New user, posting my setup. I'm not a dealer, just a long time vinyl collector. Let me know if anyone has questions or comments on my setup. I've got a weekly YouTube channel but I thought I'd start out by sharing my setup first :)

 There's a lot of slack in the lever, it bounces the arm if you lift it too quickly and the tonearm safety latch feels like its going to break off every time I use it.  My last turntable was a Pro-ject Essential III and even though the body of this Fluance is much more substantial, the entire experience of lowering the needle with the tonearm lever on the Pro-ject was more solid and satisfying, whereas the RT85 feels flimsy and crappy.  The Ortofon 2m Blue looks cool, but to be honest, for a $250 cartridge it doesn't really sound much better to me than the OM10 on my Pro-ject, which didn't sound much better to me than the ADC QLM32 Mrk III on my Hitachi HT-324 from the 80s. I told you I'm not an audiophile

I am not an audiophile, just a guy who likes to listen to records. I bought the white Fluance RT85 because of the positive reviews and because it looked cool with its acrylic platter, etc. I have owned many different turntables and record players over the years, but this one is the most expensive.  Overall it's an okay turntable, but that's probably as far as I would go with it

 Colored vinyl really pops on the white, though the visual aesthetic proves more impressive than actually using it.  The entire tonearm mechanism feels super cheap. The tonearm lever, stand and safety latch actually feels like something you'd find on a cheapo plastic portable record player like a Crosley. Maybe I got a bad one, but that's my honest opinion

My personal preference is a decent turntable (doesn't need to have the absolute best quality) but I would definitely like to upgrade down the line, especially when it comes to the cartridge and stylus. 

My other choices include the Fluance RT85 and Rega Planar 1. 

Also, is a built-in phono stage good? To me it seems it can save more space by having in built in, but several local record store owners advised me to get a separate preamp since a built in phono stage would be "shitty".

Best choice for a &lt;500 USD beginner turntable?

I am updating my original review. I have since listened to a lot more material and even got a second preamp with capacitance control to try to try to further improve the sound. The Fluance with the Ortofon blue is still bright sounding compared to both my Shure V15 Type IV and compared to CDs of the same albums. The bright sound does give you more presence, but it can be harsh on cymbals etc

 Not recommended for DJ or rough handling use.  Overall, remember you're getting both a turntable and good cartridge for $500 so you can't complain too much. The sound quality is good but not up there with the multi-$k esoteric ones. The only reason I bought this turntable was because I needed a removable headshell for testing purposes and this turntable is the only one I found with a belt drive, which is the best for hifi

 Less than 1 hour after you open the box, you're listening to records. - Easy to change headshells with a relatively strong screw-on connection. - Ortofon 2M Blue cartridge has excellent sound. - 33/45 switch and a quality belt-drive system for very good hifi sound

With the very entry level Rega stuff you’re paying a ton for the brand name, but you’re getting cheap cart with a piece of junk conical stylus, almost identical to the one you’d find on a $140 Crosley. Take a look at the Fluance RT85 or a U-Turn Orbit Special as a far superior alternative.

As for the rest: I’d go with a Denon PMA-600NE and a set of speakers in the $500-600 range like the Ascend CMT-340 SE, Elac DBR62, Triangle Borea BR03 (might be on discount still), or Wharfedale Diamond 12.2.

For streaming you can add a second hand Chromecast Audio and connect it to the Denon over a mini-Toslink cable.

I don’t have experience with this or with the Sonos Amp, but i really like other Sonos stuff i do have. You could check out a pair of Sonos Fives. They can act as speakers, amp, and streaming source. They’re about $500 each but will do the job of three of your separates. You’ll have to see if their inputs will work for you though.

I’ve since received some records I’d love to actually listen to, and I thought it’d be a good time to actually build out a setup for our small living room/listening area. The house is open floor plan but not huge (3 bedrooms, one level).

Budget: $1500-$2000 (Was thinking 500ish for an amp/streaming unit, 500ish for a turntable, 500ish for speakers, but maybe that balance isn’t right).

Live in the Bay Area, so can shop anywhere online obviously or locally.

So, build me a setup? Or point me in the right direction? (I read the sidebar and tried to include as much info as possible, but please let me know if I did any of this wrong).

**What’s important to me:**
-Playing records, naturally
-AirPlay 2 so I can still quickly stream Tidal/Apple Music from my iPhone through whatever setup I end up with (I don’t anticipate having a HUGE record collection)
-As few boxes/clutter as possible
-No fussy apps/remotes I need to mess with all the time
-Don’t need anything incredibly LOUD. I have young kids.
-Something with a headphone input (see above re: kids)
-Prefer quality investment over getting the cheapest available solution. Don’t want to spend a ton more energy upgrading/tinkering down the line. Most of my energy goes into making music so I want the listening end of it to be more relaxing than making it into a project.

**Nice to haves:**
-lossless digital playback (I own some favorite albums in lossless format)
-center channel/sound bar, something I can connect to my Samsung 50” The Frame (2020) TV. My wife has a hard time understanding dialogue in shows/movies and I feel like some clarity in the center will really help. Units that have an HDMI IN (ARC?) seem like  they fit the bill in terms of support.
-Ideally as much of it in white/walnut/silver as possible (that’s the vibe of the room)

 Some people complained the Fluance suitable preamp is not of fine quality. Installed much better praised Nobsound T3 MM Phono Preamp. Same thing, expect to experience notable static noise in full silence before playing a record. That would be the first thing to improve on this tunable
