Atomic stuck with what works when it designed its Backland Tour Binding--its intuitive design aims to make touring an efficient experience by combing a classic two-pin toe piece with a streamlined heel piece. A small metal bar extends across the binding to guide your boot's tech fittings into the pins as you step into the binding, eliminating the chance of overshooting the pins to save time during transitions. Atomic also widened the mounting pattering of the binding, which helps improve power transmission to the ski and strengthen binding retention to reduce the risk of pullouts when you're skiing aggressively in less-than-ideal conditions. Putting an emphasis on simplicity, Atomic designed the heel to rotate in both directions and equipped it with two heel risers to adapt to varying terrain and slope angles although, your touring partners will appreciate it if you keep your skin track as mellow as possible.

While the Salomon MTN / Atomic Backland Tour binding doesn’t have any really flashy new tech or radical design features, it’s still a solid, simple, and efficient tech binding that’s performed very well on the up, and pretty well on the down. The MTN / Backland Tour works really well on the skintrack, allows for quick transitions, skis pretty well for its weight, and has few parts that could potentially break in the backcountry. All of this makes it a pretty good all-around option for those that prioritize low weight and simplicity over maximum downhill performance.

Boots Used: Scarpa Maestrale RS; Nordica Strider 120; Tecnica Zero G Tour Pro; Atomic Backland Carbon

 But if you’re not charging in your lightweight touring gear — i.e., you’re actually using it how it’s meant to be used — the MTN / Backland Tour is a strong overall performer.

And for the record, this is a great example of how good backcountry skiers have it these days.

A few other things: Toe (single) is 3 grams heavier than the original, heels are identical according to my scale. The available ski brake remains the best in the business. Why? It is entirely divorced from the heel unit, and 100% manually operated compared to the often overly complex, failure-prone offerings from other brands, that attempt integration of the brake with the heel unit.
