 The problem was the burner itself. So I gave up and sent it back.  I still give this 3 stars because it did work pretty well at lower settings -- it was about as powerful as what you'd get from a high-end Wolf indoor gas range or the like (~15kBTU). But from an outdoor burner, I expect a lot more

 I called the manufacturer twice -- on the first call, I got a rather unhelpful gentlemen who basically told me "you don't really need all that heat" and that was that. Well, I bought this unit because I want a lot of heat, and all the reviews indicate that this burner ought to give you a lot of heat. So that wasn't really acceptable. I called again a few days later and got somebody a bit more helpful, who sent me a new regulator and hose

 This unit excels at producing an 80,000 BTU roar but it is difficult to adjust for lower cooking temperatures. UPDATE AFTER SIX MONTHS OF USE: This cooker needs a much better gas flow control valve. It is very difficult to adjust the size of the flame with the tiny valve that comes with the unit. A larger adjusting valve would allow you to adjust the flame size so you can cook at lower temperatures

On a 70-degree calm day, I was able to bring 9 gallons of water in an 11-gallon pot to a rolling boil in 35 minutes. To test steam production I used the same pot filled with 3" of water and had lid-lifting steam in 8 minutes

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  The only negative thing I have found with the unit is its height. Since I'm a very tall guy, cooking on the ground is not an option for me. Even seated I'm having to bend over to cook which is not comfortable. I can put it on my outdoor counter top but that puts my wok nearly at chin level

  Burner Results: I could not find a BTU rating for the burner, but it must be above 12,000 BTUs. Propane burner heated the water hot enough to boil quickly. So much so it would boil over an open pot that was 3/4s full! Good results and fast albeit loud with a low jet type sound. Make sure your Propane tank is not low as it uses a lot of gas and benefits from full tank pressure

Burner Review and Mods

The Amazon description and pictures all indicated that the 20 psi regulator with the brass needle valve and 48" hose are included. Even the outer box I received from Bayou Classic confirms all of these same specs. But when I opened the box I found a M5HPR regulator & hose set that is 10 psi with a 36" hose and a plastic control knob on the regulator. (We received this burner on July 28, 2011)  Not very happy as this is what comes on lesser models and is not the same 20 psi regulator and needle valve that has made this burner set so powerful and easy to control

 I would opt for a 30psi regulator though (which is what i'm going to buy). That's my 0.02 anyways.  O BTW - the paint will flake off b/c of the high heat - this thing is loud too! It's LOW LOW LOW and that's a safety factor for me b/c my buddy has the higher version of this and I don't feel safe standing by it especially taking the crawfish out when done

 I'll complain if the company is worth it - seems like these guys don't want to take care of their customers. I'm not rating on missing parts/crappy customer service or the likes. I'm giving a rating on the item itself - if rocks! Errrrrr even with teh 10psi regulator ;) I should have purchased their higher end one - maybe it would come with a 20psi regulator?  On the BTU now.

Great little burner - bummer on the BTU!

Great all-around burner.

 It was easy to assemble and is very sturdy. The steel hose is nice upgrade over the rubber hoses you get with other models. I don't know how many BTU's the burner is but it BLASTS out some heat. I used this model along with the Bayou Classic 1118 32-Quart Stainless Steel Turkey Fryer
