 1) small in size as mentioned above ( but still large enough for reasonable use) 2) light weight 3) very slim profile 4) not "tactical" looking 5) US made This turns out to be harder than one might imagine. Knives tend to be too large, or too military looking for polite use, or most dreadfully made "offshore". Enter the "55". I have long been a fan of buck knives and have a deep respect for the fact that they manage to produce a high quality product in the US while keeping their prices very reasonable

 The good news is that the knife arrived and fits my parameters perfectly; it is small, light, handsome with brass bolsters and polished rose wood scales, but alas the blade was completely dull. I am not a stickler for the sharpness of a knife when it arrives, as I have high standards for sharpness and also understand that you need to be willing to work with a blade over its life. However the 55 that I receive appeared unfinished, the blade seems to have received the the first shaping grind, but none of the subsequent polishing or sharpening grinds, I had to work for 20 minutes on a grinding stone to get the primary bevel in place and another 10 minutes of work before it would cut paper. Once that happened the knife was perfect, I was just a bit surprised and disappointed that this one snuck out the door of the buck factory essentially as an unfinished item

 I wasn't too impressed with the factory edge, so I took an hour with some stones and strops and got it to shaving sharp. I wouldn't trust the lock to hold under great strain, but this knife isn't for those kinds of jobs. This is an opening packages, trimming loose threads, eating an apple, mortifying my girlfriend at a restaurant when I pull it out of my pocket to use in stead of the butter knife they gave me to cut my steak kind of knife. I like the knife, however fit and finish on the scales could be better. The blade arrived with a burr, almost seems like they didn't finish sharpening it.

 Although the blade has a little wobble side to side, the rest of the knife is well-crafted, and it is made in America.  This is a visual twin to the original, full-sized Buck Folding Hunter Model 110, which revolutionized the pocket knife world with its "lock-back." Most pocket knives before then were "slip joints" held open not by a lock, but merely by spring tension (like most Swiss Army knives) and could close accidentally on the fingers during use. The Buck Folding Hunter was a lot safer with its locking back

 It seems to sharpen up as easily and hold an edge as well as 1095 carbon steel, but has the rust resistance of a stainless.  The fit is top notch. There are no gaps between the backspring and liners. There's no blade wobble, and no gaps between the wooden scales and the bolsters

 It was what all the Chinese imports used back in the 90s. But Buck really executes it well. It seems to sharpen up as easily and hold an edge as well as 1095 carbon steel, but has the rust resistance of a stainless.  The fit is top notch

  The steel Buck uses 420 HC is really good, and I think especially so because Buck has got their heat-treating down pat. I've had 420 in other knives, and it was GARBAGE. It was what all the Chinese imports used back in the 90s. But Buck really executes it well

Great knife; a pocket-sized (and weighted) 110

 Like it's big brother, the 55 is superb workmanship, and incredibly sharp. It's very lightweight, but also striking in simplicity and beauty. I find myself not wanting to have this in my pocket everyday, but on occasion, so as not to age it too quickly, but then again, at only around $30, it's easily replaced. I can't say this any more positively than this: If you need a single blade, locking pocket knife, sharp enough to skin deer or whatever, buy this knife! You will love it!

 However, after receiving this knife, I had to review this one. I already have the Buck 110, and have used it in skinning deer, and I couldn't be happier. Superb quality and extremely sharp, but too big for a pocket, and I don't always want to wear the sheath. I was also looking for another pocket knife, but have been somewhat displeased with the stockmans I have, wanting and needing a locking pocket knife for safety
