 The corners look nice and punchy too, although some color fringing is visible, stopping down to f, 5.6 or f 8 yields a little extra brightness, but no other real improvements here. The lens stays this sharp down to f 22, where softness creeps in due to the physical effects of diffraction.  If you stop down only to f 11, this time, then diffraction will begin to soften your image and that's always the case on a camera with a sensor of this high resolution.  Unfortunately, well, as i mentioned the sensor on any 32.5 megapixel aps-c camera is extremely demanding. This 70-200 millimeter lens just about, gets away with it by the skin of its teeth. Although the performance at 200 millimeter leaves a little to be desired, let's move on now and look at distortion and vignetting back on a full-frame camera at 70 millimeter we see some noticeable barrel distortion and just a little vignetting or darkness in the corners

 It'S meant to have greatly improved image. Stabilization new coatings to reduce flaring, including a flooring coating on the front glass element to make it easier to clean and a nine-bladed aperture instead of just eight which might get you some more interesting sun stars, it also has improved weather, sealing supposedly improved image quality and It can focus more closely to your subject. Phew canon have been busy. It costs 1300 us dollars or 1300 pounds in the uk

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS 'II' USM lens review with samples (Full-frame & APS-C)

The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM is one of their best lenses. Splurge at little, you won't regret it, I promise =)

I am currently using an APS-C Canon DSLR.  I am looking to buy a zoom/telephoto lens since I don't currently own a lense in the longer focal length.  I am happy to buy used and have a max budget of around £600/$825.

I have narrowed it down to the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM and the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS ii USM lens.  

The condition of the lenses being equal if I buy used, the 70-200mm is about £120/$150 more expensive.  I intend to use it for punching into landscapes, wildlife and some sports.  

My main question is... Is the up in image quality and build quality of an L series lens worth the extra money? Or have I got it all wrong and there is a different lens I should be looking at?

Advice needed on Telephoto purchase

 The quality of the glass may be better, but in the end, i did not see a four hundred dollar difference (considering the cheaper zoom lens was $200 dollars). I found this lens great for portraiture, but it performed basically identically to my cheaper lenses with other subjects like flowers.  In conclusion, you get a little sharper results and MUCH BETTER build quality with this lens. Do you get your money's worth? I do not feel you do

 In my opinion, you could get just as good results with a general-purpose zoom lens- and this lens is not much faster than a regular zoom lens either. The lens hood wasn't that great either. It does its job, but it doesn't stay in place (it doesn't lock on). It's made of a great material inside though

Not a $600 'L' Difference

 Why bother spending more money for this lens? Well, firstly, although its not actually weather sealed the build quality of this lens is fantastic. It'S made of metal and looks beautiful. The zoom ring isn't very well damped, but it is very smooth to use on a crop sensor. Camera 70 millimeter is really quite telephoto, which means the focal range of this lens is not very convenient

 I need to use a shutter speed of about a two hundredth of a second to get sharp pictures with this lens, and this is a real pain if you're shooting in anything other than bright daylight. You'Ll have problems with blurriness, so this camera lens is perfect for anyone who needs telephoto pictures on sunny days and it's a good lens for anyone, who's obsessed with getting very high picture quality for a reasonable price. But the lack of image stabilization makes this a difficult lens to use on a cloudy day or if you're indoors. The maximum aperture of f/4 means you're, not really letting in a huge amount of light, even if this is a bit better than the cheaper lenses

 The focus ring is very smooth and well damped. The USM autofocus motor is quite fast, very quiet and fairly accurate. You can adjust the focus even an autofocus mode. There'S no way you could criticize the build quality of this lens

 It really is a joy to use the other reason to get an L lens instead of a cheaper one. Is the image quality? I love the pictures. This lens produces the colors and contrast really jump out at you. I can't believe how good they look there

NO IS...

I know at 200 to 300mm the image may be soft (especially on the corners) and I probably will not be completely satisfied, but maybe I can make up the difference in Photoshop. Overall, I am disappointed with the results I achieved with the "L" series lens (especially with the added costs) and will stay for now with the standard lens.

6 IS USM Lens, but after reading several reviews, decided to go with the 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM lens. Since most reviewers agreed the L series lens produces a better image at 200mm cropped to approximate a 300mm image, for only a little more I decided on the L lens. I really like the solid feel and construction of the lens; however, after shooting about a hundred images from my normal setup position at the lake, I was disappointed with the end results

It's good, but is it worth it?

 Although pixel-peepers may disagree. On the other hand, those folks don't really have a life. So accept the fact that there will ALWAYS be something better (and "better" and "best" are relative and continuously moving targets).  For the low price you're getting pro-level glass on the cheap, a proven track record, superior build, and great pictures

 If I'm at a sporting event I'll have the 70-200mm in the pack. It's all about what's appropriate to the circumstances.  Why am I telling you this? Because "best" is relative. Now, as for this lens: 70-200mm f/4 is good enough

 But I have a 24-105mm f/4 L, this 70-200mm f/4 L, and a 200mm f/2.8 L. Why? The 24mm prime is better than the wide end of the 24-105mm and the 200mm prime is better than the long end of the 70-200mm. The primes give me better picture quality and better low-light performance

Your results may vary

 (I wouldn't go into the technical aspects of it either, people more experienced and knowledgeable than me have done enough justice to it). The thing which makes or breaks the deal is whether or not this would you be your first purchase of a zoom lens or whether you are purchasing this as an upgrade from another consumer zoom. If this is the first zoom lens, then this is a no brainer. Agree, it's almost double the cost of other consumer zooms from canon (or sigma/tamaron), but do yourself a favor

But since I'm one of the few people who weren't actually thrilled by the lens (happy but not thrilled), I still decided to go ahead and put down my 2 cents.  Wait and save the money for this (or consider buying a used version, they usually sell for less than 500$), and you won't be disappointed! If you are considering this as an upgrade, think twice about it. I bought this as an upgrade from one of the sigma zooms and even though the autofocus/image quality of this is way superior, I just wasn't blown away. I eventually ended up selling this one and am now saving for the 70 -200 F4 L is (And contrary to popular belief, its not the same lens with IS added but a newer version of the glass as well)  To sum it up, it's still a great lens and definitely one of the cheapest L series lens. But do consider the IS version before buying this

A different take on this popular and over-reviewed lens ..

This is an amazing lens. There are some things I dont like but overall worth the money for what it can do.  Ok so Ill just say that the Canon 70-200mm f4 lens on the 5d mark ii is a fantastic alternative to the more expensive counterparts. It's extremely fast autofocus is quiet and accurate

You even have 2 settings to further improve its already-fast speed. Next, 70-200 is a huge amount of space to work with

 Not quite telephoto enough for wildlife shots or planets on a Canon 5d mark ii, but still a great range if you do weddings or sports, etc... This lens is also fantastic with a macro extension tube (but get the Canon tubes NEVER the cheap ones)

  Ok so its clean and sharp and fast on the 5d mark ii, but there are a couple things I dont like that aren't a big deal but remind me that this is the cheapest of the L series lenses. First, it doesn't seal as well as you'd expect from an L series lens when connecting to the body. There is a little tiny bit of play there that doesn't quite seem as 'weather-resistant' as they advertise. Again, maybe this is only because its the cheaper version

A taste of an L series without the price.

 If you need a lens that can do this, look to the f/2.8.  During the day, I do not regret not having the IS. If there is enough light, you can have a fast enough shutter not to worry about the shakiness

This is my main Telephoto lens. For the price, it is awesome. The L series glass is the best in the Canon line and this lens holds up. It takes great pictures and the autofocus is fast and precise

 At night you can have similar problems when shooting without a flash.  Overall: In the day: almost perfect. Sometimes I wish I had alittle more range, but those lenses are so much more expensive. At night, you can still get good images, but don't expect to replicate the performance you get in the day
