 So who would I recommend this watch for pretty much any active consumer. The waterproof design, long battery life, and multiple sport profiles also make it a better value than the Fitbit surge. And while it is fully capable of tracking, running, cycling, and swimming I Wouldn't recommend it for dedicated runners and triathletes because it is missing some more advanced features. The vivoactive HR isn't like many of garments other products. It's not just for athletes, but rather anyone who loves the outdoors and being active. That's because it's not designed for a specific sport. The $250 watch seems to have it all

 Although the watch is waterproof up to 50 meters, which I do like. The heart rate sensor is also good, but it's not perfect and can fluctuate when doing fast interval workouts. I Also experienced occasional hiccups with syncing and Bluetooth connection to my Android phone. The connection problems weren't as frequent as with the original Vivoactive, but it's still an area where Garmin needs to improve

Running watches for the recreational runner - are they needed?

 And generally it does work that way. But sometimes not. Sometimes you'll complete a week with over 75,000 steps and find yourself enrolled in a zero step challenge group the next week, or you'll complete a week with over 50,000 steps and find yourself dropped to a 20,000 or 40,000 step group. A call to Garmin support elicits the representative's amazement and bewilderment, but despite claims it's only happening with your account, inexplicable, shouldn't happen again and is irreparable, other users on Garmin Connect will correspond with you and confirm the same has happened to them--and the proof is in your competitors in the 20,000 step challenge group who are racking up over 100,000 steps for the week; those people, you can be sure, did not register fewer than 25,000 steps in the prior week

 But the next day, it might work. Inconsistency is not motivational; it's demotivating.  2. The watch connects to Garmin's screwy server through your cell phone, where it stores your activity

 Based on how many steps you took last week, it drops you into a weekly challenge group. For instance, if you walked 40,000-44,999 steps in your first week, then you'll be placed into a competition with strangers who have been similarly active. It's a good idea. It motivates you to push yourself to at least beat out the bums who are as wimpy as me

Whenever you take a walk, hike, run, etc., the GPS feature of the watch (unless you've switched it off) will start tracking you so that when you later sync with your phone/Connect Web site, you'll see the activity (the header of the activity is actually location+activity, for example "New York City running") along with a map of the ground or water you covered. In practice, this works sometimes but other times you'll find your activity labeled without the location name; in those instances, you'll find there's no map to review either

Conceptually great, but a poorly engineered implementation

I have been using a Garmin Vivoactive 3 for several years and was quite happy with it, but thought for my birthday I would wish for a TicWatch Pro 3 GPS as I wanted to try out Google wear with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 4100 processor. I also considered the Samsung Galaxy Watch3, but in the end, I decided to support the underdog Mobvoi as the reviews were good and it was less cluttered with Samsung apps.

 We have now had them for a week and I will update this review if need be. I use mine to track steps, biking and snowboarding next season. The built in altimeter was a big selling point. I have the previous Vivoactive

 I can say the sync / upload on this Vivoactive is faster than the first gen. I have used it to track mountain biking and walking so far. My wife has used it to track running with no issues.  Heart Rate: Here I feel is another elephant, sitting in the room eating peanuts

 Sometimes there was a delay between showing the floor counted, but it would show up. As for activity tracking, it has been outstanding. It is easy to start, stop and view data while tracking the activity. It also uploads to the Garmin Connect really fast

 However this screen is designed for battery life and to be read out doors. When in direct light it is super bright and easy to read. However in low light without the backlight on it is hard to read. Straight out of the box the backlight is set to level 3, which is hard to see

I had the Vivoactive HR, went to Vivoactive 3, and plan on getting a Vivoactive 4 soon, after trying the WHOOP. I have a smart index scale I sync with Garmin Connect, and have all of my stats in one app.

I've also realized a lot of my fitbit's features are behind a pay wall. 
Has anyone else went for it and is it worth it?

Upgrading from Fitbit to Garmin

 I will update in the next few days as to how close the two actually are.  Heart rate! This device does "real-time" monitoring and seems to be accurate to a few BPM from my testing using the old fashioned way; finger on the wrist and using a watch. ;) Fit2 was ok with HR but often gave erroneous readings.  Smart phone connectivity! The Fit2 was a great "smartwatch" but that was about it

 I saw in the setting that you can calibrate this and I will to see if it will be even more accurate. I will be comparing this to my Fitbit One, which is a champ when it comes to counting steps. I will update in the next few days as to how close the two actually are.  Heart rate!   Right out of the box I have to say, this is a "man's" watch". I can't imagine a female wearing it as is it rather big, but whom am I to decide.  I will be comparing this to the Samsung Fit2, which I also own. The Fit2 was a major disappointment from day one as it is lacking in every aspect of a "fitness tracker" and also has firmware issues that include battery life and false tracking data

 The Fit2 was horrendously flawed when it came to counting steps as it would be off by several thousand during the course of a day. As soon as I put this device on, I noticed that it counts steps pretty accurately. I saw in the setting that you can calibrate this and I will to see if it will be even more accurate. I will be comparing this to my Fitbit One, which is a champ when it comes to counting steps

While early, I love this device!

I am very happy with this watch, but remember I wish I bought AW in the beginning. My main concern now is the difference in battery life. I am very pleased with Garmin, and have heard about battery issues with AW. I think that is the only thing holding me back is this, and the price maybe:):)

On prime day I saw a great deal on a Garmin vivoactive 4 (to my understanding it's their sort of Jack of all trades but master at nine, day to day type watch). I'm absolutely in love with it. The UI is so much better than fitbits, there's so many more features, much more customizability, more accurate tracking on just about everything (except sleep maybe). I wish Garmin was paying me but I was just tired of being disappointed by my Fitbit

Fitbit products are a bit overpriced to begin with. There is no way I am paying a recurring fee to have more insights. I hope this is not a trend that other companies follow.

Haven't been using the Charge 4 for long but I feel you OP. I tried the premium subscription and all it did was make me annoyed that if wasn't a part of the "experience" to begin with. 

I guess I'm kind of at a crossroads because after using the Fitbit for about 6 months now I'm wanting more. I want more style, less fitness tracking. I want a faster and smoother operating system. I want better watch faces. 

Ultimately I'm ready to start shopping around.

Honestly? This post got me shopping around for Garmin watches and I am IMPRESSED!!! 
I was planning to upgrade to the Charge 5 but I wasn't super excited about it as it didn't have a lot of the features I wanted (especially the altimeter!!). It seems Garmin have these features plus LOADS of extras that Fitbit would force you to get Premium for.

My Sense battery broke after just a year and I got tired of waiting for the postal service to deliver for my replacement, so I bought the Galaxy Watch 4 on a whim. 

Overall, I would rate Samsung Health and Fitbit on the same levels. The sensors might not be as accurate and battery life isn't NEARLY as good, but you get all the same data from Samsung without paying an additional $10 a month, the UI is miles better, and you get actual apps on the watch. I am happy with my decision.

I broadly agree, however garmin doesn't appear to have a device equivalent with the same sensors as fitbit charge 5. I don't own any fitbit, but that's what I'm getting (after reviews).

I know we all have different use cases on why we use Fitbit products.

I've had just about every Charge device and I like them. The Charge 5 is by far the best looking one.

What I don't like is that we have to pay additional money to receive insights after already paying for the device and they come with a pretty subpar 1 year warranty.

The Charge 4 probably had the worst connection points for the bands too, constantly not flush and makes it look terrible. 

I'd like to use the other Fitbit products, but since I play ice hockey, my gloves constantly would tap on the screen and either pause or end the workout, which makes using the watch less functional, which is why I continue to use the Charge series. I don't ever have the same issue.   


I'm also a fan of Google, so very interested to see what they can do with Fitbit going forward because their device software sucks. It's also slow and generally ugly IMO.

I've been intrigued by Garmin, they have a solid lineup of products and to my understanding, they don't charge anything extra for more health data like Fitbit.   


I wanted to get a take from ya'll here on what you think about Fitbit going forward and perhaps your thoughts on jumping ship to a new product.
