If you're looking for something completely different, try the Boox Nova 3.  It's small enough to be portable and use a notepad and powerful enough to be a real tablet.  You can even watch video on it with sound! Neoreader and the availability of the koreader app means it's also perfectly useable for PDFs too.

I have way too many but honestly most are just taking up space.  I only really use the Pocketbook and the Nova 3 color. Occasionally the Oasis and Voyage come out, and I keep the Kindle Basic in my motorcycle for when I'm stuck waiting at a drive through or there's going to be a lot of standing around waiting.

I used to have a Kindle Keyboard, which was my only reader for like 7+ years. Eventually it broke and I started reading on an 8" Asus tablet. That was actually really good (it's got a 4:3 QHD resolution and really good screen), but the backlight was still bothersome. 

Bought a Kindle Paperwhite 4 in early 2019 but still kept switching back and forth between size vs. e-ink, so bought a Boox Nova 2 in 2020 and haven't looked back. 

I really like the Boox. The screen size is perfect and I love the warm light option. Now just waiting for color e-ink to improve in quality. The Kindle sits in a drawer 90% of the time now, though I guess it's nice to have a backup if anything goes wrong with the Boox reader.

I wouldn't mind a 10" reader, but price-wise they're not really worth it to me right now. Maybe in the future though.

I’ve quickly accumulated a collection of ereaders and it happened within a matter of weeks. Kind of ridiculous considering you can only do one thing on them and even then most people only read one or two books at a time. 

It started with trying to find the perfect device but then it evolved to a desire to own more obscure or niche devices. 

Currently I own:

A white Kindle Paperwhite 2015, found it for a cheap price new in box. Use it to read my kindle library and also other kindle freebies. Tall with big bezels and light so blue it’s like you’re reading in the Arctic. 


Nook Glowlight 3, fabulous hardware. Grippy soft touch plastic and satisfying page turn buttons. Lovely warm light that covers the whole 6 inch screen with no dead spots. Janky software. Deleted all my sideloaded books. Has a swipe to unlock screen which I find to be superfluous.


Kobo Clara HD: Great compact size. Maybe I bought a lemon because at the bottom of the screen there’s quite a few dead spots where the light is uneven. I love how it slowly changes the light temperature depending on the time of day. My go to Overdrive/library book reader. 


Also in the Kobo drawer are a 2013 Aura and two minis. Love these little guys. 

Next the red headed step kids of my collection. My AliExpress 4.3 inch reader which is surprisingly capable. Also I have a whole box of 1st and 2nd gen kindles I’m trying to fiddle with. 

So with that being said which one should I buy next? Android boox poke? Or maybe a refurbed voyage?

 Now, Amazon's and Kobo's latest midrange ebook readers use new 7-inch E Ink Carta 1200 panels. Those screens show more text per page and enable faster page turns than previous models. 

Barnes & Noble says the 1,400mAh battery should allow the Nook to last a long while without a recharge, but I don't think that's accurate based on my week's worth of anecdotal testing. The ebook reader handled about one long book before requiring a recharge, although, to be fair, I didn't need to recharge it mid-book.

Do ebooks help you in your minimalist lifestyle?

As the title states, I’m debating on whether to buy the Clara 2e or the Kobo Libra 2. I’m nearly sold on the Libra 2, but have some worries as to how comfortable it is to use in bed. 

Is there any noticeable strain from the weight of holding the Libra above your head? Another thing is that I’ll often lay on my side to read, with my device being propped up horizontally by the bed. Would this be uncomfortable on the Libra given it’s odd shape and larger size? 

Lastly, and I know this one is very subjective, but if it’s true that the Libra would generally be more uncomfortable in these positions, do you feel that the larger screen makes up for it?

Kobo Libra 2 vs Clara 2e for bed reading

Hey everyone.

I'm looking for a budget (just a basic entry-level) e-reader with:

* USB-C
* Backlight
* Ability to sideload EPUBs
* Ability to long-hold a word to get the definition from local dictionary
* Doesn't need to connect to internet for normal usage (except for software update)
* Doesn't need to create an account

The cheapest I could find is Lemon Read on Aliexpress, but not sure about the software. It's using a very old Android version (4.2.2) and I'm not sure if it supports the dictionary feature. I'd be fine with it if the software is nice to use in English language (because I assume the software will be better in Chinese language because they are designed for Chinese market), supports the dictionary feature, and allows EPUBs sideloading.

I have used an older Nook that I was able to use a mechanical pencil/eraser as a guide to speed reading and ideally I’d like to be able to continue using a pointer for speed reading but from what I’m aware, most of the more modern e-readers use pressure sensitive screens instead of touch capacitive screens so any pressure on the screen would act as a button press.

I was looking at the Kobo Libra but I’m concerned about that. Does anyone have any experience trying to speed read on an e-reader?

E-reader for speed reading?

 Both are the same size (they use the same body), but the screen resolutions are different. The 4 has a 300ppi screen, the 4e has 212ppi.

Looking at getting my first Nook. I generally read paper books, but have had a kindle paperwhite 2nd gen for a bit. 

I don't really have many books on there, and am looking at making the switch for various reasons (Preferring B&amp;N over Amazon, liking the overall look of nooks better,etc). 

Anywho. Should I go with one of the new ones (Glowlight 4 or 4e?) or look at an older used Glowlight 3?

I don't particularly care about things like warm light or anything of that sort. I really just care if it works good enough to read a book, and has a light. I just want something that I can read books in bed when my physical books are too difficult to read in those situations.

<p>I don&#39;t particularly care about things like warm light or anything of that sort. I really just care if it works good enough to read a book, and has a light. I just want something that I can read books in bed when my physical books are too difficult to read in those situations. </p>

Haven’t tried the Glowlight 4 but I really like my Glowlight 3! Solid hardware and the continued software support (Nook software isn’t as snappy as Kindle)

I've had a Kindle Voyage forever and the battery finally went caput yesterday. I saw the Nook Glowlight 4 came out last month and thought about getting it as I used to have an old Glowlight that I enjoyed. Does anyone have any other recommendations under $150? Preferably something relatively open (i.e. not a kindle). Thank you!

Looking into a new ereader under $150, is the Nook Glowlight 4 any good?

**Nook GlowLight 4 (black or white):** 170 g, 32 GB, 300 PPI ($149; was on sale for $120), blue & yellow light, 4 buttons for lefties and righties, not waterproof. **Nook GlowLight 4e (black):** 168 g, 8 GB, 212 PPI ($119; was on sale for $96), blue light only, 4 buttons for lefties and righties, not waterproof.

I think my Nook Simple Touch is finally giving up the ghost... it's started to not respond to touch for certain menus, won't let me define words and access the device menu options, things like that. (Not like dead pixel areas, just like the menu function for certain things got disconnected somehow.)

I have nerve damage to my wrists and chronic daily migraines that are made worse by cellphone type screens so I'm looking for a lightweight replacement that retains the dull paper looking screen that this one has. I'd also love it to have a microsd card slot for expanded memory.
