 So you want that to be great and consistent throughout your record. Now recording kick drum is kind of a tricky thing. Some people have a hard time getting a good tone with their kick drum. It's either really muffled sounding or maybe there's too much low and not enough emphasis in the high or vice versa and it just sounds kind of flat

Getting a good kick drum sound is something that a lot of people struggle with, I know I did. But, I came across a really neat microphone with an "unorthodox" idea which helped me get a really defined kick in my recording. Introducing: the Shure Beta91!

To those who mix with two mics on the kick:

\-Which mics?

\-How are you handling them on the console?  Is one for highs and the other for lows, are you blending the full range of each together, how about typical compression, EQ, etc?

I don't often use two kick mics, but I'd like to hear why or why not, and what your starting approach is on mixing them.

Two Mics On Kick

 This mic has a very neutral response so you'll need to EQ it more than other bass drum mics. There is a switch to dip the EQ around 300 Hz which will take some "mud" out of the mix. This is the best mic I've found for bass drums 24" and up.

Great low end, good for big bass drums.

Hi, i recently started playing some pretty big shows (relative to me) with my band, and trying to mix our live sound by myself is pretty damn difficult, but it's getting there..  i want to make sure my kick drum gets through clearly. I play a lot of intricate patterns on the kick with my songs but i just get the low end boom through on the live recordings so unless you're really paying attention you cant really distinguish the double kick patterns. I want the kicks to be perfectly audible through everything in our songs and so I'd love some tips to guarantee i get the individual kicks coming through.

Getting clarity out of live kick drum.

Quick setup and solid sound

I'm a musical artist/teacher of a bunch of instruments/social media content producing person with a home studio. I don't really record anyone else but myself and probably would only collab with individual people one at a time in my home studio after the pandemic. Aiming for a "permanently setup" situation. I may switch out mics occasionally, but essentially I want to be able to record anything at any time. Anyways,

I bought an RE20 to use as my kick drum mic and I've experimented with it in a bunch of places. I started in the kick drum with it and moved it all around until it was straight up outside the front of the kick but no matter what it sounds bad. I can hear all the air hitting the mic. I have a pretty huge kick drum admittedly but I was hitting it gently. The kick drum sounds excellent to me in the room, deep and full and not woofy at all, it's a nice strong tone. I'm trying to figure out how to capture that tone. 

The only place I didn't hear tons of air in the mic was outside the kick with the RE20 pointed at an angle at the beater head where the beater hits, which gave me some click that I think would be great for definition in the mix, but I still need to capture that deep full kick drum sound somehow. I do have an SM7B that I could use on kick but I'm aiming for a setup where I can leave everything set up and record my ideas at a moment's notice no matter what it is. The SM7B normally lives on my desk on a rode PSA-1 arm for YT videos/vocals/acoustic instruments. I'm not opposed to buying a second one for kick though. I've also seen a lot of people use these weird-looking subkick mics that look like a tiny drum in many studio drum mic setup videos I've watched. In one video, I think I found it in this sub actually, a guy hung an RE20 from some string in the center of the kick but I don't know how he did that.  


TLDR; Only place RE20 doesn't pick up way too much air is outside the beater head pointed at where beater contacts the head. Gives me some click but I still need to capture the deep full sound of my kick and I am not sure how to do that, since even gently hitting my kick pedal overwhelms the mic. Seems like maybe I need a special placement or a different mic.

<p>Thanks all for your help! This is one of my most favorite music subs on here :) I think I’m gonna get an AKG D112 for my kick mic, seems like it will be easier to use than my RE20 for now, an Octopre to plug my mics into, and use the SM57 I have on the snare, and my TLM103 as a mono OH for now. Perhaps later on I’ll build up to a couple C414s as an OH pair and Earthworks DM20s for the toms and maybe the snare.</p>
