ATVM95ML Review

Coming from an AT95E to the AT-VM95ML. The difference is big for me, and everything I didn’t like about the 95E is gone with the 95ML. I fell down the audiophile rabbit hole and choosing a cartridge/stylus was more difficult than I thought. I settled on this one for the quality/price ratio, and I am so happy with my decision!

The AT95e and the new AT-VM95e are great $50 cartridges. If that was my budget, I'd be pretty happy with either one. In my experience and opinion, a line contact diamond doen't elevate this cartridge to the level that it costs. It doesn't have the more refined quality of sound and smoothness that should be expected from a cartridge that costs over $150

AT-VM95E vs. AT-VM95ML Stylus Comparison

I’m upgrading from an LP60X to an LP120X I eventually would like to upgrade the cartridge and stylus but there’s so many options out there, any advice on eventual upgrades?

 Perhaps the preamp in the turntable is of insufficient quality to take advantage of any improvements coming from the stylus. Or, perhaps something else downstream is also of insufficient quality (including my ears). But for the price differential, and because of glowing reviews, I was really hoping for SOME noticeable improvement, but there was none that I am able to detect.

I wanted to love this cartridge (who doesn't want better sound). I have a new AT-LP120XUSB which comes with the AT-VM95E cartridge/stylus. After reading many reviews stating how wonderful the MicroLinear nude stylus is on this cartridge, I decided to spend the money and get it.  But after many, many tests, I can literally hear no detectable improvement to the audio with the AT-VM95ML

Nice Cartridge-No Detectible improvemnet from AT-VM95E

Understanding this sub is "budget" audiophile, thought I'd run some less expensive MM cartridges through my deck.  The least expensive is a Shure M44 that came on an old free table.  Most expensive is a still affordable $120 Audio-Technica AT-VM95EN.

Test track was "Famous Last Words" from the "Living With Ghosts" 10-year anniversary release of MCR's "Welcome to the Black Parade".

First up was the Shure M44 with a Tonar Elliptical stylus.  Best description - thumpy.  Lots of bottom end, but dull in the midrange, and missing top end detail.  I can see why this is (was) such a popular cartridge for DJs.  Cost - $20CDN for the stylus.

Second up was an Ortofon Omega.  Suddenly much more mid detail, with a "normal" amount of bass.  Top end was good but not overly sharp.  Excellent value for the money, but did get congested in the mids when the music for more complicated.  Cost - $35CDN.

Third up was a Grado Prestige Green.  Completely different presentation than the other two cartridges, with an overall cleaner sound.  Has the Grado "house sound" which has warm mids, solid bass, and some rolled off top end.  A very pleasant and listenable cartridge, but can hum on a DD turntable.  Cost - $99CDN (sale).

Last up was the Audio-Technica AT-VM95EN, the only cartridge with a nude elliptical diamond.  A clear step up from the Shure and Ortofon cartridges, with the top end clarity AT is known for.  More "exciting" a presentation than the Grado, but also found some surface noise the others didn't.  Cost - $119 (sale).

Each of the cartridges brought something different to the table.  Both vintage and inexpensive cartridges like the Shure and Ortofon provide plenty of value, and are great for a starter or budget system.  It wasn't tested here, but the Audio Technica AT-3600L is also a great budget cartridge, especially for classic rock.

However, spending the extra scratch to move up to the Grado or AT is certainly worth the spend.  Although not part of this shootout, an Ortofon OM-10 would also be worth the jump in price if you're looking for something a bit more dynamic than the Grado but not as exciting as the AT.

Cheap Cartridge SHOOTOUT!

Yeah so this question’s probably been brought up a lot, but I’m curious what the community thinks about what cartridges are worth buying in the new year. I also tried researching different cartridges but the number/letter combos in the names are confusing me quite a bit (especially the Audio Technica brand, like we need better names lol)

The only thing sound wise I really want to make sure is present is a punchy bass as I listen to a lot of hip hop and RnB. Any suggestion below 2-300 dollars is appreciated!

Bought a technics sl 1900 on eBay recently and I’m pumped to give it a go, but will need to replace the cartridge since it’s used. What are your recommendations?

 The bass is punchy and detailed but not very "full". My favorite thing about this cartridge is that it can make some of my older scuffed up records sound crystal clear.

This cartridge tracks very well, no inner groove distortion, no sibilance. The clarity is fantastic, but I would say it sounds a little thin in the lower end.
