* Band not replaceable/changeable, also the little strap-retainer loop stopped staying in place even though it has a little nub on it that's supposed to keep it there
* Charging connector not reliable and difficult to clean the contacts on the device
* No on-board GPS
* Screen was also small, like to the point where they had the thousands digits for steps on its own line above the hundreds/tens/ones. 
* It just stopped counting stairs for a while, then started over-counting by an absurd amount. No amount of cleaning out the little hole for the sensor helped. I don't care much about stairs, but it got annoying that I couldn't shut off the notifications for stairs goals. Maybe I could have set the goal to be something stupid like 100.
* Garmin Connect app and device sometimes took forever to sync up. 

Before the Garmins, I had a Microsoft Band 2. The Charge 5 is basically the device I had been hoping to replace the Band 2 with since it died (and MS killed the app/service).

Wasn't all disappointment with the Garmin devices, though. I did like how light they felt, and both were pretty low-profile little trackers. Step tracking on the Garmin seemed a little more accurate, but could be that the Charge 5 is still figuring me out? Dunno. Sleep tracking seems about the same. The vivosmart 4 did a decent job connecting to my iPhone's GPS for walks/runs, and at least the Garmin app would tell me speed and not just 'pace'. The app also worked very well with MyFitnessPal, noticeably better than the Fitbit app.

I also liked that the Garmin app is dark themed. Why Fitbit doesn't have a dark mode for the app when users have been asking for it since at least 2017 (best I can tell), I have no idea.

I owned an Ionic for about 4 years (yes I consider myself really lucky to have a Fitbit that could last this long) before switching to the Venu 2 about a week ago.

tldr - I am not regretting my decision one single bit.

I can summarize my experience so far with a pros & cons list:

Pros:

1. Screen lock !  A very practical yet simple feature to prevent accidental activity tracking interruptions because of sweat / etc touching the screen.  Beats me why Fitibit has never thought of this after all these years
2. With the 3rd party dwMap, my Garmin gives me an important feature that none of the Fitbits offer:  hiking / kayaking route navigation and checking to make sure you don't go off-route
3. Better battery life
4. Bigger screen and easier to read
5. Watch tells you with vibrations if bluetooth connection is lost.  Likewise for reconnection.
6. Garmin Coach !  Started a run training already.  Looks interesting.  No extra cost.
7. A hydration tracking function that actually works
8. Activity data - much more detailed, and can be displayed on watch too unlike the Ionic.  E.g. - the "climb stairs" activity actually tells me how many floors I have climbed in real time.
9. Better app store - better UI, user rating system much better
10. Step count, HR, and GPS all seem way more accurate
11. Feature Rich - some features just don't exist on fitbit, the rest that do are mostly hidden behind paywall.  With Garmin they all come at no extra cost.
12. Stable connection with phone - not once has the bluetooth connection been lost when the watch is within range of the phone (so far). Once there is a bluetooth connection, every feature that depends on it - notificaitons, sync, water, calendar, etc simply just work.  Fitbit on the other hand has given me sporadic issues before when it comes to bluetooth connectivity.
13. (locale specific) Chinese 'Hong Kong' characters can all be displayed properly unlike the Fitbit Ionic
14. (locale specific) Traditional Chinese interface on my Venu 2
15. (locale specific) Delightfully surprised that the Taiwan-based KKBox music service is fully supported.  Music population on my watch is a breeze.  It's all done automagically.  So happy about this.

Cons:

1. Notifications do not include date/time stamp
2. Notifications are just handled a little differently - each time the watch (re)establishes bluetooth connection with my phone, the entire notifications list is flushed then re-populated.  Hence each time it just downloads the entire list of notifications from the phone, with no regard on which of these notifications have already been fetched before.  So you sort of lose your sense on which of these notifications are new ones.
3. Learning curve - I was totally stumped at first trying to tell the difference between controls vs. glances vs. apps/activities vs. data fields.  The level of complexity compared with the Fitbit is enormous.

Edit:  have been adjusting my watch band a bit tighter for the past 2 nights, and both sleep and wake up times have been spot on.  Not too sure about REM still...

who here has made the switch from fitbit to garmin? thoughts?

 Unfortunately, there is no always on display like there is on competitors such as the Fitbit Charge 5. With this watch, you'll either need to tap the screen to turn it on, press the button on the screen itself, or you can use a raise to wake gesture to activate the watch face so you can see the time and your workout stats. Navigation is really simple. Sleep tracking is good although it does present you with a sleep score which sometimes doesn't always correlate with how I felt after I got up from my sleep in the morning which is not unique to the VivoSmart 5

 There's really not that much to talk about when it comes to the design of the Viva Smart 5. It really just does look like your standard run-of-the-mill fitness tracker. Instead of interchangeable straps, the actual body of the tracker itself just pops straight out from the band like so, and you can buy different ones of these to change up the look of the band. I quite like it

 It does have an automatic brightness sensor, and for the most part, I could make out all of my stats and workout metrics really, really easily. The one thing I would say though is that notifications might sometimes be a little bit more tricky to see on this. If you struggle reading smaller screens, then you might have a little bit of difficulty reading notifications that come through from either your iOS or Android device on the screen of the Vivo Smart 5 just because it is so small. Unfortunately, there is no way to change the text or font size on the clock face itself

 It's rated to get to seven days of battery life between charges however that is of course going to depend on your usage patterns. For me, I do have a probably a little bit more of heavy use than say that standard that Garmin was measuring that against. I've so far gotten about five full days out of the Vivo Smart 5 before needing to charge. That's taking into account things like doing a 30 to 60 minute GPS workout every day as well as having automatic screen brightness on and I did SPO2 or blood oxygen tracking one night during sleep tracking but every other night I've had it turned off to do my sleep tracking just without SPO2

The Garmin Vivosmart 5 has great fitness tracking, but is missing some features.

The Garmin Vivosmart 5 tracks heart rate, steps, sleep and activity, but also gives you more insight into your energy levels. But for $150, it feels a bit pricey considering this fitness tracker doesn't have a color screen or built-in GPS.

Yeah, i like my fitbit charge 5. I do not use GPS. I upgrade from charge 4 and is better. The screen is color and is brighter, i can see it in full sun. I love it!

I love mine. Initial sync was a little slow, but once the update was done, things have been fine. It does seem to complain a lot about being unable to connect when I'm in the watch-face selection screen in the app, though. Weird.

<p>Battery has seemed decent so far, but I&#39;ve been in the habit of putting my trackers on their charger when I shower since my MS Band 2. 😄 I wish I had looked at it after soccer, though. I don&#39;t remember how low it was after a little over 2 hours of tracking with the GPS on.</p>

I own a charge 4 and love it! I ordered the charge 5 and was going to pass my charge 4 on to a family member now I'm a bit worried I'm not going to like the 5. Has anyone had a good experience with the 5?

All the hate about charge 5 is making me nervous for my order

 It then decided that I only walked 0.47 miles over the next 45 minutes, though it did count steps reasonably accurately. (Stride length was properly set, so that wasn't the problem.) During the activity, I was unable to navigate to the music widget to start/pause my cell phone audio

 Screen is not as bright as the Vivosmart 4, and I was unable to display HR during activity. I know many people dislike the Vivosmart 4's haptic button, but I happen to like it. The Vivosmart 5's physical button required a little more pressure than I found comfortable. The Vivosmart 5 will record the built-in relax and breathe exercise as an activity, but the breathing instructions fit awkwardly on the screen

Wanted to like it, but for now I prefer the Vivosmart 4 to the 5. Auto dectect activity (a brisk walk) failed, so I manually started the walk 15 minutes in. It then decided that I only walked 0.47 miles over the next 45 minutes, though it did count steps reasonably accurately

 I actually prefer the simpler breathing exercise animation on the Vivosmart 4. Maybe some of these things will be fixed with firmware updates, but for now I'm going to stick with the Vivosmart 4 for activity tracking and a Fitbit for sleep tracking.

I have an Instict for workouts, and have a Vivosmart on my right wrist I use and sleep with daily, both sync with no issues.

I have made up my mind on getting a new Fenix 6X pro. But I don’t want to be wearing it while sleeping because it’s too big. But I also want to capture my sleep and recovery data. So could I use a second garmin device (something smaller like vivofit) that I could use only while sleeping… and will they both sync to the same account?

How can I use 2 garmin devices to feed fitness data into same account?

My old Vivosmart HR finally gave up so I decided to upgrade to the newest version. I perform all of my synching and charging through a PC, so I was disappointed to find that getting an initial connection to Garmin Express was difficult. Several rounds of resetting the watch were required to get the initial synch. Also, in order to perform the initial setup of the display the Garmin Connect smartphone app is required

It's a small little thing that you can do that'll help this video and the channel quite a bit and I appreciate it. So for the hardware, the VivoSmart 5 is just a nice, lightweight, comfortable band that you can wear opposed to something much larger like a watch. And the nice thing about it is that it still provides quite a bit in terms of health, activity, and fitness tracking

 On the tail end of the workout is where we saw a little bit more variance from both watches I was wearing. But no huge spikes or dips or anything like that. So not a big deal overall. And then for weight training, the Vivo Smart 5 did pretty well here overall

 But what we could see here are a couple of points during the run where it veered off a little bit more. So at the beginning, again, a little bit of funkiness from both the Vivo Smart 5, as well as another watch that I was wearing on the other wrist. But after that, they both got back in line. Right around the middle portion of the run, there were these two points where it tracked high for a few moments

 And then from here to access some of the data that it can collect, all I'll do is just swipe up and here's where I can access these little widgets with different types of information. Like this first widget shows my steps and calories for the day along with intensity minutes for the week. And you can think of intensity minutes as the time that you're spending at higher heart rates like working out. And then what you can do from here too is that if you want to see more details, I can just tap on these steps data field and then see my steps along with my step goal for the day

Best activity-tracking wearable that I can wear with a real watch on the other wrist?

I bought a Charge 5 from Fitbit, but to get detailed information, you have to pay a $10/month fee. You get 6 months free to start. I’m not looking to add another monthly fee, so I found the Vivosmart 5. So far it has been great

 I personally think it’s better at $99, $149 is too high but it’s a better value than Charge 5 when you factor in the monthly fee for Fitbit Premium.
