It looks like brother has moved to effectively requiring their toner or else they cripple the printer. So brother is out. Any other recommendations? 

I'm also looking to scan some old family photos. They are already not super clear, so I'd like a decent scanner to not further potato them. 

Under $300 ideal. Black and white only is fine, but color is a slight bonus.

Laser printer that takes generic toner and has a good scanner?

 For $9/toner, and $28 for a Linkyo Drum, I'm money ahead from Brother supplies. And if I wreak the printer, I'm already money ahead.  If non-OEMs can produce supplies at this price point, and clearly they wouldn't they weren't profitable, then why can't Brother/OEMs? The printer cost was ~$200, and they charge $100 for a drum and $76/toner cart, $176 for toner/drum is nutty. As Tom Hanks said in "Big" - "I don't get it

Looking for a printer + scanner recommendation, price up to 400 €

Excellent machine but the installation support - not so much

Do not buy the colour laser printer. The running cost is ridiculous even when you just print black as every colour is used. The only downside is that my third Brother printer, the MFC-L2750DW, decided to stop connecting with most of my computers one day and nothing I could do could make it reconnect, but that was like after 5 years.

I'm a broke college student looking to get a chromebook-compatible printer solely to print black and white lecture slides. I know you used to need cloud printing, but it looks like now chromebooks support usb cords for printing?  I don't need great printing quality, it just needs to get the job done reliably. While I can't spend too much on the printer, I have a lot of printing to do this quarter (60+ pages, 3x/week in one class alone) so I would like a printer with a lower cost per page/cartridges. I've seen lots of people recommending Brother printers, but the only one I can find in stock for delivery is the Brother MFC-L2710DW for $200, wondering if this is a good choice or if there is a better option for my needs?

Cost efficient printer

Nabbed a Brother MFC-7360n (made in 2012) for $40 from the guy who bought it new. Reliable and quick. What other printers would you consider solid workhorses?

..have to decide if a tray is worth $50 to me.  EDIT: just so you are aware, the first toner that came with the printer is all used up after a week - so they don't fill them full, a bit of a rip off

Easy setup, quick wifi and printing - no document tray for the manual feeder...
