks pretty good and can be matched with basically anything. I personally really like how this jacket looks.

Pockets: The jacket has got 4 pockets:

* The two pockets for the hands, one on each side: They are meant for the hands, and lined with a synthetic material (I don't think it's fleece), which feels pretty nice. The pockets are secured with little flaps, that cover their zippers. Idk what they are intented to do, but are probably to avoid water/wind (although all the zippers should be wind- and waterproof). Your wrists also don't rub up to the zippers bc of the flap, which is a comfortable touch. My hands had much room in there, so you could also store little things in the pockets (phone, flask, little pouch, wallet) or put your gloved hands in. The only problem I have with these pockets is, that because of the way they are cut (sideways-vertically) and the "strong" zippers, these pockets can be a bit tricky to open one-handed.
* The single pocket on the left chest: This is my covid-mask-pocket. It is pretty easy to open and can hold a phone, tissues, or in my case, a FFP2-Mask easily. This is probably my favourite pocket, since it is really easy to open/close and in just the right place.
* The single inside pocket: This one is located on the right chest and on the inside. I use it for my phone (Iphone 8 with a pretty thick case), since it keeps it warm, which helps with the battery. It is a bit complicated to access (bc you have to unzip your jacket a bit), but it gets the job done. It feels a bit smaller than the chest pocket, but if so, just slightly.

The neck-gaiter-thingy collar: The jacket features a stand collar which functions a bit like a neck gaiter/scarf. I don't like it too much, since I find that it rubs against my chin when I have the jacket fully zipped up (without the hood). When wearing the hood, the collar works a lot better. I just don't fully zip up the jacket and that's that.

The hood: The hood is adjustable on the back and on the sides. I heard that you are able to fit a skiing helmet underneath, didn't check that. It is however pretty big, but can be adjusted a good bit, although that gives it that strange effect, as if you pulled on the drawcords of a hoodie very strong (it scrunches up, i think that's the word). The hood also has a cap-like brim at the front, which should help against heavy rain, since it guides the dripping water a centimeter or two more away from your face. It is also insulated and NOT detachable.

NOW TO THE PERFORMANCE STUFF

Firstly, the Gore-Tex: Idk what exact gore-tex was used in making this jacket (although it can probably be found out very easily), but it is pretty good. I have never really used a gore-tex jacket and was impressed by how good it repells water and wind. Can't say anything more, the gore-tex is in my (a noobie's) opinion very good.

The warmth: The coldest I have worn this jacket at was -9C, and I have to admit, I was a bit cold (sweater, light cotton vest and undershirt underneath), but it was passable (I wasn't shivering or anything, it just was not very pleasant). I was just going from a train station to a friend's house, so I also was not "heating up" the jacket for long, so that might be something worth considering. Keep in mind, that I run very cold! I think this jacket shines at around the 0C mark, but I could feel the cold at about -5C. I think this jacket is a bit too cold for Viennese weather (at least for me), but anything a few degrees warmer (London, Berlin) should be fine. (Or just get a thermal layer or something).

Minor things I noticed:  
The cuffs are not perfectly round (by design) to sit better around your wrists. There is no thumbhole, thingy.

Due to the parka's lenght, it can be annoying to access the front pockets of your jeans or whatever, since you have to lift up your jacket a bit.

There is no two-way zipper, which really infuriates me. Because the jacket is cut pretty form-fitting however, There aren't too many bulges when sitting down and it doesn't look too bad.

Arc'teryx cut some holes in the armüits to make them extra-breathable. Idk if that really does something, but I just thought I would let you know.

There is minimally-stitched gore-tex branding on the side of your right sleeve.

There are little straps on the zippers to make them more easy to use.

The jacket is very light (I'd say under half a kilo) and does not look very thick (which isn't to say it looks low-quality, but it has a very slim shape to it).

VERDICT:  
Is this jacket good and would I recommend it? I think this is a very well-made jacket, but with a few design flaws (collar, hand pocket-zippers, no two-way-zipper, too big of a hood). For me personally, I find it a bit too cold (but bearable, especially since I tested it in the coldest time of the year), but that could very well be due to me needing very much warmth. I can comfortably say that I recommend it to anyone with winters at slightly below zero degrees, but certainly not anything below -10 degrees on average. I think that it works fine when it gets "warmer" (like +5 degrees). The good gore-tex also make it very viable in cold rain or something.

However, I would not buy it in its current form, since I strongly hope that Arc'teryx make some adjustments for a new version, but if you can get it on a discount I think it is a seriously good jacket.

I personally maybe should have gone with the Alpha IS, since that would have covered my need for warmth better, but it has been some really cold days in which I tested and the Radsten is not that much colder anyways.

I personally maybe should have gone with the Alpha IS, since that would have covered my need for warmth better, but it has been some really cold days in which I tested and the Radsten is not that much colder anyways.
