 But honestly, we've never used that feature because the camera's actually really good at efficiently storing the footage. And one of the biggest things we got spoiled by with the C100 was the introduction of Canon's dual pixel autofocus. This is one of the first cameras to have it, and let's just say it's really hard to pull focus manually after you've been using Canon's dual pixel autofocus for a while. Now I know I probably sound like a Canon fanboy when I talk about the autofocus, but I go to NAB and Cinegear every year, and I'm always interested to visit the other camera company's booths that are sporting their new autofocus or their better autofocus, and I usually try them all or I have them demonstrate them to me, and they're either not very good or they're just subpar

 It comes with two XLR ports, which deliver high quality sound. Now, we were using DSLRs before we got the C100, so we always had to either use the microphone jack or we had to record external audio, which we had to sync later, and both of them didn't give us the best results. And now, after shooting with XLRs built in with the camera, it's really hard to go back to anything else. Now, it may not seem like a big or important feature considering that the camera doesn't shoot 4K, but since audio is so insanely important, it really is a good feature

Looking for mid-ranged camera

 The AVCHD, the image you get off the camera is fantastic, but you can record all day long. You know, the AVCHD codec is going to really give you those small file sizes. The built-in ND filters are fantastic. If you, me, any photographer, any videographer had our choice, you'd have them on every camera that you use

 If you don't, you could run into some issues in grading. But ask yourself this question, what are you going to use it for? For me, I knew I wanted to use it for interviews, the interview setting indoors, the kind of work that I do, and on-camera stuff for myself, and that kind of thing. So interviews, I'm primarily in an indoor setting, for the most part, where I'm going to control the lighting completely and make sure I've got this exposure dialed in exactly where I want it, everything focused where you want it. And I just wanted this camera for that purpose, for that image quality, those skin tones, and the way that Canon Cinema Line spits out the image

Canon c100 mark 1: Review

Hey reddit!

I'm looking to buy a used camera body in the $1500 - $1700 price range. Obviously cheaper is fine, but I don't expect to find what I'm looking for for a lower price. 

I currently use a GH4 and a 5D Mk IV, with an adapter on the GH4 for EF/EF-S lenses. I used to shoot mostly photography, but nowadays it's about 70% video 30% photo. I have a lot of EF and EF-S lenses, and I like being able to swap out lenses. I'm not against buying another speedbooster/adapter.

I shoot skate videos and documentaries usually, so I'm working in less than ideal lighting conditions, so I need a camera with good low light performance, preferably something at least comparable to that of my 5D Mk IV. Often I have to travel light, so something that isn't super bulky would be a plus. I usually shoot in 1080p/60fps, 4k capabilities would be nice but it really isn't that important to me.

I do a lot of handheld shooting, so in body stabilization of some kind would be great. A quick push-button autofocus is EXTREMELY useful for me, but continuous AF a little less so. One last thing I need in a camera is an articulating screen! I know I can just use a monitor, but I need a run and gun camera that I can throw a lens and shotgun mic on and be ready to go.

What camera is right for me?

 You got good audio settings. The preamps in this are actually pretty good. And if you don't have that, then you even have two microphones right here in the front. Also having the side handle just gives you that stability if you're running and you can start and stop right there and have a few adjustments on the handle as well

What Camera to get for under $4000

 And if you're okay with 1080p, it is such a pleasure to use. You just grab it and go. You have everything you need. It's a cinema camera with ND filters and gives you a pretty good image even here seven years after the original release

 I found setting Caucasian skin to around 65 to 70 worked well for YDR and cinema. In the low light department, things are okay, but not great. After testing each setting, I would personally avoid going over 3,200. That said, the higher ISO levels don't have the ugliest noise I've ever seen and for best image quality and dynamic range possible, I would stick to 850 ISO as that is the native setting

 So take that Sony FX6 audio quality is fine, but won't be as good as a dedicated external recorder. Next up, we have a feature that was very rare back when this camera came out and that is pretty darn good autofocus for video. The EOS mode is a hard pass for me, way too crunchy and completely destroys your highlights and shadows even when exposing correctly. EOS picture profile aside, I found slightly overexposing the image work best for cinema and YDR

 This makes holding the camera in front of you easier and with the help of the removable top and side handle, customizing your camera setup is easy and just feels good to use. The C100 Mark II has a really, really rugged flip out screen that flips all the way out unlike the Mark I and it has an improved display. So we're now using an OLED and it looks really good even here in 2021 and I absolutely love the addition of the joystick and the buttons below the monitor. I would love to see this added to more cameras in the future

$1500 Canon Cinema Camera! C100 Mark II Review

**BACKGROUND:** About a year ago I made the call to jump my carreer as a photographer for electric engineering studies. For this summer though, I've agreed to take on a few video-gigs from a couple of old clients. Problem is: I don't really have that much gear left, since I sold most of it when deciding to shift carreers. I only kept one 5D mkIV and some L-glass, a bit of lighting and a few microphones.

**TYPE OF WORK:** The gigs I've got lined up are a bunch of 3 minute mini-docs for some NGOs, as well as a couple of corporate recruitment videos. They're all pretty much gonna be two-camera talking heads and B-roll. I'll be a one man army so workflow and reliability is really important. I don't particulary enjoy the workflow of the mkIV for video, so that'll be my b-camera. The question is what I should get for an A-cam. I want to get a reliable run and gun, shoulder rig setup with a NTG3 shotgun going straight into the camera.

**BUDGET:** My idea is to buy some used gear and sell it by the end of the summer for a minimum loss. I don't want to tie up too much money though. Preferably not more than $2000-$4000 in total (including media, batteries, monitor (if needed) and a shoulder rig). It's also important that the used price is fairly stable, so I won't make a huge loss when selling it again in September.

**WHAT I'M THINKING ABOUT:** I'm really gravitating towards a *C100 Mk II* because of the reliability, long battery life, built-in NDs, efficient codec, and dual XLRs. Or is that absolutely nuts in 2021? Would I be missing out not going for something with a more modern sensor such as a *BMPCC 6K* or *Z-CAM E2 S6*? I don't mind the 1080 resolution as *none of my clients have asked for 4K*. I expect lighting situations  to be pretty rough however, and I know I make mistakes under stress (who doesn't?), so having a higher bitrate and better low-light performance wouldn't suck. But having a rock solid run and gun setup that just works and doesn't require too much attention and battery/media swaps all the time is also worth soo much to me. What would you people get if you were in my shoes?

Is a C100 mkII absolutely nuts in 2021?

Hello all, I'm fresh out of film school and as of now I'd like to make documentaries.

I've saved up for a camera and have been doing research for months but I can't make a choice because I'll be putting all my money in it and don't want to fuck it up. At first I got my eyes on the canon r6. Then I thought of the a7s III but i didn't have enough money (i still don't exactly, but i've saved more since then). 

I found that it boils down to needs (and means) so individual questions and answer can only go so far. And I don't necessarily trust youtubers' demos. 

So I think the best thing is to tell you a bit about me and you might be able to tell me which camera you think is the best choice, or if you think I'm looking in the wrong place.

* **Use**  
That camera will virtually exclusively be used for documentary, thus using natural light, day or night. I'd be shooting in a hot and not politically not very stable country. I want to film intimate things, mostly from friends and family at the moment. Therefore I want to be as discreet and mobile as possible. I will not be buying a rig, matt box or else, if I can have only the camera and mic in hands, I'll have it that way. Are the R6's ibis and af truly better than the sony's or is it just good marketing?  

* **Sound**  
Since I would be shooting solo, all the shooting sound would be from a mic that's linked to the camera. The r6 only has a jack plug, whereas the sony has an XLR one. From what I understand, mics with XLR plug allow for better quality. However, a sound engineer friend told me that from my shooting setting, an XLR mic wouldn't bring that much more to the table. But if it's still bringing more i'm interested, so what kind of difference are we talking? (He also recommended the bmpcc 6k because of its double xlr input, which would allow to have a richer sound  material for post. But from what I saw it wouldn't work for me because it'd require a focus puller, rig, etc... Its footage on youtube is amazing though)

* **Technicality and image ability**  
I'm more interested in the mise-en-scène part of filmmaking so I'm not that knowledgeable on a technical level. It's best for me if the camera is not too hard to understand / get used to, because I also think that it's not necessarily the camera that makes your image great but what you make of it. I like film, i don't need the sharpest image ever. as long as it can be beautiful i'm fine with it. I do think that dynamic range has its importance? But again I don't master that field. So if editing files can not be headache that's a plus!  

* **Budget**  
 If i buy the a7s III right now, i'll have only money for the camera (body+24-105mm) and will have to wait to save more for a mic, a tripod, etc. if I choose the r6 I can get myself the whole pack and be good to go. But i'd be using this equipment for years so I don't mind waiting a little more. If I end up choosing the more expensive camera, is buying a used one worth the saved money?

Since I would be shooting solo, all the shooting sound would be from a mic that&#39;s linked to the camera. The r6 only has a jack plug, whereas the sony has an XLR one. From what I understand, mics with XLR plug allow for better quality. However, a sound engineer friend told me that from my shooting setting, an XLR mic wouldn&#39;t bring that much more to the table. But if it&#39;s still bringing more i&#39;m interested, so what kind of difference are we talking? (He also recommended the bmpcc 6k because of its double xlr input, which would allow to have a richer sound material for post. But from what I saw it wouldn&#39;t work for me because it&#39;d require a focus puller, rig, etc... Its footage on youtube is amazing though)

I&#39;m more interested in the mise-en-scène part of filmmaking so I&#39;m not that knowledgeable on a technical level. It&#39;s best for me if the camera is not too hard to understand / get used to, because I also think that it&#39;s not necessarily the camera that makes your image great but what you make of it. I like film, i don&#39;t need the sharpest image ever. as long as it can be beautiful i&#39;m fine with it. I do think that dynamic range has its importance? But again I don&#39;t master that field. So if editing files can not be headache that&#39;s a plus!

If i buy the a7s III right now, i&#39;ll have only money for the camera (body+24-105mm) and will have to wait to save more for a mic, a tripod, etc. if I choose the r6 I can get myself the whole pack and be good to go. But i&#39;d be using this equipment for years so I don&#39;t mind waiting a little more. If I end up choosing the more expensive camera, is buying a used one worth the saved money?

Please help me make an important decision.

I’ve been using a Canon 6d and t3i, recently bought a c100 mark ii and I love it. I bought it on eBay in good condition for ~$1800. The image is great, built in ND filters are an eye opener, and the battery life and file sizes perfect for the work I do.

Hi! For the last few years I've been using a canon 5d mk3 for my video projects. It has served me pretty well, but it's time to get a new camera capable of 4k recording with autofocus. With the intention of keep using my canon gear (mostly lenses) I've been looking at Canon's catalog in search for a replacement. However, I cannot afford a R5 camera, my budget is €1500 (around $1800). Would a second hand 5D mk4 worth that price in 2021? Considering I'm only interested in video recording and image quality, what alternatives do you recommend me? Would a 90D do the trick? Maybe wait for an EOS RP upgrade? Should I forget about Canon and look other brands?
