 I guess if I did not have a nonstick pan and only wanted to use one pan, I would look around to see if any of the more expensive "gourmet" cast iron pans that have come out in the past couple of years have gone back to polishing the cooking surface smooth. But those pans also cost a lot more money than this one.  So overall, this is not your mother's cast iron pan. But it is not expensive, and for certain tasks it does a very fine job - better than with any other type of pan

 It doesn't - and you don't want it to, either. Cast iron actually releases heat at a much faster rate than aluminum and copper. Hold your hand over a hot aluminum pan and over a hot cast iron pan and tell me which one is releasing more heat. And you want that, because the whole point is to have the pan transfer the heat to your food

  First off I want to address a couple of incorrect statements in the product description here which do not make a good impression.  The description says that cast iron construction provides even heat distribution. It doesn't. Cast iron will NEVER distribute heat better than aluminum pr copper simply because aluminum and copper are MUCH better conductors of heat than iron is

  Now having said all that, this pan is "OK." It is very heavy, even for a cast iron pan, but I am a larger guy and that is not a problem for me at all. However, a smaller or more frail individual might have a problem with that.  I mostly use this pan to fry chicken, to blacken fish, to sear steaks, and to brown roasts, and it does a fine job with all that

 Although it's preseasoned I still seasoned it several times. Unfortunately that didn't stop the seasoning from flaking off and getting on whatever food I cook in the pan. Now I have to strip it & start over. I do like that it has 2 handles which makes for easier lifting

I have had this pan for about 2 years and initially I was regretting not just getting a lodge purely due to brand recognition. It takes a while to develop a good seasoning but once it’s heavily seasoned it really starts to set itself apart. The heavy construction makes it well suited for searing and anything that you want a good crust on. Once you lay down a good layer of seasoning on it, things like eggs just jump right out of the pan! Full disclosure - I did do a light sanding job inside the pan to make it a little smoother but honestly I sort of miss the rough surface because I have been having issues with developing a seasoning on the middle of the pan since it’s so smooth
