To be honest, I’m not blown away. I’m coming from an Aston Origin which I was fairly happy with, just noticed some slight imperfections when you’d sing loudly, and p’s and t’s didn’t sound as smooth if that makes sense.

 As far as I can tell, the sound quality is about $200. I was fooled into thinking it would sound like a $500 or $1000 mic. I really like the look and feel of the design but I returned it b/c obviously I am looking for a great sounding mic not a great looking mic!

 You can see exactly where I put the microphone, exactly where I've set it up. The shock mount has to be said is not by Aston, this is actually a Rycote shock mount, it comes as part of the deal. So everything you see from there to there comes in the package. There's some really cool stuff about this thing, I'll show you around it as we go through

 That whole British sound thing is really coming back. Now Aston Microphones are newcomers but they are born off the back of the whole SE microphone range so these guys know their onions when it comes to microphones. Now this thing is very very cool, there's a few points that make it a bit different. Obviously there's a large diaphragm condenser capsule inside there behind this kind of wave guide shield thing which does some really cool stuff which also means I don't need a pop filter

 I thought this thing's pretty much going to be price point wise aimed at the kind of singer songwriter, singer guitarist, vocalist, that sort of thing. So I thought I'd put together a track around that sort of idea. I'll build it up track by track and then we'll play the whole thing at the end. So here we go, the first couple of tracks are going to be acoustic guitars, the first three tracks in fact are acoustic guitars

I own an Aston Origin and it's amazing. Haven't heard great things on Slate hardware but most users rave about Aston microphones. Will do what you need it for.

I have been looking to buy a new microphone, and have been torn between the Slate ML-1 &amp; Aston Spirit. The goal is to record vocals in the pop/urban/rap genre. Would like to hear your opinions!

Thoughts about Slate ML-1?

I had pops, modulation and a white noise issue with this microphone. It sounded okay but I don't want a troublesome microphone for my production. Sent back and bought anther microphone from Amazon.

Good sound with issues

Though it’s not really “time” tested, the Aston Origin mic has been tested like crazy over the last few years, and is holding its own against much more expensive mics. It’s just cardioid, but it plays nicely with damn near everything, and it’s built like a tank. And only $199 right now. I bought my second one a week after buying my first

I'm setting up a small home studio. Mostly I'm getting a new laptop to learn Ableton, sound synthesis/design. But I'd like to be able to record as well, as I have some prior skill as a guitarist/drummer/bassplayer and I'm interested in sampling as well. I've settled on a USB-interface with 2 inputs.


The tough question: What would be a good, all-round, budget friendly mic/pair of mics?
I'm leaning towards a pair of sm57s. I'd be able to record in stereo, or make a mono-mix with different mic-positions. I could record a whole drum kit Beatles-style, a guitar amp, vocals, acoustic sound sources - anything really. 
I like that at a budget friendly price, I'm getting a durable tool that is actually used in pro recordings. I won't be needing to replace these mics ever, they will last for years and will always have some application if and when I expand my collection of gear.


Though I'm wondering how much I would miss those higher frequencies when recording, let's say, an acoustic guitar. As the sm57 only goes up to 15k. I'm really into the alternative, lo-fi sound. And I know I can get a sound that'll sit well in a mix with the sm57. But it would be kind of nice to be able to get a crisp clean recording as well.


I know I could get a somewhat decent condenser mic for the same price, which would perhaps be better suited for acoustic sound sources. But I'm worried about build quality, hissing/buzzing and that kind of stuff. I can't shake the feeling that those are toys, or "for beginners". I haven't put alot of hours into studio work, but I have been playing and studying music for years at this point and I'm tired of buying stuff that you outgrow and have to sell and upgrade. 


Are there any industry mainstays, time-tested condensers out there? At what price point to they start getting good? And would it even be worth going condenser if you don't have a room with good acoustics to set up in? Dynamics sort of circumvent that problem.


Thoughts? Suggestions?

This microphone sounds good, although it is ultra Crisp. what I didn’t like about it is that I have to turn up the gain on the preamp very high to get it hot.

My favorite ‘budget’ condenser is the Aston Origin, fwiw. It sometimes beats out more expensive (1970s akg 414, stam SA87) mics for vocals at my studio, depending on the voice.

Just for background, I play bass and sing vocals for a small 3 piece pop punk band, and we've recently started recording. I've been using an Audio Technica AT2035 for the past 3 years or so, but it has never belonged to me and I feel that its time to return it to its owner and upgrade. I don't want to spend more than $300 on a new condenser and I've done my fair share of research on YouTube, Sweetwater, wherever. I've narrowed my choices down to the following:

\- Audio Technica AT4040

\- Blue Bluebird

\- Rode NT1

\- Shure SM27

If anyone has a particular preference or what they think would work best for my application, or even another suggestion that I haven't listed that I should consider, that would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance everyone!

What $300 vocal mic should i upgrade to?

 In my opinion it sounds much more expensive - it has a lower noise floor and is voiced more like a classic high end LDC microphone. In fact nothing really comes close at the $250 - $300 range. The Rode NT1 is also another option but sounds much less open with an overall constrained vibe. If you have the opportunity, listen for your self as I think you will be shocked at the differences!

 At this price point I actually like the Lewitt LCT 440 Pure much better and believe it to be the best in class for a microphone with enhanced high frequencies! These are very subtle differences and would go unnoticed by many without experience. The Lewitt microphone does not have the pad or high pass, but does come with some nice accessories. In my opinion it sounds much more expensive - it has a lower noise floor and is voiced more like a classic high end LDC microphone. In fact nothing really comes close at the $250 - $300 range

 It isn't as brittle sounding as a Rode NT1A, but check the specifications for noise as it is actually pretty high (higher than any of the competition that I know about). I have compared it to several other microphones in my stable including (Audio Technica 4040, AKG P420, AKG C414 II, Rode NT1a, Rode NT1, Rode K2, Shure SM7B, EV RE20, Beyerdynamic M88, Neumann TLM 103, Neumann TLM 49, Neumann U87ai, etc.). It is better than some of these on certain voices but has never been the best choice in my experience
