Which Bike? - Weekly Scheduled Discussion

Newb here. Was ready to drop $3500 on a “good bike” till some other comments got me thinking differently. I think want to start with a Kona Rove $950 base model and see what I like and don’t like. Sell it after I ride at least 1 season on it to know what I like in a bike.

What other bike should I look at? I don’t  want to get stuck in analysis paralysis and just get out there and ride. Learn, upgrade, rinse and repeat.

First gravel bike question?

Hi guys, I’m looking to buy a versatile road bike that can fit 30mm or more for off road terrain or light snow during winter season. My budget is around 6000-7000 CAD so around 5.5k usd. I can’t decide with bike will fit my needs. 

I’m thinking about the:

- Super Six Evo Ultegra or etap version 
- Specialize aethos Rival eTap AXS
- Specialize tarmac sl7
- bmc?

Road/Gravel bike

My days of trying to go fast are behind me. I’m either commuting to work (~20 miles/day, 80% paved trail in poor repair, 20% pothole city streets), tooling around the neighborhood and safe trails with my kids (one of whom is still in a Burley Bee for a year or two), or, getting out on the weekends to go explore on my own - riding road to get to gravel towpath or hard pack single track in the trees. I love to be off road but I’m not trying to ace any technical stuff.  When I’m lucky abs have the time I’ll do a long charity ride kind of thing here or there.  I idly daydream about doing some light touring - say, the C&amp;O/Allegheny DC-Pittsburgh one summer.  I want reasonable versatility, comfort, and stability.  I don’t especially care about speed; I just don’t want to die entirely on hills (I’m in reasonable shape so I don’t mind the workout.)  More upright than aero, just not “beach cruiser on the boardwalk” upright.  In the past I rode a carbon Look 585 for years but honestly it was always more bike and more athleticism than I had to match it and I’m not sure I ever felt confident enough on it.  Felt too twitchy to me. I commute now on a 2013 Specialized Tricross that I put 38mm tires on.  I know the waits are long right now, and it’s so hard to even get to try something out.  But based on reading here and poking around on YouTube videos, I’m sort of eyeing an All City Space Horse or a Surly Midnight Special.  I’ve been told Jamis Renegade maybe. I’ll admit there’s a lot I don’t understand about geometry, and steel sounds interesting to me but I don’t necessarily have a good hard fact basis for why. Any ideas? Am I aiming for a unicorn? Barking up the wrong tree? Appreciate any guidance.
