The Fezzari Shafer AL is the least expensive model in the brand's line of Shafer gravel bikes, and the only one that is built around an aluminum frame. This entry-level bike has a sleek design and comes equipped with budget-friendly but quality components that are ready to get out and explore the back roads straight out of the box. The moderate gravel geometry is quite easy to get along with, and while it doesn't necessarily feel racy, it performs admirably on both the climbs and descents. With a surprisingly light weight &#40;for an aluminum framed model&#41; of 21 lbs and 11 oz and a stiff aluminum frame paired with a rigid carbon fork, the Shafer AL feels responsive and efficient, and it is best suited to smooth gravel, pavement, and the mellowest of singletrack trails. While it may not have as many accessory mounts as some of the other models we tested, we feel it is still quite versatile and could handle everything from casual gravel rides with friends, jumping into some gravel events, commuting, road riding, and even bikepacking with frame, handlebar, and seat-mounted bags.  
While it's hard to argue with the value proposition of the Shafer AL, we do have a few nits to pick. It is a rigid framed bike, and, not surprisingly, we found it to be a bit harsh over some of the rough gravel we often encountered while testing. We also found the relatively slick stock tires to offer less cornering, braking, and climbing traction than we would have liked, and the thin bar tape wasn't the most comfortable on the hands. It also has fewer accessory mounts than many other models we've tested, limiting your options for attaching gear to your bike, comparatively. That said, we feel this is a great option for riders getting into the sport that won't break the bank.

 We're running a larger offset at 50 millimeters on the fork and that was a design decision that we made in order to keep that trail number. Um, you know it's really technical. Uh, you know, with some of that terminology, it's basically that contact patch of that tire where that's sitting under that under that wheel by. you know Past, they have the typical round seat clamps that if you over tighten them or things like that, it would actually break the seat post

 Um, with that that allows that front end to stay stable as the roads get rough and and things get, uh, you know, maybe you're on gravel road or getting into a little single track, you still have that front end stability. But we also wanted to address with that slacker head tube angle, how do we keep the slow speed turning quick? And that was with our fork offset. We're running a larger offset at 50 millimeters on the fork and that was a design decision that we made in order to keep that trail number. Um, you know it's really technical

 And that's custom quality. Direct through our 23-point custom setup that I mentioned a little bit earlier, we fit the bike to each individual rider. So for instance, if you're five foot ten and have a 31 31 inch inseam, the next rider is 5 foot 10, have a 35 inch inseam, and they're going to need a different stem length or crank length or or bar width or something like that to fit their proportions to their body size. Instead of taking that medium or large size frame and just thinking, here's what comes on the bike

Gravel Newbie: Which bikes to consider for &lt; $2500? Important component considerations? (I'm familiar with MTB)

 The chainstays are still pretty short at 430 millimeters, and that's despite having tire clearance for 700 by 50 mil Knobbies front and rear. As far as the bottom bracket goes, you get a pretty generous 77 mils of drop, so you have a nice low center of gravity again for nice stability. So while you do have that extra stability from the longer wheelbase and that longer front center, you can still steer the front end around pretty easily thanks to that sort of quicker geometry up front. Another thing that's nice about that longer front end is if toe overlap is something that really bothers you, this one has very little of it, particularly given how it has bigger tires

 A lot of carbon frames are claimed to be you know, they called monocot construction basically one piece. However, in almost every one of those cases, what you have is a one piece front triangle that's bonded to separate chainstays and seat stays in the case of the visari. However, the entire frame really is made as one piece. It's a true monocoque according to Fizzari

 There's another water bottle mount underneath the down tube. You've got top tube feedback mounts. You've got another set of mounts up here for a repair kit front and rear fender mounts. You also have anything mounts on each fork blade, so there's plenty of carrying capacity

 The front center is a lot longer, the top tube's longer, the stem is shorter, and and the benefits of that setup are just like what you have with other gravel bikes that use that sort of new school geometry. By pushing that front wheel further out in front of you, you have a little bit more stability. you can really kind of charge and push the butt, push the front of the bike through slippery corners. It's a lot more confidence inspiring when things get really slippery, especially when things get steep out back

Started road cycling in 2017 - and I was really into it, going fast, and getting PBs on strava, ettc

Picked up my gravel bike with the intent of using it for off road only, right before the first locdowns started.  Then it turned into using it as my all rounder and getting road wheels to swap - now I just use it for evertything with gravel set up 

PROS

   Bigger tires means I don't have a mini heart attack when debris comes up, pot holes, storm grates, big sticks - take your pick - not always possible to manuver around  on narrow roads with passing traffic

   Relaxed geomotry means Im more comfortable and less sore doing longer rides

Bigger tires again; also reduces the risk of a puntcure tenfold - and i HATE punctures

I can do hybrid rirdes, theres one dirt, and one gravel trail very close to me, so I can add up to 20 miles of off road riding to my road routes if I want to do a big ride

   My road bike sits in my basement on the stationary trainer and I dont have to move shit around from the grage to the trainer,  or swap tires when I can only do an indoor session, ableit because of the weather or I'm too busy

   Gravel bikes just look dope

   I loose two MPH or so?  Which is neglible, because I dont really care about that.  I ride to stay in shape, and because I love it - I dont do competitive road racing, and If I wanna do a group ride I can always just go down to a group C+ or find one that does trails anyway

Anyone else use their gravel bike as their primary road bike too?

 Of course, the clutched rear derailleur keeps things quiet on even the roughest terrain.

Sizing: I’m 5’11” and found the medium to be a good fit using a 110mm stem. I think a large would be better with a 90mm stem and more inline with how Fezzari typically recommends.
