 This means that, even taking into consideration the lens's rather dark maximum aperture, it focuses silently, accurately, and almost instantaneously. You will have no trouble tracking and shooting birds and other moving subjects with this lens. There's one of Canon's neat control rings at the top of the lens, which has gentle clicks to it. You can customise it on your camera to perform various different actions, or even send your lens away to Canon to have that control ring de-clicked for a price

 Stop down to f11 to see even brightness across the image frame. Alright, let's take a look at close-up image quality now. Zoom in to 400mm, and the lens can focus as closely as 1m, treating you to some spectacular, almost macro photography images. Image quality at that close distance though is just okay, at both f8 or f11

 Okay, let's turn in-camera corrections off and look at distortion and vignetting. At 100mm, we see some noticeable pincushion distortion and darker corners at f5.6. Stop down to f8 or f11 though, and those corners quickly brighten up

 But if you can live with that, then a host of benefits will be your reward. Good build quality and a lightweight body, sharp image quality with lightning-fast autofocus and low-focus breathing, good contrast and a spectacularly close minimum focus distance. If you also take into account the lens's reasonable price and flexible zoom range, then you can't really go wrong. It's a surprisingly accomplished lens, really, and if you can look beyond its dark aperture, it does come highly recommended

My pictures appeared smudged, when I took my first photo- also missing items in the box

 So here's my side-on test view of Brighton Pier from about 200m away, with the camera angled so that details run into the corners. And now at 400mm where again there's essentially no breathing so again no change in magnification as you focus. This is good news for anyone using the lens for videography or indeed when manually focusing stills especially in a magnified view. The lens also appeared to be mostly parfocal in my tests meaning it didn't change focus as you zoom through the range so all in all very well behaved in these regards

 It covers a useful range that's ideal for sports and wildlife, distant portraiture as well as compressed landscape and urban views. The optical quality is excellent for the money with sharp results across the frame near and far and at the maximum albeit modest apertures. Now Canon's kept the price, size and weight low by deploying a fairly dim f5.6-8 aperture which means you're never going to achieve much blurring unless you're very close to the subject and the background is very distant

Not as good as you’d expect

 And even though it is stupid windy, I'm going to try to get some pictures of some birds today. I was going to take you guys with me around the lake and vlog in my kind of typical fashion and kind of walk you through what I'm doing and what I think of this out in the field but it's just too windy. Right off the bat I can tell you that this R5 with the 100-400 and the teleconverter feels about the same weight, maybe even lighter than the 500 with the 2x on it which that's interesting. The 1-400 alone without the teleconverter is by far the lightest telephoto lens that I've ever used and so far I'm not going to make like any profound statements or anything but so far I'm preliminarily feeling like this could become my number one recommendation for budget-friendly intro wildlife lens

 It's something that you could do and you can get okay results again, if you understand the limitations and the abilities of a teleconverter. But just do know that you can get teleconverters. They both work for this, for the one to 400. The different, the other thing to consider though, is those teleconverters, the RF teleconverters are expensive

 You know, you're talking like they're almost the same price as this lens, you know, four or five, $600 is what you're looking at. And that's, you know, that's the majority of what this lens costs. So and for that price, just get this. You know, this is my 800

 Right off the bat I can tell you that this R5 with the 100-400 and the teleconverter feels about the same weight, maybe even lighter than the 500 with the 2x on it which that's interesting. CANON RF 100-400 For WILDLIFE & LANDSCAPE Photography: Is It TOO CHEAP To Be Any Good?

  Another area where I’m impressed with the new RF 100-400 is with the image stabilization. I’m finding that it is noticeably better than that of the Sigma. I was able to get shots at 400mm and 1/30s without too much trouble where I was really struggling to get usable shots with the Sigma at the same speed.  From my initial outings with the lens I am finding the in the center of the frame the image quality at 400mm and f/8 (wide open) is pretty good and I don’t think I’ll have any problems being happy with the results
