I'm a musical artist/teacher of a bunch of instruments/social media content producing person with a home studio. I don't really record anyone else but myself and probably would only collab with individual people one at a time in my home studio after the pandemic. Aiming for a "permanently setup" situation. I may switch out mics occasionally, but essentially I want to be able to record anything at any time. Anyways,

I bought an RE20 to use as my kick drum mic and I've experimented with it in a bunch of places. I started in the kick drum with it and moved it all around until it was straight up outside the front of the kick but no matter what it sounds bad. I can hear all the air hitting the mic. I have a pretty huge kick drum admittedly but I was hitting it gently. The kick drum sounds excellent to me in the room, deep and full and not woofy at all, it's a nice strong tone. I'm trying to figure out how to capture that tone. 

The only place I didn't hear tons of air in the mic was outside the kick with the RE20 pointed at an angle at the beater head where the beater hits, which gave me some click that I think would be great for definition in the mix, but I still need to capture that deep full kick drum sound somehow. I do have an SM7B that I could use on kick but I'm aiming for a setup where I can leave everything set up and record my ideas at a moment's notice no matter what it is. The SM7B normally lives on my desk on a rode PSA-1 arm for YT videos/vocals/acoustic instruments. I'm not opposed to buying a second one for kick though. I've also seen a lot of people use these weird-looking subkick mics that look like a tiny drum in many studio drum mic setup videos I've watched. In one video, I think I found it in this sub actually, a guy hung an RE20 from some string in the center of the kick but I don't know how he did that.  


TLDR; Only place RE20 doesn't pick up way too much air is outside the beater head pointed at where beater contacts the head. Gives me some click but I still need to capture the deep full sound of my kick and I am not sure how to do that, since even gently hitting my kick pedal overwhelms the mic. Seems like maybe I need a special placement or a different mic.

<p>Thanks all for your help! This is one of my most favorite music subs on here :) I think I’m gonna get an AKG D112 for my kick mic, seems like it will be easier to use than my RE20 for now, an Octopre to plug my mics into, and use the SM57 I have on the snare, and my TLM103 as a mono OH for now. Perhaps later on I’ll build up to a couple C414s as an OH pair and Earthworks DM20s for the toms and maybe the snare.</p>

So, I've kind of landed on a D112 inside and an old ADK S7b (Yes, it's called the S7b -NOT the Shure SM7B -It's a LDC with a smoother top end that kind of emulates a ribbon...) on outside kick, but recently I've been seeing people do all kinds of stuff -421's inside, SM7B outside. I've got some more ADK LDC's and also have a 421 and two sm7b's that I really don't have much use for. Admittedly, I am a little nervous to put a 421 in there, but just wanted to see what ya'll are up to. Things you've tried, etc...

 or 2 kick mics at all. You can probably buy a better kick mic for a lot more money, but you’d be hard pressed to get a useable one for any less. Of the standard choices, I will only use this one for close mic of a ported drum. Engineers have tried to use other mics on my drums, but a quick A/B test and they’ve all come around and agreed that my D6 sounds better than whatever they wanted to use

Best kick mic available.

Just a deep, solid sound. For reference I also own or have owned the Beta 52, Beta 91, Audix D6, SM7B, Sennheiser 421/441/e902, and Heil PR30/40, and used almost all of the usual suspects in various studios.

I'm looking to upgrade my mics and am looking at getting an Earthworks audio SR25 for my overhead.  I'm curious what people recommend for a kick mic.  The D112 seems popular but I'm wondering if there's something better for under $500?

Looking for a kick mic and overhead for simple drum recording setup

 To that point, the Audix D6 does a pretty good job of capturing upper mids, but you may not like the particular frequency it accents.  -K

 The microphone is certainly better-suited for hard rock or metal, as it does tend to give a somewhat "scooped" sound, but in a mix, it is not that big of a deal.  When recording bass cabinets, I would recommend a good, balanced condenser microphone to go along with this one to make up for the loss of mids. To that point, the Audix D6 does a pretty good job of capturing upper mids, but you may not like the particular frequency it accents.  -K
