Aria or Titan S are the obvious choices if the Chu's tonality appeals to you. They mainly add more bass. For something more Harmanish there's the T3 Plus, which would be my preference, but all are very good.

Where should I upgrade from the CHU?

I picked up a 1981 Aria Pro II Cardinal on Reverb for about $450 recently. Medium scale, 32”. Really love the pickup.

Just joined the community, but I do have a question. Does anyone know a good bass from the 70s (early to mid 80s is ok, but mainly the 70s) that's a fatter one, but can be at a cheaper price? I look at a gibson g3 and a gibson l9s ripper but they are really expensive, any advice is useful! :D

aria pro II SB yay or nay

Action is fair and I much prefer pick playing when using (finger bassist at heart). Definitely can't go wrong with an Aria II as a first bass!.

I’ve heard good things about Arias, particularly from the 80s. I’ve seen an Aria Pro II for sale but it’s quite far away so before I commit to going and seeing it I was wondering whether people had any experience with them.

Are Arias any good?

 Compared to my no-brand nylon string starter, it just felt and looked amazing. I did my due diligence and took a few more guitars into subsequent lessons (I distinctly recall an Arbor Strat clone in Signal Flare Orange), but in the end I had to get the Aria.

Yes I'm intentionally avoiding the ropey nylon string we all had first and bust up with super heavy picks trying to rock it! (just me??? )

My first electric wasn't much better, in 1994 my Mum ordered  me an Encore Les Paul type pack from a catalogue (with an amp, strap and the infamous pitch pipe which noone I knew could even use 😂) 

The guitar looked nice in a very dark sunburst but it was terrible, the strings were stupidly heavy (back then the thought of changing strings on a new guitar just didn't happen with me)  the pickups and electrics were a bit crackly and intermittent and the neck felt like a cricket bat. I strummed away and learned about 3 clapton riffs, wild thing and burning love by Elvis as well as a ropey (and very wrong) version of smells like teen spirit. The whole experience was pretty dreadful BUT when I bought my next guitar which was a Squier affinity telecaster I felt as if i'd improved 1000% overnight.

I'd love to hear your success stories about a terrific first guitar or whether you had a nightmare experience like I did. (can't have been too bad, I started at 13 and am still mucking around with guitars at 40!)

[DISCUSSION] First Electric guitar stories.

I recently picked up a 1981 Aria Pro II Cardinal on Reverb and do in fact love the medium scale. Been playing a lot more guitar since COVID, so switching back and forth to 34” feels like more of a stretch to me at the moment, but 32” is more comfortable without sacrificing anything.

anybody else prefer medium scale instruments? I’m surprised at how little attention this concept has gotten in the bass word. There don’t seem to be many options I bought a 80s squier katana a while back, as a joke to use in some music videos

and it’s actually probably the most comfortable bass guitar that I’ve ever played. The bass design is not very ergonomic (it slides off my lap when seated and is quite neck heavy) but the neck itself is very much to my taste, basically a 32 scale precision profile. Serek basses out of Chicago makes some really nice medium scale instruments. I know that fender made some other medium scale Japanese models in the 80s. I wonder why this is not more of a thing. It sounds pretty close to a full scale p bass, possibly a bit snappier. Short scales are really in. Where are the medium scales? Any other brands or models I should check out? I have to admit I pretty much only like pickups, but it’s easier to route and replace a pickup than design a completely different instrument.

I agree with everyone else.  I have an Aria Pro II from 1982 that still plays great and I will never part with it.

I recently started a 6 month work assignment to Japan, and since I moved out of my condo before taking it will be making a decent amount of disposable income over the time I am here. 

I've decided that if I am going to bring home a souvenir, *I want it to fucking count.* 

That said, I don't speak the language, I am located pretty far from Tokyo or other major cities with large retailers and am mostly unfamiliar with high end/boutique brands built in Japan. 

I've tried googling and had a hard time finding hard info on retailers and builders and was wondering if anyone in the sub had experience with top tier Japanese basses and what builders/models or shops to look out for. I work three 12 hour shifts so I get 4 days off a week and can travel by bullet train to see instruments first hand and money is not an obstacle. I have a budget in mind that should cover anything that isn't an ambitious custom build. 

Not really looking for anything I could get somewhere else. I have my Musicmans and Fenders and Spectors that I love dearly, but if I am going to buy a bass in Japan it has to be Japanese built. It's going to be what I remember this trip by and hopefully an instrument I own for life. 

Any advice is welcome! Thanks!

it seems like every short scale bass i've looked at has active electronics. the only one i've seen is the harley benton PB-shorty, and i don't trust the quality control on harley benton's cheap instruments. i've had issues with my SUB's electronics, and i would like to avoid the headache if possible. the top of my budget is around $500, but if nothing exists in that price range, i can go higher. thank you!

are there any short scale passive basses?

My favorite bass was an Aria Pro II. My ex took it with him when we split, it was his. They are hard to find and I can’t afford any of ones that I found that are in great condition. 

I’m looking at GSR200 and GSR200SM.

<p>EDIT - thanks everyone! I think I’m going to stick with the Ibanez for affordability. He’s not planning on going on the road again and just wants something that I can play along with him at home.</p>
