I haven’t used a sports watch before, and as well as using it for triathlon-specific training, I’d like to use it for the other sports which I usually partake in (football, tennis, weight training etc), and general day-to-day activities. Looking online, it appears the Garmin Forerunner 945 is my best bet.

In a Garmin subreddit you are bound to get a lot of people preferring Garmin. I have newer used a Fitbit product but I really like my Garmin Forerunner 945 LTE

Totally depends on your goals. Fitbit is a lifestyle watch. Are you interested in tracking steps, stairs, and getting positive feedback from just moving around? Stick with Fitbit. If your a 10k steps a day person, Fitbit has your back. 

Are you an athlete that wants quantifiable, actionable training data, accurate activity (GPS) and heartrate tracking including the use of more advanced sensors like power meters, running dynamics, etc? Do you not even know or care how many steps you take a day, but really want to shave 2 minutes off your half marathon time or want to get your next 100 mile bike ride under 5 hours? Then you want a garmin, or Coros, or Polar. Fitbit wouldn’t even be a consideration

I was a Fitbit User over 4 years. 3 years with a charge 2 and 1 year with a versa 2. In this time they have not added a simple feature to see how many runs/kilometers I had this week/month/year. I think this tells stories about how serious they take fitness. In my opinion their focus is on livestyle and health.

I do love the Fitbit app!! But after seeing the pathetic quality imo from the Fitbit charge HR to the Fitbit versa 3, am swaying to garmin for my next watch. Hopefully a new more accurate venu comes out :( I love the analytic snapshots I see from Garmin pages and YouTube vids

I got a Fenix 6 half price at a sale and loce the thing.. better than my 'older fitbit' but im actually impressed with it. Battery is great, lots of stats and custom stuff.

When my Fitbit Ionic died for the 2nd time, I started using my wife's old vivoactive 4 (I bought her a Descent mk2s fir diving). The garmin is a great quality watch, but in my opinion is let down by the app. Its just not user friendly, intuitive or motivational. Auto activity detect of exercise is WAY better too. Garmin or Fitbit?

 We run to get away from the world, right? (I know you can turn notifications on and off, but I am constantly turning off notifications Sunday morning when I go to Church and discover they are still turned off next Thursday.)  Do bear in mind that you pay a monthly fee to Garmin for this. It is $12 a month in Canada. The peace of mind is worth it to me

 I don't listen to music when I run but did test this feature as described below.  I use Training Peaks, and the watch seamlessly integrates with TP. I don’t use Strava but assume Garmin works with a popular platform like Strava.  My other running watches are a Suunto Peak 9 and a Coros Pace 2

 Garmins marketing is based on fear of missing out, so they make sure their devices have the longest feature list. Not all of these features are usefull or work very well. But in general, they are good devices for tracking (sport)activities as long as you take all the data it produces with a grain of salt.

I moved from a FitBit to a Garmin. I went from having to charge every other day at the end to charging about once a week, although charging does take 2+ hours. Sleep tracking isn't quite as good, but I find other metrics like body battery make up for it. My two gripes with it with regards to overall fitness are that it follows outdated American Heart Association advice (at least 10 minutes above a certain heart rate before an activity "counts" to activity minutes) and that the automatic tracking is useless. I used to get all kinds of heart points for things I never would have tracked with FitBit that I don't get from Garmin. I've never had it automatically detect a walk either. But I'm good about tracking my activities so it's not a show stopper for me. Tracking activities works so much better and it is much more accurate for most things than FitBit. Would definitely go Garmin again!

If this was another Apple watch vs Garmin comparison, I woulda said, as always, that it's totally subjective. But here there's not much of a comparison, Garmin is way superior if you're interested in fitness features. Here's why:

1. As others already said, Fitbit now requires a subscription to access some of their health and wellness data. Garmin does offer a subscription but that's only to enable connectivity on certain devices like inreach and 945LTE. You don't have to pay to gain access to any fitness or wellness data.

2. Garmin gathers better data hands down, both when it comes to quality and quantity. You get things from lactate threshold to aerobic anaerobic effects and training benefits, no Fitbit that I'm aware of has that. Plus Garmin's OHR sensors, while by no means perfect, are just way better than Fitbit's. In the words of DC Rainmaker, HR data from the Fitbit sense for example, is a dumpster fire. Since most measurements and insights you get from just about any tracker are based on HR, Fitbit's are just way less meaningful in general.

3. Unlike Fitbits, you can connect almost any Garmin watch to chest straps, giving you better yet HR data. Plus many models can also pair with running dynamics pods to provide more accurate cadence, stride length and pace readings, in addition to extras like vertical oscillation, running power, and way more. You can even pair external cycling speed and cadence sensors, muscle oxygen sensors, and more.

4. While Fitbits offer more battery life than an Apple or Samsung watch, they still can't compete with Garmin here (except maybe venu series). Most reviews complain that Fitbit battery life estimates are very optimistic, and reality is usually 2 days short of what the company claims (DC Rainmaker review of the charge 5). And while Garmin also focuses on best case scenarios in advertising, battery life is in general much better. I was getting 4 days out of my vivoactive 3 back in the day, and I get 7-10 days out of my Fenix 6X both with heavy use.

5. Choice. There are many Fitbit models, but they mostly appeal to the same kind of user. Meanwhile, just the fenix series offers a model for almost everyone. You also have vivoactive and venu series for the average health conscious person, and forerunners for endurance and cardio athletes.

6. Garmins last longer and hold their value much much better. I sold my VA3 for a loss of about 70 bucks after a year of use. I sold my Fenix 5X for a loss of 150 bucks after close to 2 years (tho I'll admit both were bought on sale). Good luck doing that with a versa.

My Fitbit was working fine, the brightness just dimmed so much that I can only see a little in pitch dark. Out of warranty so Fitbit said they can't do anything. I've been using Fitbits for last four years and now thinking about abandoning the ship.

To the guys n gals who have used both - Is Garmin better than Fitbit? I have heard the sleep monitoring isn't as good as Fitbit. What better things I can get in Garmin that I can't in Fitbit. <div class="md"><p>My Fitbit was working fine, the brightness just dimmed so much that I can only see a little in pitch dark. Out of warranty so Fitbit said they can&#39;t do anything. I&#39;ve been using Fitbits for last four years and now thinking about abandoning the ship.</p>

<p>To the guys n gals who have used both - Is Garmin better than Fitbit? I have heard the sleep monitoring isn&#39;t as good as Fitbit. What better things I can get in Garmin that I can&#39;t in Fitbit. Does Garmin too lure you to subscriptions? My requirement is everyday tracking amd my workouts, not trying for ironman yet. </p>

Enough thinking, I'm asking this - Fitbit or Garmin?

 Additionally, I expected a more seemless integration with other Garmin devices. Trying to get this to send HB info to my Edge 830 bike computer was not intuitive and I feel like they missed an opportunity for a seemless experience. I should be able to hit start on one and have everything sync up. In all, I have a lot more heartbeat data than I did before, but for this price I expected more

Does anybody actually wear a watch into the water?

Curious about what models, and what experiences people have had in chlorine or salt water.

Did your watch function just fine? Could you actually read the watch underwater? Did it die? Did it rust? Do you wear a watch regularly in the water or just when you forget to take it off?

Anything you can share about using a watch in real water conditions would be interesting.
